1 . ①When it comes to Chinese students considering studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unfortunately, it’s likely that students with those beliefs will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport.

②So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?

③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical thinking(批判性思维) and teamwork. In a normal American classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has his/her own responsibility.

④So don’t worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don’t be afraid to ask any questions. The discussions, or sometimes ever arguments, that your group members and you hold are likely to be the beginning of a friendship.

⑤Beside schoolwork, another important thing faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents’ cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when faced with the challenges of getting used to a new environment.

⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships. Sign up for school activities, and give yourself permission to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you’re grateful for every evening, as well as three things you’re looking forward to every morning.

⑦Studying abroad is never simple. In fact, there will be many difficulties every day. But I’m sure you will overcome your difficulties and make your time overseas a success.

2 . Most of us are used to using jet hand dryers (喷射式干手器) in public restrooms. They are surely very convenient — all we need to do is to hold up our hands for a few seconds until they are dry. And more importantly, they’re supposed to be hygienic (卫生的).

However, a new study published in the journal Hospital Infection found that jet hand dryers actually spread more dangerous bacteria (细菌) than paper towels.

In the study, two restrooms in each of three different hospitals in the UK, France and Italy were required to provide both jet air dryers and paper towels for people to use. But on certain days, only either the hand dryer or the paper towel dispenser (自动出纸机) was available to use.

The scientists found that when only the hand dryer was available, the amount of bacteria in the restrooms was 27 times higher than on other days.

According to study leader Mark Wilcox, an expert in medical microbiology at Leeds University, UK, air dryers spread harmful bacteria all over the room. This means that if people use these dryers, they’re more likely to pick up bacteria.

At the same time, however, this raises the question — why the bacteria exists(存在) if people wash their hands after using the restroom.

“The problem starts because some people do not wash their hands properly,” Wilcox told The Telegraph. In other words, poor hand-washing leads to a large amount of bacteria being left on your hands.

1. It was found that the restrooms had more bacteria when __________.
A.only the hand dryer was available to use
B.only paper towels were available to use
C.both the hand dryer and the paper towel dispenser were available to use
D.neither the hand dryer nor the paper towel dispenser were available to use
2. According to the last paragraph, how can we stop bacteria?
A.By only using clean restrooms.B.By not using public restrooms.
C.By using paper towels.D.By washing our hands properly.
3. If we divide the article into three parts, which one can be the best?
A.①/②③④⑤/⑥⑦B.①/②③/④⑤⑥⑦C.①/②③④⑤⑥⑦D.①②/③④⑤⑥⑦
4. What can we infer from the passage??
A.Modern technology causes more problems.
B.Good habits can protect you from danger.
C.It’s common to pick up bacteria public places.
D.Scientists will find a way to improve hand dryers.

3 . Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and sadness, failure and success, hope and despair. Life is a learning process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day, we learn to deal with all kinds of problems.

________ Love makes you feel wanted. Without love, a person could become cruel. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who show us with love and care. They teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. But we don’t always care about it. It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands others’ feelings.

Happiness can bring people a peaceful mind. No mind is happy without peace. Things like failure and illness may bring sadness, but sadness will pass away.

Failure is the way to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings money, fame and self-respect.

Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hours, because after every night there is a day.

Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is out of our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dark. So the only choice is to work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.

4 . In most films about space, whenever Earth faces a disaster, the solution is always running away from the planet in spaceships or expecting one or a group of superheroes to save it in the end. But the latest Chinese science fiction (sci-fi) movie, The Wandering Earth (《流浪地球)), offers a different and more ambitious(有野心的) idea. In the film, based on a short story by Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin, Earth is in danger of being destroyed by the dying sun. Facing, the very danger, humans around the world work together to build a huge engine system that will push Earth away from the sun. Instead of simply leaving Earth behind — again — this time we’re taking it with us.

The Wandering Earth achieved great success during the Spring Festival this year. As China’s first homemade sci-fi blockbuster, the film has led to heated discussions. The New York Times reported that “It will be a symbol of a new era (时代) in Chinese film making.” Famous Hollywood director James Cameron also wrote on Sina Weibo that The Wandering Earth is a breakthrough of Chinese sci-fi films and is worth more attention worldwide. The “ambition” of the sci-fi film, however, didn’t come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has been the softest part in most Chinese people’s mind. One old saying is luoyeguigen, which means returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree. Or as an ancient poem reads, “The season called the White Dew begins tonight/Nowhere as in our native place is the moon so bright.” These both show the close relationship that Chinese people have had with their homeland. This special cultural background is probably what makes The Wandering Earth different from Hollywood-style space films.

And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its Chinese sci-fi story. The film was on Feb 5, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns. So to them, there is only one possible way to tell the story: Earth goes wherever humans go, because it’s our home.

The director of the movie, Guo Fan, said, “China’s rapid development in recent years has also allowed fertile (肥沃的) soil for the scientific, literature and films to grow. We hope that the soil will produce more amazing fruits of Chinese sci-fi film making in the near future.”

1. About the film The Wandering Earth, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.It’s a Chinese sci-fi movie.
B.It’s different from most Hollywood films.
C.It is based on a short story by Liu Cixin.
D.It was made by Hollywood director James Cameron.
2. ______ play(s) a role in the movie’s success.

5 . Small talk like “What do you have there? Ice-cream?” or “The weather today is beautiful, isn't it?” is a waste of time, according to some people. But scientists believe that it is actually more useful than it may appear to be.

One example comes when you are on a train or a plane. The thought of talking to the stranger can be scary and silly. But a study by the University of Chicago found that people who chat to strangers enjoy a better ride than those who sit in silence or keep playing their phones.

