1 . Walking
If you want to get healthy or stay healthy, there is one easy activity for you-walking.
You may think that simply taking a walk is not enough to make a big difference. You may think that you need to do something like running to stay healthy.
Well, a new study says that is not true. It finds out that walking may be as good for us as running.
Running is a high-impact(高强度的)activity and can be hard on the body. So, many people cannot run. Walking seems to have all of the advantages and none of the disadvantages of running.
Dr Russell Pate is a professor of exercise science at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He says, “Walking is one of the easiest and safest exercises a person can do. You do not need to learn a lot to get results.”
Walking needs no special skills or equipment. You can do it anywhere. It fits easily into your daily schedule (日程表). You can walk at work. You can walk if you want to go shopping. You can take the stairs instead of the lift.
Walking is a great exercise for beginners. If you are out of shape or getting back into shape after an illness or accident, walking is perfect. You can do a little at a time, or as we like to say, take baby steps.

2 . What are you holding in your hand while you are taking the examination? Right. A pen.
Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries, recorded events, carried news, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools.
Without it, progress(社会的进步) would have been almost impossible. The invention of the wheel, the introduction of the steam engine (蒸汽机),the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen has done more. It has taken away mountains, and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of society.
In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers(律师) took up their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus (纸莎草纸) was first used. The most famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote down their thoughts.
The pen is very utilitarian. We cannot sign a bill or write 2 letters or buy a house without our pen. An agreement is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take their examinations with it as well.
Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on the name list with a pen. We cannot be married until we have signed. A pen records the important events in our lives.
Let's remember that we hold in our hands the most powerful instrument which man owns. The pen is a magic tool. Whenever you use it, enjoy it.

3 . The fire at Notre Dame Cathedral(巴黎圣母院)in Paris has raised questions about the condition of thousands of other historic buildings across Europe.
Some people say the fire last month was a wake-up call, not just for Europe, but the whole world. Large fires have long robbed humanity of knowledge, art and treasures. One example is the fire at the famous library of Alexandria in northern Egypt about 1700 years ago.
In 2015, the German engineering company Siemens found that Scotland had about 10 serious fires a year, while England lost at least twelve listed buildings a year. In Germany, 70 historic buildings have been destroyed since 2000.
And all too often, fires happen while old buildings are being repaired. Experts say that what is needed is continuous attention and maintenance(维护). These steps, if taken, could help avoid the need for major repairing work.
But regular attention and maintenance costs money.
Part of the problem comes from the shortage of money provided by governments after the 2008 financial crisis (金融危机). As a result, governments are increasingly looking for rich companies to keep up these historic buildings.
“We do need more money, but this is a shared duty for governments, businesses and citizens across Europe,” said an officer from the European Union.
Some say world-famous monuments like Notre Dame are the driving force behind tourism and should get more respect. People have noticed the importance of such respect.
“Historic buildings are a gold mine(矿). You cannot explore it and then just leave the mine and go to another one. It is something you really have to value,” the officer said.

4 . Is there hope for nature?
David Attenborough is a well-known English broadcaster and natural historian. He has made over 40 documentaries over the last 67 years. At the age of 93, he made his most recent documentary—A Life on Our Planet (《地球的一段生命旅》). It depicts (描绘) everything he has seen and experienced in his life.
Looking back, Attenborough says what strikes(震撼)him most is that wild animals are becoming harder to find. The documentary shows how the global ecosystem is being destroyed (摧毁)by humans, whether it's the hunting of gorillas and whales or the mass destruction(大规模摧毁)of rain forests. All of these can lead to another mass extinction(大灭绝). As Attenborough says, In the natural world, no one can stand alone.“The ecosystem relies on balance, and once the scale is tipped, the ecosystem starts to crumble(破碎).”
At the end of his film, Attenborough sinks into silence(沉默)in front of the camera. It is a very tense(紧张的)moment because he is thinking about what he has just told us. As I watched it, I felt like I was carrying the weight of the story on my shoulders.
But the documentary doesn't end there. Attenborough still gives people hope.
He says there are ways for us to restore the natural balance. From small habit changes to large-scale government regulations(规定), there are lots of things we can do to help our planet become wild again.
This is a documentary for everyone on Earth because we are all part of this. We need to take action now!

5 . Good Handwriting: a Lost Art
I can't remember how to write a capital in cursive(草体). The rest of my letters are kind of stiff (僵直的), too.
I am a member of Generation Y(年轻一代). And now there is a group coming after me—children who text-message nearly as much as they talk. They feel even less need to improve their handwriting.
We are witnessing the death of handwriting. Many people are worried about this. They say it's caused by the fact that computers are used more widely. But experts(专家)say that's not the case. Technological developments are only part of the reason. Kids haven't learned to write neatly because no one has forced them to.
In the United States, schoolchildren learn print(印刷体)in kindergarten and cursive in the third grade. But most of them don't master(掌握)either one. My cursive teacher Linda Garcia has now been teaching for 42 years. She says children are just as excited to learn cursive as ever.
However, once they leave her classroom, it's a different story. She doesn’t know any teachers in the upper grades who stress the importance of handwriting. She frequently sees her former(以前的)students going back to sloppy letters.
Garcia points out that schools today are all teaching to the tests. If something isn't on a test, it’s viewed as unnecessary. Over the decades, daily handwriting lessons have been reduced from an average of 30 minutes to 15. Reading is tested. But handwriting isn't, so it's important, "Garcia adds, "In other words, schools don't care how a child holds his pen or pencil as long as he or she can read.
Handwriting is becoming a lost art, but is that really a bad thing? I am never worried about my handwriting. After all, we are living in the age of social networks. Most people write very little by hand. Perhaps this is the trade-off(取舍). We have to give up artistry for efficiency(效率).

