文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章阐述了如何辨别蔬菜和水果。

1 . What is a fruit, and what is a vegetable? Scientists say a fruit develops from the flower of a plant. Fruits have seeds. A food from other parts of a plant is a vegetable. A carrot is a root (根), so it’s a vegetable. Cabbage is leaves, so it’s a vegetable.

For cooking and eating, we tell fruits and vegetables by taste. Fruits are sweet. We often eat them for dessert or a snack. Vegetables are not usually sweet. We usually eat them as part of a meal.

Many of our vegetables have seeds. But we call them vegetables because of their taste. We think of squash (南瓜), cucumbers (黄瓜) and peppers as vegetables. Everyone agrees about that. But people disagree about tomatoes. Are they a fruit or a vegetable? That question went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court! People wanted the Court to decide. And they did. They said tomatoes should be vegetables. But even today, not everyone agrees!

2 . Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was America’s first feature-length(长篇) cartoon. It was first put on in 1937. The year turned out to be a historical moment in the history of American movies.

Before 1937, short cartoons took up most of American movie market. Short subjects, even successful ones like Three Little Pigs, however, didn’t bring in much money. In 1934, Walt Disney had the idea that he would make the Grimm brothers’ well-known story Snow White into a feature-length cartoon. When he first talked about his plans to his colleagues, although they thought highly of Disney’s idea, they were nervous that the movie goers could not sit through a feature-length cartoon. Even his wife , Lillian, tried to discourage him from continuing the cartoon. But Disney believed in his idea. He spent hours telling them about the story, acting out each part. His performance was so powerful that he finally had everyone believing in it.

In 1938, the movie became a box-office success, making more money than any other one at that time. In 1939, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs won Disney an Oscar for having been loved by millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field. The cartoon was generally considered to be Walt Disney’s greatest achievement. It was not the Prince’s kiss that brought her to life, but Walt Disney.

3 . “Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD(公元) 53 wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this. You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave(微波炉), computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a “trendy(赶时髦的), beer-drinking granny”, to one who cooked things.

5 . Many people think the dinosaurs were the biggest animals that ever lived. They are wrong. The world's biggest animal is still living and it lives in the ocean. It is called the blue whale(鲸鱼). Blue whales can be as long as 30 meters and weigh as much as 1,000 kilos. The largest dinosaurs weighed only 500 kilos.

The whale is not only the world's biggest animal, it is also one of the smartest. We know that whales can communicate with each other, although we do not know what they are saying. Perhaps one day we will learn how to communicate with whales, and then they will be able to tell us about themselves.

Although they live in the ocean, whales don't lay eggs like fish do. They are mammals(哺乳动物). They give birth to babies and produce milk inside their own bodies to feed them. Humans are also mammals.

There are lots of stories about whales, but perhaps the most famous story is Moby Dick, which was written by an American writer named Herman Melville. In this book, a sailor named Captain Ahab spends a lot of time trying to find and kill an enormous white whale named Moby Dick.

Sadly, there are not many kinds of whales left. People have killed them for food and other things for thousands of years. However, there are now laws to stop people killing most kinds of whales. So perhaps there will be more of them in years to come.

7 . Thirty years ago, Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell was full of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals and fish. People polluted the lake water.

How did this happen? First, we must think about how water gets into Lake Ponkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past, there were forests all around Lake Ponkapog, so the rainwater was clean.

Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use chemicals in their gardens. They also use chemicals inside their houses for cleaning or killing insects. There are many factories. Factories use chemicals to produce products and some chemicals fall onto the ground from cars or trucks. When it rains, the rainwater picks up all the chemicals from homes, factories, cars and trucks and then carries them into the lake. They pollute the water and kill the animals.

Boats on the lake are also a problem. Lake Ponkapog is a popular place for motorboats. But oil and gas from boats often leak(泄漏) into the lake. So more harmful chemicals go into the water in this way.

People in Hartwell are worried. They love their lake and want to save it. Will it be possible? A clean lake must have clean rainwater going into it. Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and at work. They must also be more careful about gas and oil and other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn’t use motorboats any more on the lake. All these may change people’s life. Only then Lake Ponkapog can be a beautiful, clean lake again.

8 . Four years ago when I was a boy of 11, I got into the biggest trouble as a kid. It was a Saturday morning. Both my parents were out, leaving me and my 10—month—old sister became alone. Anyway, my sister was still asleep in her room. In fact I had the house to myself. I decided to do some drawing. Soon I gave up. Nothing was on TV, so I felt bored and touched the candles on the shelf…I had an idea! What would happen if I set fire to some kitchen paper? Well, of course it went on fire, but it wasn’t the tiny flame(火箭)I’d expected, and I couldn’t blow it out. I threw it on the floor, and then luckily got my dad’s boots(靴子)and stamped it out.

10 . Healthy eating doesn’t just mean what you eat, but how you eat. Here is some advice on healthy eating.

Eat with others. It can help you to know others’ healthy eating habits. If you usually eat with your parents, you will find that the food you eat is more delicious. Listen to your body. Ask yourself if you are really hungry. Have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty—sometimes you are just thirsty, you need no food. Stop eating before you feel full.

Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Since you don’t eat for the past ten hours of sleeping, your body needs food to get energy. You will be smarter after eating breakfast.

Eat healthy snacks like fruits or cheese. We all need snacks sometimes. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks between your three meals. This doesn’t mean that you can eat a bag of chips instead of a meal.

Don’t eat dinner late. Because of the busy life, we always put off eating dinner until the last minute. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8 to 10 hours.
