1 . Some teenagers think that newspapers are boring and only for adults. But that’s not true. There are many interesting stories in the paper. You just need to make clear what you are looking at. “I spend about half an hour reading newspapers every day,” said 15-year-old Gao Ming from Beijing. “I’m interested in things happening at school.” School news is just one kind of news story in newspapers. There’s also world news from international problems to pop stars. Read the newspaper carefully, we’ll find different types of articles on the pages.
News stories — these stories are about events. Reporters try to show all points of a story to help readers understand what happened. Reporters try to speak to as many people as possible. They also use pictures and numbers to show the readers that the stories are true. The newspaper has lots of news stories on the news page and front page. When we read them, we learn more about the facts, not the writers’ ideas.
Opinion writing — opinion writing is usually about something happening right now. But it isn’t just facts. Here writers add their own opinions to the news. Writers pick only the facts that help back up their ideas. They make readers believe that they are telling the truth. This is usually the kind of story that gets people thinking. Go to “Speak Out” on Page Two for an example of opinion writing in Teenagers.

It was good at dancing and it has a heart, a stomach and other things in its body. It also had teeth and hair. It could express its feelings by using its eyes. Its eyes could move and could show love to women, but it couldn't laugh. It was probably the earliest robot in the world.
Not all robots always look like humans. They have various shapes. They are clever and they can do all kinds of jobs, especially difficult and dangerous jobs. They are widely used in factories, banks, hospitals and other places. In the future, robots will make fewer mistakes, even can correct themselves and they will be smarter. The American Computer &. Robotics Museum was open to visitors in 1990 in Bozeman, Montana. At first it was planned to build in Princeton, New Jersey. The founders moved to Bozeman in 1988 and after looking at the area they decided to build the museum there. With Yellowstone National Park to the south and Glacier National Park to the northwest, the museum attracts thousands of visitors from all 50 states and over 50 countries. The American Computer &. Robotics Museum has been written about in many publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, Los Angeles Times, QST and USA Today.
When visitors first enter the museum, they are shown a video introducing the museum and its collections. All visitors are given the chance to join in tours led by friendly tour guides. We have had visitors aged from 3 to 93—— it is a big family. Over 1,000 exhibitions are shown in the 6,000-square metres museum. Travelling through our museum, you will see the exciting 20,000 years of history of the information age. 4 . There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don't become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let's have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful.
The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol (酒精) in their breath. The car wouldn't start. It sounds like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency (紧急情况) even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He connected the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was produced by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal (踩踏) very hard.
One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate (充气) a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead?
One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio, so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. The Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button (按钮) and the robot would do 'high-fives' with you! That's fantastic! I wonder if you have any wonderful ideas for inventions like these.

5 . It's reported that a Chinese company has created a new facial recognition system that can identify (识别) people even if they are wearing masks. Developers began working on the new system in January 2020 when the novel coronavirus appeared in China. The fast spread of the virus has led most people to wear masks in public to protect themselves and people around.
China is regarded as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). According to engineers at the Beijing-based Hanwang Technology Ltd, this system is the first to be created to identify people wearing face masks. A team of 20 engineers completed it in about a month, adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a smaller collection of masked faces," the company said.
Hanwang is now selling two main kinds of products using the new technology. One performs single channel recognition (单通道识别), which will be used at the entrances to buildings. The other product is a multi-channel (多通道识别) recognition system that uses groups of cameras. It's said that the multi-channel system can identify a person in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.
When people wear a mask, the recognition rate can reach about 95 percent," said Huang Lei, Hanwang's vice president. The system's success rate for people without wearing a mask is about 99. 5 percent."
Nowadays the new system is trying to identify people with both sunglasses and a mask. In such cases, all of the key facial information is lost, making recognition hard," Huang said.

6 . The teacher stood before his class of 30 students and was going to hand out the final exam papers. “I know how hard you have all worked to get ready for this test.” he said. “And because I know you are all able to understand these questions. I am ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test.’’
A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. The teacher looked at the rest students and said. “Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance. ”Two more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. The teacher then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class. Keep believing in yourself.
I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think that it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.
The same is true for students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life’s lessons whether from school education or from events in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now and you realize that you have some limits(局限). However, there is nothing you can’t do or learn to be. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰)said, “We do not conquer the mountain, but ourselves.”

7 . There are some easy things you can do to protect the earth:
•Plant flowers, grass or trees.

England is very different from Hong Kong. The weather is terrible and it rains a lot. The buildings are funny. They are in rows and not high. I love them because the rooms are much larger. I’m having a wonderful at my new school and my new home!
Mum and Dad are happy with their new jobs. But my brother Jack doesn’t like moving to England because he misses his friends so much.
I’ve made lots of new friends at school. My teachers are really nice too and my English has improved a lot. After school, we can take part in relaxing activities such as sport, watching films or playing computer games. There’s a park near the school where I often go with the other students at the weekend.
We are travelling back to Hong Kong for the summer holiday. I will visit you and bring you a present!
