1 . Most of us are used to using jet hand dryers (喷射式干手器) in public restrooms. They are surely very convenient — all we need to do is to hold up our hands for a few seconds until they are dry. And more importantly, they’re supposed to be hygienic (卫生的).

However, a new study published in the journal Hospital Infection found that jet hand dryers actually spread more dangerous bacteria (细菌) than paper towels.

In the study, two restrooms in each of three different hospitals in the UK, France and Italy were required to provide both jet air dryers and paper towels for people to use. But on certain days, only either the hand dryer or the paper towel dispenser (自动出纸机) was available to use.

The scientists found that when only the hand dryer was available, the amount of bacteria in the restrooms was 27 times higher than on other days.

According to study leader Mark Wilcox, an expert in medical microbiology at Leeds University, UK, air dryers spread harmful bacteria all over the room. This means that if people use these dryers, they’re more likely to pick up bacteria.

At the same time, however, this raises the question — why the bacteria exists(存在) if people wash their hands after using the restroom.

“The problem starts because some people do not wash their hands properly,” Wilcox told The Telegraph. In other words, poor hand-washing leads to a large amount of bacteria being left on your hands.

4 . Today's teens have grown up online. They make friends online. They do homework online. And surely they get their news online. But because they are so comfortable with the Internet, they seldom question the news stories online and pass along to their friends.

Now William Colglazier, a history teacher at a high school in America, is teaching his students how to think critically(批判性地) about online information and recognize(识别) a fake(假的) news story.

His idea came from a study on people's online reasoning(推理) at Stanford University. The study found that young people lack(缺少) ability to reason about the information on the Internet Most middle school students in the study could not tell the difference between an advertisement and a news story, and high school and college students fully trusted the websites ending in ".org".

The good news is that, according to Colglazier, once teens realize they've been cheated, they have strong will to tell truth from lies. "But they need some advice on how to find evidence(证据) and how to recognize when others use poor argumentation(论据)," he said. Some of the advice that Colglazier offers his students include moving off the site to find more information about the site, the writer's motivations(动机) and the organization behind the news story.

Colglazier shared some of his course with other teens in Teen Vogue, a famous magazine. He hopes more kids would take away some knowledge about thinking critically when they read news online. 5 . In the past, Chinese buyers liked foreign brands better, thinking that products made by American or European companies are of higher quality than Chinese ones. But now that is no longer the case.

“Chinese people born before 1985 generally think that foreign bands are better than Chinese ones”, William Li told Business Insider during a recent interview on CCTV 9. But for those who were born after 1985, it is a different picture.

“When I first went to the United Kingdom in 1997, I thought that the difference between China and Europe was quite big.” Li said. “But for those born in the 1990s, when they visit Europe or the US, they do not think there is a big difference.”

The change in thinking among Chinese buyers is showing up in many markets in China where western companies controlled before. A study by Credit Suisse which came out in March found that more and more young Chinese buyers are showing a home brand bias.

More than 90% of young Chinese buyers would prefer to buy home brands, according to the study. At the same time, home companies producing food, drinks, or personal care products raised their share (份额) of the market by 33% over the last ten years to nearly 70%.

“Chinese buyers, especially the younger ones, don’t just believe that foreign brands are better. Right now, Chinese buyers think China is good and ‘Made in China’ is not bad at all”, Charlie Chen, head of China buyer research at Credit Suisse, told South China Morning Post in March.

The Chinese smart phone market is controlled by home companies Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Apple is the only foreign brand in the top five, but it has lost large ground to the home brands in recent years. Its market share is believed to go down to 37% from a 2015 high of 54%.
