2 . As more information comes out about 10-year-old Cindy Smith’s death(死亡), worries about amusement park safety(游乐场安全性) grow.

Cindy is not the first child who died on an amusement park ride. 25 years ago, the mother of a 14-year-old girl waited to pick up her daughter outside Worlds of Fun. Laura Barry never saw her daughter Rosie alive again.

“My heart goes out to the Smith family more than they can ever possibly know,” said Barry. She is one of the few people who truly know the hurt that family is feeling.

In 1995, Rosie’s mom said that something went wrong on the Timber Wolf the night Rosie died. Police found no evidence(证据). Two men told the police that they saw Rosie standing before she fell out of the car.

“I couldn’t believe that such a thing could happen still and again,” said Barry. She believes Rosie’s death should have been a wakeup call for amusement park safety.

She finds that not much has changed in the past years. Amusement parks race to build bigger, taller, faster rides. In her opinion, amusement parks just try to bring in visitors and give them the idea that riding is good, safe and fun. She believes that parks should have put safety first.

There is no exact number of amusement park deaths each year. It is quite low according to some websites. But Barry doesn’t accept that. “My daughter was the only person that had ever been killed at Worlds of Fun in all of the years, among all of the thousands and thousands of people that went there. The number doesn’t mean anything, you know, because when your child is the one, that’s one too many,” she said.

5 . Six children were in hospital. They got infected(感染) wih E.coli(大肠杆菌). They were very sick, but the doctors didn’t know what caused the infection. They called Dr. Richard Besser. They were sure he would find out the cause.

First, Dr. Besser carefully studied the E. coli that the children had. He looked at the E.coli’s DNA. The DNA showed that this kind of E. coli was dangerous to people. Dr. Besser knew this kind of E. coli could spread from animals to people. Perhaps the children had got close to animals that carried the E.coli. Besser found other E .coli cases in the children’s living place. But it still didn’t make the answer clear.

Dr. Besser then made a list of what the sick children had eaten(吃). They had all eaten cheese, apple juice, and fish. He then made a list of what healthy children in the same place had eaten, and compared(对比 )the two lists. They ate the cheese and fish, but not the apple juice.

Dr. Besser went to the factory making the apple juice. He saw that there were animals around the apple trees, and he saw the workers using dirty fallen apples. 7 . It might be fun to use your smartphone, but be careful. Too much screen time may be harmful to your health.

First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light that the screen gives out. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause eye strain(劳损), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15 minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.

Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that using screens too much can affect(影响) how children’s brains grow. If children use screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains. White matter is a key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children using all kinds of screens.

Third, using screens too much will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronics before bed, especially the young people under 20. 8 . Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.

Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly? On the one hand, the elephants’ main lake, their only water source (来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.

To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.

However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephant were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.

Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations (组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. 10 . It was last January, when I’d just finished a charity(慈善) and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.

When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-yous and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year?

To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity.

February would be neighbors, I decided. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs; our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play; …

While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app, appreciating(欣赏) other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.

In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers and parenting role models. In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:

Dear Julie,

I’ve been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary (周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.

Thank you. We miss you.

Love,

Gina

I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.”

On December 31, I wrote my last card — to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me. Gratitude.

1. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A.writing thank-you notesB.putting the phone away
C.taking the train back homeD.raising money for charity
2. How did Julie most probably feel after reading the note from Gina?
A.Shy and surprised.B.Pleased and relaxed.
C.Nervous and excited.D.Moved and encouraged.
3. The theme of the December notes might be “________”.
A.photosB.familyC.holidaysD.community
4. What did Gina get by doing her task according to the passage?
A.Many thanks from her neighbors.B.More time to appreciate her own life.
C.More help from people around her.D.Happy moments to be with her friends.
5. The best title for the passage can be ________.
A.My Thank You YearB.An Amazing Trip
C.Happiness inside UsD.Important People in Our Life
