Thirty years ago, China started to build its own navigation satellite system (卫星导航系统), Beidou.
In 1994, China began making the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) so that we wouldn’t have to use navigation systems from other countries. It’s a lot safer this way.
In 2020, after over 20 years of Chinese scientists’ hard work, Beidou completed its global network (全球网络). That placed China among the group of countries and areas with their own global navigation network, after the US, Russia and the European Union.
Beidou does not just show where you are. It’s also the first to let you send texts where there’s no phone signal (信号) or internet. For example, you can use it to send messages to others in a deep mountain. The Beidou system has played a very important role in keeping people from natural disasters, such as earthquakes, storms and so on. The BDS even helps farmers in China by providing information for planting , making farming smarter.

Dear Mom,
I don’t think you understand my life. You think I should be studying all the time. I know you want me to find a good job when I grow up, but I would like to have a wonderful time, too. You never think about fun things for me to do, like music and sports. Two days ago, when I was watching a football game on TV, you asked me to stop and do my homework. After finishing my homework, I still wasn’t allowed to read my football magazines. You said I had to go to bed early. That was bad enough, but yesterday was the worst day. I bought some computer games, and put them in my bag so that you wouldn’t see them. I told you I had to do my homework first. I knew it was wrong to tell a lie to you, but you told me that Dad would talk to me later. Mom, I didn’t quite like what you did to me! I really love you, Mom, but I wish you could try not to be so hard on me.
Love,
Zhang Ning
