Finally, Judy stood up. She is a thin, quiet, dark-haired girl who always wears big, white fisherman sweaters. Judy crossed her arms over her chest, closed her eyes, leaned back, and did not flinch (退缩). She looked like one of those Lipton tea advertisements where the model jumps into the pool.
For a moment, I was sure she was going to hit the floor. At the last moment, her partner caught her head and shoulders and pulled her up immediately.
"Wow!" several students yelled. Some clapped their hands. Our teacher finally smiled. "You see," he said to the girl, "you closed your eyes. That was the difference. 5 . People in Western countries are eating less meat these days. It is not only for their health but also for protecting animals. But now they have another reason.
Eating less meat can help to prevent the change of the weather condition, according to a study published in Nature.
Raising livestock like sheep and cows is harmful to the environment. Take cows for example, when they digest (消化) food, their stomachs make greenhouse (温室) gases, which are a major cause of global warming. 17% of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from livestock farming, The New York Times reported.
In addition, to raise these livestock, people have to cut down forests and turn them into farms. Forests play a key role in fighting global warming because they absorb greenhouse gases.
Eating less meat according to some advice could cut global food-related emissions by nearly a third by 2050, the study found. Keeping a vegetarian diet (素食) in the long term could bring down emissions by 63%.
But eating less meat won’t be easy. According to the study, people in Western countries will need to eat 90% less meat than they do now in order to have an influence on the weather condition. Scientists are now trying to find new foods to take the place of meat.
Some say that insects (昆虫) could help. A 2013 UN report said that eating insects is healthier and better for the environment. They produce 75% less greenhouse gases than livestock.
Some scientists are creating lab-grown meat. They make meat in a lab, using livestock cells (细胞). In the future, people might be able to buy this lab-grown meat.

6 . Volunteers are probably some of the most overlooked(被忽视的) people. But no activities can carry on smoothly without hardworking volunteers. Last month, I volunteered at the Color Run in Melbourne, Australia. Although I didn’t have so much fun as the runners, I still learned a valuable lesson.
My job was to give a high-five(击掌) to every runner at the finish line. At the beginning, I saw it as a simple task. When the first runner passed, I reached out my hands and shouted “Good job!” excitedly. However, as more and more people crossed the finish line and clapped their hands with mine, my arms got sore. To make things worse, it became hotter. My clothes were wet because of the sweat(汗水), and I felt really tired. But soon I saw a group of children running towards me. They were about 6 years old. Although they hardly catch their breath, they still kept going with big smiles on their faces. They put up their hands and said loudly, “High-five!”
At that moment, I was quite touched. They were so young, and they refused to give up. Suddenly, I felt myself be full of strength(力量). I clapped their hands, “Well done, little guys!”
That is the meaning of being a volunteer. It is never an easy job. However, we meet different people and see the spirit that touches us. Although such spirit is not often found in daily life, it can help us learn a lot when we see it by accident.

Doctors and scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way they do are called psychologists (心理学家). They are starting to believe that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system ( 神 经 系 统 ). The well-known “new great inventions” of modern China have made our daily lives more convenient.
High-speed trains
China created its first high-speed railway line in 2008. Since then, the number of passenger trips has grown by over 30 percent every year. By 2016, more than 5 billion trips had been taken on the trains. By 2020, one-fifth of the country’s 150000-km railway network will be used by the trains. This network will link more than 80 percent of major cities across China.
Mobile payment
Mobile payment is turning China into a “cashless society”. Instead of paying by cash(现金) customers now pay for their goods and some kinds of bills simply by typing a short password into the Alipay(支付宝) or Wechat Pay app on their mobile phone.
Shared bikes
China has surprised the world with how quickly shared bikes are widely used. Nowadays, bike users can simply pick up or park the bike on the street through GPS and smart phone apps. China's two leading bike-sharing companies, Mobike and Ofo, have been opening their overseas markets in Singapore, the UK and the United States.
Online shopping
With around 751 million Internet users, China has been the world's largest and fastest growing online shopping market.
