1 . Most cities and towns in China have night markets every day. They are usually on the same street. During the day, the streets are quiet. At night, they become crowded and lively. Usually sellers arrive at three or four in the afternoon. By 6:00, lots of people crowd the streets.

Night markets are fun places to shop in. You can buy clothes, shoes and many other things. If the price is too high, you can bargain with sellers. You can also buy nice food. When you are hungry, you can sit down for a meal. Smelly tofu is popular, but it really smells bad.

In the USA, you can only get a full-time job if you are 16 years old or older. But there are things that teenagers can do to make some spending money. Here are a few ideas.

Parents with young children sometimes want to go out for dinner or to the movies, but they don’t want to leave their children alone. So, they ask a teenager to stay in the house, be a babysitter (保姆) and look after their children while they’re out. If the children go to bed early, you can do your homework!

Some people have a dog, but they don’t have time to take it for a walk. Dogs need a lot of exercise! So some teenagers work as dog walkers. It’s a good idea—you make money and you’re outside in the fresh air. You get some exercise, too!

Teenagers can work at home on their computers. Some companies pay teenagers to take online surveys (调查). They want to know what teenagers are interested in. It’s a fun and easy way to make money. You can also design (设计) web pages for friends or others.

Sometimes, some families pay teenagers to mow the lawns (修剪草坪). It’s a great job because you get fresh air and exercise. Mow a lawn carefully and people will want you to do it again. Then you have customers, because grass always grows.

You can choose one of them to make some money. Then you can spend it or save it! But don’t forget it’s important to always tell your parents where you’re going. Be safe when you work.

1. Three ideas of part-time jobs for teenagers are suggested in this passage.
2. Walking dogs and mowing lawns can help teenagers get both fresh air and exercise.

3 . Starting senior high school can be difficult. You may feel nervous because you don’t know where to go for class. Meeting new friends might make you nervous, too. Don’t worry. You are not alone. You are going to school with a group of students of your age, and we have several suggestions to share.

Stay clean. No one likes a classmate with a bad smell. So you need to shower every day, brush your teeth and wash your hair. Try to make yourself look tidy, whatever you wear.

Forget your fear and just talk to someone. Take a deep breath and find your voice. Introduce yourself and start a conversation about something you have in common. Sit in the middle of the classroom with many new friends around you.

Differences are not a problem. Everyone has his own opinion of the world and everyone believes in different things. You’ll find it good to have friends with different ideas. In this way, you can share and learn a lot more from each other.

Join clubs. What clubs can you join? You can join the ones with after-school activities that interest you. Being in a club helps you be more social. If not, you will just go to class and then go home.

Ask others to join you. Are you sad being alone while others are playing happily? You will probably say “yes”. So remember to be kind to the people around you. If you see someone sitting alone, invite him or her to hang out or play games together.

4 . Recently a video on Bilibili got widespread attention. About 1, 000 students across China talked about what they didn’t want to be in the future. This was a bit unusual. Normally, people talk about the things they do want to do or be.

Well, it turns out that most of the students are unsatisfied with the present world. There are lots of big problems. Some have easy solutions and others don’t. Most adults have become tired and bored. In other words, they get tired and give up on having any dreams or hopes of being able to make the world a better place.

When I was a teenager, my parents told me I could do anything and be whatever it is that I wanted to be. I usually laughed and thought this was a bit silly. However, looking back, I was really thankful for their advice, support and help with my learning. I think this, plus (加) the excellent suggestions I got from several excellent teachers in high school and my experience as a summer camp counselor (辅导员), led me work in education. I’ve been looking for more ways to encourage my students to keep their dreams alive. I always encourage them to try to help make the world a better place. I have found that I have personally been able to achieve this in my job as a Director of College Counseling (咨询服务).

But how can you achieve what it is that you want to do? According to one of my favorite books, The Four Disciplines of Execution, there are four steps. Focus on your “wildly important purposes” (your “WIGs”), develop steps to achieve them, find out your progress, and finally check your progress. So what’s your WIG? Don’t be afraid; think positively (积极地) and dream big!

文章大意:本文主要介绍了电视的发展历程以及人们观看电视的变化。

5 . What programs do you like to watch? How do you watch them? TV has always entertained (娱乐) and given us information, but how we watch has changed a lot.

The first electronic black and white television was invented in the 1920s. Back then, TV sets were very expensive. As the price came down, more people bought one. In the 1950s, color television was shown for the first time. By the late 1960s, many people had color TVs.

In those days, programs were shown only at certain times. You had to be sure you turned on the TV set, or you missed your program. The VCR (videocassette recorder) was invented in the 1950s, and became popular in the 1970s and 1980s. VCRs allowed people to record a program or film and watch it later. In the 1990s, people began watching digital (数字化的) films on DVDs. They were of better quality (质量) than VCR tapes. By 1997, you could order a DVD from the Internet and it was sent to your house by post.

Now we can download TV shows and films directly to our TV sets. We even watch on our computers, tablets (平板电脑) and phones. This technology continues to improve. Just imagine how we’ll be watching in 100 years. People say that 3D TV and virtual reality (VR) — which makes you feel like you’re actually there — are the future. Whatever it is, we’ll be watching!