6 . My husband and children think they are very lucky that they are living and that it’s Christmas again. They can’t see that we live on a dirty street in a dirty house among people who aren’t much good. But Johnny and children can’t see this. What a pity it is that our neighbours have to make happiness out of all this dirt. I decided that my children must get out of this. The money that we’ve saved isn’t nearly enough.
The McGaritys have money but they are so proud. They look down upon the poor. The McGarity girl just yesterday stood out there in the street eating from a bag of candy( 糖果 )while a ring of hungry children watched her. I saw those children looking at her and crying in their hearts; and when she couldn’t eat any more she threw the rest down the sewer(下水道). Why, is it only because they have money? There is more to happiness than money in the world, isn’t there?
Miss Jackson who teaches at the Settlement House isn’t rich, but she knows things. She understands people. Her eyes look straight into yours when she talks with you. She can read your mind. I’d like to see the children be like Miss Jackson when they grow up.

8 . When Emma Yang was 7 or 8 years old, her grandmother got Alzheimer's disease(阿尔茨海默病). It made her grandmother lose her memory. She couldn't even know her own family members.Yang, now 14, decided to create an app to help people with this disease.
Her app is called Timeless. It uses facial recognition technology. Alzheimer's patients can use the app to look at photos of their friends and family. The app will tell them who the person is and how they recognize(认出)someone in the same room; they can take pictures and the app will try to identify them.
Yang got the idea after seeing how facial recognition is used in different areas, especially in health care. She worked with a tech company to create the facial recognition software that her app used. She learned to code(编码)for the iPhone for the first time in the process.
The app is still in development. Yang is trying to raise money through crowdfunding(众筹)so that she can take the next step. Though some may think that the app is too hard for older people to use, Yang is hopeful. “If you introduce it to them right away, it's actually possible for them to use it and it can really benefit their lives,” she said.
Memory expert Katherine Possin agreed. Possin said looking at photos on the app can help patients feel more social. It can also improve their memory, she added.

9 . A grand international horticultural(园艺)exhibition kicked off on April 29, 2019 Monday in Beijing. Chinese President Xi expressed his hope that the green development concept(理念)embodied(体现)by the Expo park would be spread to “every corner of the world”.
The International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing is the highest-level and largest international fair held in China after the International Horticultural Exhibition held in the southwest city of Kunming in 1999, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the first China International Import Expo in 2018.
“The development model of ‘killing the hens for eggs' and ‘draining(排空)the lake for fish' is at a dead end, "Xi said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the Expo. "The future will be illuminated(发光的)by eco-friendly development that is in accordance with the rules of nature.”
“China's ecological civilization(生态文明)development is on fast track. People will live in a better environment with blue sky, green mountains and clear water, "Xi said." We should protect the ecological environment like protecting our eyes and value it in the same way we value our lives.”
“Only with concerted efforts can we effectively(有效)deal with global environment issues such as climate change, marine(海洋)pollution and biological protection and achieve the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable(可持续的)Development goals," he said.
He put forward a five-point suggestion: pursuing(追求)harmony between human and nature, prosperity(繁荣)based on green development, a passion for mature-caring lifestyles, a scientific spirit in ecological governance and joint efforts to deal with environmental challenges.
"The Beijing Horticultural Expo, themed ‘Live Green, Live Better', is one of the major international events hosted by China in 2019, which marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It indicates(标识)that China has changed from a participant(参与者)in global green development to a contributor and leader, "said Wu Shunze, an expert with the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. 10 . One day, when I was a boy, my classmates and I were going to pick berries. Before I was going out of the gate, my father called me back and said, “Harry, I want to tell you one thing. When you find a good bush (灌木), don’t leave it to try to find a better one. The other kids will run about, picking one or two berries here, and one or two there, and getting very few in the end. If you want to get more berries, stick to your bush!”
I went with my classmates and we had a good time. But it was just as my father had said. Once one of my classmates found a good bush, he called to the others, and they would leave their places and run off to see what he had found.
But I remembered my father’s words, and I stuck to my bush. When I had done with one I went to another. When night came, I had a large basketful of nice berries, more than all the others put together. Compared with my classmates, I felt more relaxed. I went home happily that night.
Now I have worked for 6 years, but I never forget the lesson my father taught me. I always stick to my bush. When I had a good place and was getting on well, I wouldn’t leave it and spend days or weeks trying to find a better place. When my friends said, “Come with us, and we will find you something better to do.” I shook my head, and stuck to my bush. Now I’m running a big company. I owe (归功于) all I have to the lesson my father taught me when he said, “Stick to your bush.”
