1 .

There was a Greek shopkeeper in a small corner shop in London.   She taught me about the great power of an act of kindness.

I was a student, single and very poor.   I would work early mornings and late nights to pay for my studies, and I was really tired all the time.

On the day I went to that shop for the first time, I was sick with a very high fever.   I had been off work for a few days, and I had run out of food.   I also had no friends nearby who could help.   So I ventured(冒险)out to get some food.

I went into the Greek shop because it was close.   I picked up a few items, and then handed them to the shopkeeper.   She said, “You’re unwell.” I nodded.

She pointed at the bread I was buying and said, “I can make you a sandwich, so you don't have to do it yourself.” So she made the sandwich and asked me to wait a moment.   She went in the back room and reappeared with a bowl of hot soup. “It will warm you up,” she said with a smile.

Her smile warmed me up.   It made me want to be as kind as the shopkeeper.   I was a quite shy boy, but from that day on, I didn’t let the shyness prevent me from helping others.

3 . It’s more and more often for us to see wild animals enter cities. This gives people in cities more chances to learn about wildlife but also leads to conflicts (冲突) between people and wildlife.

In Berlin, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They eat flowers and plants in parks and gardens. Some people like them and give them food and water. Other people don’t like them. They want the government and the police to stop pigs entering the city.

Animals can be dangerous when they are big enough. In Cape Town in South Africa, baboons (狒狒) come into the city when they are hungry. They go into gardens and eat fruit from trees. They even go into houses and take food from cupboards and fridges! They are big and strong animals, so they can scare people. But the city can be dangerous for baboons too. Sometimes, cars and buses kill baboons in accidents. People’s food is very bad for the baboons’ teeth because it has a lot of sugar.

5 . For thousands of years, humans have explored (探索) the Earth. Nowadays, we are exploring space. Astronomers (天文学家) are the modern day explorers. Now, many astronomers are looking for new planets and new places for humans to live in the future. But where do astronomers start looking?

First of all, astronomers look for a star. That's because our own Earth moves around a star (the Sun).More importantly, it is the correct distance (距离) from the Sun for heat and light. So when astronomers have found the star, they look at the planets around it. In recent years, astronomers have found nearly 400 new planets with stars. However, many of these planets are either too near the star or too far away.

However, if the planet is in a good position, astronomers look for three key things: water, air and rock. Water is important because all life needs water. Humans can drink it and also grow plants with water. And plants produce air for humans to breathe and food to eat. Rock on a planet is also important. That’s because there is often water under the rock.

After many years of scrutinizing, astronomers have found a planet that is similar to the Earth. It’s Gliese 581g and it’s near a star. The astronomers think it has water and rock and the average (平均) temperature is between-31°C and-12°C. That’s cold, but not colder than Antarctica or the Arctic Circle, for example. Gliese 581g is bigger than the Earth. A year on Gliese 581g is only 37 Earth days instead of 365.But astronomers do not think these are big differences and some of them think Gliese 581g will be a new Earth. However, Gliese 581g is twenty light years from the Earth.

1. What do astronomers have to find first before starting to look for a new place for humans to live?
A.A new star.B.A new planet.C.Some heat.D.Some light.
2. What does the rock on a planet tell us?
A.The star is in a right position.
B.We may discover water under it.
C.The planet is too near to the Sun.
D.There can be air around the rock.
3. What does the underlined word “scrutinizing” mean in the last paragraph?
A.discussingB.waitingC.lookingD.traveling
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Gliese 581g is already a new Earth.
B.There are planets similar to our Earth.
C.Water, air and rock are important.
D.Astronomers are looking for a new Earth.
5. Where does the passage probably come from?
A.A storybook.B.A travel guide.C.A film poster.D.A science magazine.

6 . Think of a simple object—a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size? Are you remembering what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard? Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense. They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice something with your senses. Then, messages are sent to different brain cells, which join together to form connections. A new connection goes into your short-term memory. It is stored there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or stored in your long-term memory.

Having a good memory means making lots of connections and storing them in your long-term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughter also makes your brain more active. Also, don’t forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.

When you want to remember new information, you must pay special attention. Use your senses-sight, smell, hearing and touch-and keep repeating the information. To do well in your exams this year, turn off the TV, silence your mobile, and review your work regularly. To remember something special, use your imagination to create visual (视觉的) connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your next exam. Imagine the ID card as the body of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but it’s fun and it works. Another way is to do something different to your room. Turn a picture upside-down, or tie a sock around the door handle to remind (提醒) yourself of something to remember!

