文章大意:本文主要介绍北京建筑布局中的中轴线及其历史和深远影响。
1 .

People have backbones(脊梁).So do cities. For Beijing, a city with 3, 000 years of history. Its backbone is the central axis(中轴线).

The central axis is the “line” that separates(分开) the eastern and western parts of Beijing. At 7.8 kilometers long, it runs from Yongding Gate in the south to the Bell Tower and Drum Tower in the north.Along the axis, there are many important buildings, including Tian’anmen Square, Jingshan Park, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven(天坛), and so on.

The central axis has influenced(影响) the city for hundreds of years. Its building started in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and continued during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, modern buildings run along the central axis. They include the National Stadium in the north, and Beijing Daxing International Airport in the south.

Why the central axis? It shows important ideas from traditional Chinese culture. Ancient people saw the center of places as important. When building cities, they put royal palaces(皇家宫殿) in the center. Other important buildings were built around the center.

Beijing was not the first city to use a central axis. During the Three Kingdoms period(220-280), the city Yecheng had a street running from the east to the west. It separated the royal palaces from common people’s living and business areas. In Chang’an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty(618-907), there was a wide street from the north to the south.
