3 . ①The twentieth century saw greater changes than any century before: changes for the better, changes for the worse; changes that brought a lot of benefits (好处) to human beings, changes that put man in danger. Many things caused the changes, but, in my opinion, the most important was the progress in science.

②Scientific research in physics and biology has vastly broadened our views. It has given us a deeper knowledge of the structure of matter and of the universe; it has brought us a better understanding of the nature of life and of its continuous development. Technology in the application (应用) of science has made big advancesthat have benefited us in nearly every part of life.

③The continuation of such activities in the twenty-first century will result in even greater advantages to human beings: in pure science —a wider and deeper knowledge in all fields of learning; in applied science —a more reasonable sharing of material benefits, and better protection of the environment.

④Sadly, however, there is another side to the picture. The creativity of science has been employed in doing damage to mankind. The application of science and technology to the development and production of weapons of mass destruction (大规模杀伤武器) has created a real danger to the continued existence (存在) of the human race on this planet. We have seen this happen in the case of nuclear weapons. Although their actual use has so far occurred only in the Second World War, the number of nuclear weapons that were produced and made ready for use was so large that if the weapons had actually been used, the result could have been the ruin of the human race, as well as of many kinds of animals.

⑤William Shakespeare said, “The web of our life is of a mingled yarn (纱线), good and ill together.” The above brief review of the application of only one part of human activities — science seems to prove what Shakespeare said. But does it have to be so? Must the ill always go together with the good? Are we biologically programmed for war?

1. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A.B.C.D.
2. From the fourth paragraph, we can infer (推断) that .
A.a great many nuclear weapons were actually used for war
B.a large number of nuclear weapons should have been used for war
C.the author is doubtful about the ruin of human beings by nuclear weapons
D.the author is anxious (焦虑的) about the huge number of nuclear weapons on the earth
3. The underlined word "mingled" in the last paragraph most probably means .
A.simpleB.mixedC.sadD.happy
4. What do you think the author is most likely to suggest if he continues to write?
A.Further application of science to war.
B.More reading of William Shakespeare.
C.Proper use of science in the new century.
D.Effective ways to separate the good from the ill.

4 . You know now that 5G can give you a faster online experience. In fact, 5G can do a lot more than just this. Here are some of the things 5G can do.

Education

Do you have live classes at home? With 5G, you can have classes outside your home. The class can go as smoothly as the ones you have at home. Students from poor areas can have the chance to study just like you do.

5 . We all need physical exercise. Exercise uses up food we eat and keeps the body energetic. If you exercise several times a week, you will stay happy and healthy.

Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In the US, many people don't have enough exercise because it is hard for them. People have to work from morning to late afternoon, so they don't have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. It is impossible for them to get much exercise in this way.

Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, most of people cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. This is not good in two ways. First, these people don't have a chance to exercise because they are sitting in their cars for two to four hours each day. Second, driving is challenging especially in rush hours and needs too much attention. It makes a person very tired. So, when these people arrive home at night, they don't want to take exercise after work.

Today, many people in the West are overweight which causes health problems for them. Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. 6 . Captain(船长) Nemo invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island, “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”

“I do,” replied the captain. “But these forests are under the sea.”

After going through a door, we were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We were going deeper and deeper. At 100 metres deep, we could see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed(海草), and all their “branches” were vertical(垂直的).We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest.

Suddenly, I saw a large sea spider about a metre tall. It was going to attack me. Captain Nemo's man killed it with his gun, but it reminded me that the sea could be as dangerous as it was beautiful. When we reached 150 metres, it was dark. The sun's light could not reach this depth(深度). We turned on our lights. We could see about 20 metres around us. Finally, we found Crespo Island—where a steep rock wall rose in front of us.

We could go no further, so we walked back towards the Nautilus. Suddenly, Captain Nemo stopped and shot an animal with his gun, it was a beautiful and rare sea otter(水獭).