1. At the beginning, the writer gives an example to________.
A.lead in the topic of the article
B.show the importance of chalk
C.let readers remember the word
D.make readers know his favorite
2. How many ways are mentioned to have a good memory in Paragraph 2?
A.2.B.3.C.4.D.5.
3. The main idea of the third paragraph is________.
A.how to do well in exams
B.how to remember new information
C.why review your work
D.what to eat to make memories stronger
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Memory has nothing to do with languages.
B.Laughter can help to improve our memory.
C.A picture of eating chips is the most useful.
D.Our brain is difficult to keep in good shape.

Cruises (海上航游) are becoming more and more popular among tourists. Around 20 million passengers now enjoy having holidays on cruise ships every year. More people consider travelling by cruise ships as the perfect way to have a good rest and relax themselves. But have you ever thought about the influence on the environment because of this trend (趋势)?

According to The Guardian, cruise ships cause lots of pollution both on the sea and on land. The biggest cruise ship can carry 6, 000 passengers. Moving such a large ship requires huge engines which burn as much as 300, 000 liters of fuel a day. It is reported that a cruise ship causes as much pollution as 1 million cars or 0.7 million buses going over the same distance. Sometimes, they even travel on the sea by burning dirty fuel that isn't allowed on land. People who care about the environment become very worried and think that with the development of cruise industry, more pollution will be produced on the sea. However, no government controlled the air pollution. Cruises also produce huge amounts of rubbish which usually cannot be recycled. Waste water from showers and toilets is usually poured into the sea. Waste food from restaurants isn't put into the sea. But it still causes problems when it is brought back to land.

Cruise ships also cause problems in the cities where they stop. Every day, some popular places can receive five or six ships which are full of thousands of tourists. Is it good for the business in local cities? Not really. Restaurant owners say that the visitors just walk around for a few hours and then return to their ships to eat. What’s more, the crowds make the streets too busy, which annoys local people very much.

Luckily, some cities have taken actions to solve these problems. They start to control the number of cruise ships that will stop at the port (港口). A few cities even don't allow cruise ships to enter.

1. How many people take trips by cruise ships every year?
A.More than 6, 000.B.Around 300, 000.C.Around 20, 000, 000.D.More than 1, 000, 000.

B.Cruise ships’ waste water and food are put into the sea.
C.Every cruise ship needs to burn 300,000 liters of fuel a day.
D.Cruise ships are not controlled by the government.
4. Why aren’t the cruise ship passengers popular in some port cities?
A.Because they don’t spend money on meals.B.Because they fill up the restaurants and make noise.
C.Because they always say the city is too crowded.D.Because they are sometimes rude to other tourists.
5. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce a new way of travelling.B.To encourage people to try cruise ships.
C.To advise the government to stop cruise ships.D.To explain some problems that cruise ships cause.

On 25 July, 1909, a Frenchman, Louis Blériot, became the first man to complete an air journey. He flew from Calais, in the north of France, to Dover, in the south of England. Blériot 's flight surprised the whole Europe. People thought that such a journey was impossible.

The flight wasn't easy. Mr. Blériot, an engineer, couldn't swim, so he couldn't come down in the water. He couldn't walk very well because there was something wrong with his leg. And he didn't have a compass.

10 . I’ll never forget the Easter in 1946. I was twelve, my little sister, Ocy, was ten and my older sister, Darlene, was fourteen. We lived at home with our mother, and the four of us knew what we should do without dad. My dad had died five years before leaving Mom with no money and three school-aged kids to raise.

By 1946, a month before Easter, the pastor(牧师) of our church announced that a special holiday offering would be taken to help a poor family. We talked about what we could do. We decided to buy fifty pounds of potatoes and lived on them for a month. This would allow us to save twenty dollars of our grocery money for the offering. Then we thought that if we turned our electric lights off as much as possible, we'd save money on that month's electric bill.

The night before Easter, we were so excited that we could hardly sleep. We didn’t care that we wouldn’t have new clothes for Easter; we had seventy dollars for the sacrificial offering. We could hardly wait to get to the church!

Finally, we sat in church proudly. When the offering began, mom put in a ten-dollar bill and each of us kids put in a twenty-dollar bill. We sang all the way home from church. Over lunch, mom had a surprise for us. She had bought a dozen eggs, and we had boiled Easter eggs with our fried potatoes!