In the study, researchers asked people at Chicago train stations to start conversations with fellow travelers. Most of them refused to do so at first because they didn't expect to get a friendly answer. But the result is the opposite-most strangers didn't refuse to be talked to; instead, they were glad to talk to.

“Human beings are social animals,” Nicholas Epley, one of the researchers said, “Other people are people, too. And it turns out that they'd like to get to know you.”

What's more, small talk with strangers can help you feel related to your surroundings(环境). Some studies found when people are often smiled at and spoken to, there is more chance for them to have a stronger sense of belonging instead of feeling like they are being forgotten.

However, if you are already comfortable enough to make small talk with strangers, you should try to develop it into something “bigger”.

A 2010 study proved that having a deep and meaningful conversation gives you even more happiness than small talk. Participants(参与者) in the study reported that compared with some simple greetings and replies, they were a lot happier when they went on with the small talk and further it into in-depth conversations.

But deep conversations can start with small talk, can't they? So the first step is to start talking, no matter how casual the topic is. And who knows, maybe an opening line as simple as “I like your hat” could lead to a serious conversation in which you learn a lot from a stranger.

1. According to Nicholas Epley, what is the reason for the result of the study by the University of Chicago?
A.Most people are scared of being refused.
B.People are naturally interested in others.
C.People are afraid of being lonely or bored.
D.People try to show their good side to strangers.
2. Which of the following is an advantage of small talk?
A.Wasting less time.
B.Getting more smiles.
C.Staying away from phones for a little while.
D.Feeling like you are a part of your surroundings.
3. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
(①②③④⑤⑥⑦⑧=Paragraphs1-8)
A.①/②③④⑤/⑥⑦/⑧B.①/②③④/⑤⑥⑦/⑧
C.①/②③/④⑤/⑥⑦⑧D.①/②③④⑤/⑥⑦⑧
4. What can we infer about the author's attitude toward small talk?
A.The author thinks deep conversations may start before small talk.
B.The author believes small talk is useless without deep conversations.
C.The author agrees people should start small talk actively.
D.The author doubts whether people should start small talk.

6 . Have you seen All is Well which is the most popular TV series in 2019? It is not easy to be one of the top ten trending hashtages (热搜) on Weibo for many days. All is Well has done just that.

The show tells the story of a Chinese family torn by internal conflict (内部冲突). The main character, Su Mingyu, hardly communicates with her father and her two brothers.

Nowadays, there is often a lack of understanding between parents and children. Parents often complain about their children’s unreasonable behavior, while children usually think their parents are too old-fashionable. Then, when a child has a problem, he usually goes out, leaving his parents in the dark.

__________________________________. First, the two generations, having grown up at different times, have different likes and dislikes for the things around them and so have a little in common to talk about. Second, parents and children, due to the misunderstanding between them, may even feel it uncomfortable to sit and face with each other talking. Finally, with the pace of modern life becoming faster and faster, both parents and children are too busy to spare enough time to exchange ideas, even if they find it necessary to communicate. As a result, the gap between them is growing wider and wider.

However, there is another type of parents who spoil(溺爱) their children a lot. They have a common sense that their children are so precious to them so they always try their best to give their children a happy and meaningful life. Therefore, an increasing number of parents spoil their children and do everything for them, even control their life. For example, many children have to obey their parents’ idea about which school they should go into after they graduate; some children must go to art classes like dancing, piano and painting even though they have no interest in them; what’s more, some strict parents even involve children’s freedom about what friends they should make. On the one hand, these parents care and protect their children, however, on the other hand they may do harm to their children.

As far as I am concerned, it is necessary that parents should give their children more space and freedom so that their children may become more independent.

1. All is Well is a __________.
A.TV seriesB.sitcomC.filmD.game
2. The missing part in paragraph 4 can be ________.
A.There are some possible reasons for the present situation.
B.Here is some advice on how to increase the communication between them.
C.Parents and children should communicate with each other.
D.Parents have no time to care for their children.
3. If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?
(①=para.1     ②=para.2   ③=para.3 ④=para.4   ⑤=para.5   ⑥=para.6)
A.①;②③④⑤;⑥B.①②;③④⑤;⑥
C.①②;③④;⑤⑥D.①②③;④⑤;⑥
4. According to the passage, which following is TRUE?
A.Su Mingyu has a better understanding for her father and her brother.
B.Parents should make all decisions for their children to make them go into a good university.
C.Strict parents who involve children’s freedom do harm to their children.
D.Spoiled children can become more independent, brave and responsible.

9 . AI(人工智能)can help us make phone calls, find the place we want to go and play games. And now, AI can do even more things.

Researchers have created the first translation system which makes sure you’ll have no difficulty in communicating in a foreign country.

The system, called the Pioneer, will enter the market in 2019. When set in an earbud(耳塞), it fits comfortably in the ear. A pair of earpieces(听筒)is needed, one for each user. When the speaker talks, the Pioneer in the ear picks up the sound. And then the sound goes through the translation system that changes it into text in the listener’s language. Then, the text is translated into a spoken form, and at last the Pioneer “whispers(私语)” it back to the listener in his or her language. As a result, the listener can understand the other person even though he or she doesn’t know the speaker’s language at all.

But how can the Pioneer make sure the translation is correct? Researchers tried many ways to improve the system’s translation abilities.

In one method, the system translates every sentence from Language A to Language B, and translates the sentence back from Language B into Language A. This way, the system can improve itself and learn from its own mistakes.

Another way needs the system to repeat the process of translating the same sentence over and over again. This takes about three months and then the system can improve the ability of its translation.
