1 . ①When it comes to Chinese students considering studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unfortunately, it’s likely that students with those beliefs will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport.

②So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?

③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical thinking(批判性思维) and teamwork. In a normal American classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has his/her own responsibility.

④So don’t worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don’t be afraid to ask any questions. The discussions, or sometimes ever arguments, that your group members and you hold are likely to be the beginning of a friendship.

⑤Beside schoolwork, another important thing faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents’ cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when faced with the challenges of getting used to a new environment.

⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships. Sign up for school activities, and give yourself permission to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you’re grateful for every evening, as well as three things you’re looking forward to every morning.

⑦Studying abroad is never simple. In fact, there will be many difficulties every day. But I’m sure you will overcome your difficulties and make your time overseas a success.

A.teachersB.parentsC.studentsD.travelers
2. Students in America finish their schoolwork by ________.

2 . Mark Zuckerberg, who starts the social network Facebook, often wears jeans and a T-shirt to work, including to important business meetings. Not everyone agrees with him. Some people say he doesn’t look serious this way.

Harvard Business School researcher Franccsca Gino, has a different idea. While most people seem to think that dressing differently from those around you generally has a bad influence, she believes it can actually have a positive (积极的)effect. And, she has done experiments(实验) to support her idea. When her researchers, wearing sportswear, visited the expensive shops in Italy, they were usually viewed as wealthier and more important people than those who were well-dressed in designer clothes.

Do people always view less formal(正式的) clothing more positively? Researchers in France took their research out into the street to the general(普通的)public. The video they made shows an actor dressed in a well-cut suit and shiny shoes. While walking along the road, he begins to cough badly, stops to catch his breath and falls down. Before he even calls for help, people rush to help him. In another video, the actor appears at the same crowded place and repeats the actions in exactly the same way. But this time, no one comes to help. What’s the difference? He’s wearing untidy clothes and looks like homeless person. In a situation like this, the clothes you’re wearing could mean the difference between life and death.

It seems that our clothing doesn’t only change the way others view us, but also the way we see ourselves. In an experiment testing students’ ability to pay attention to details(细节), the group wearing white lab coats did the best. Why? Researchers told them that they were wearing the doctors’ coats. The experiment didn’t show whether such influences would last long. More experiments are needed in the future before we decide to make the doctors’ coats a must of fashion.

1. Mark Zuckerberg is not considered serious by some people because _______.
A.he does not listen to others’ adviceB.he sets up network of video games
C.he wears jeans and a T-shirt to workD.he often plays jokes at business meetings
2. Which of the following is Gino’s opinion according to Paragraph 2?
A.It is necessary to buy expensive clothes.
B.Wearing less formal clothes is in fact good.
C.It is bad to dress differently from people around you.
D.Wearing sports clothes makes you look less important.
3. In Paragraph 3, the wrier proves(证明) his (her) opinion mainly _______.
A.by giving reasonsB.by using pictures
C.by comparing factsD.by listing numbers
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.What we wear makes a difference.
B.Formal clothing makes a wise man.
C.Our value depends on what we wear.
D.Our clothing influences our characters.

4 .

In the 1800s, people began hunting whales in large numbers for their meat, bones, skin and blubber(脂). Before electricity, many people used oil lamps for light. Whale blubber could be turned into lamp oil.

During the 1930-1931 whaling season, as many as 29,000 blue whales were hunted. Scientists believe humans killed 350,000 blue whales during the years.

In 1966, the International Whaling Commission forbade the hunting of blue whales. However, some people went on hunting them. As whaling equipment and ships improved, many more blue whales were killed.

Scientists are not sure of the exact population of blue whales today. They think it is between 10,000 and 25,000. It is clear that the number of blue whales is quite small.

Now blue whales are protected from whaling, but they still face other problems. Blue whales are sometimes hit by large ships. Some of them die from the accidents caused by these ships. They also cut their skin and become sick in fishing gear(渔具) that is left behind in the ocean.

Climate change also affects whales. The world’s oceans are growing warmer. The krill(鳞虾)that blue whales rely on as food can live only in cool water. With less krill in the ocean, blue whales will have less to eat.

5 . Most teens try very hard to look good. They wear beautiful clothes, cool shoes and fashionable sunglasses. They may want to stay home from school because of the smallest pimple(粉刺). I know because I used to focus only on my appearance. However, now I work hard to see more than just my looks. I'll explain why.

Firstly, if you only focus on how you look, you'll also focus only on the appearance of others. As a result, you'll become a person who can't see the truly important characteristics(品质) in others. Some people don't follow the latest fashion trends. If you avoid getting to know them, you'll miss out on many interesting and valuable relationships in your life.

Moreover, if you focus only on your appearance, you'll miss out on chances to improve your abilities. For example, if you spend all your time trying to look fashionable, you won't have any time to become a better musician or improve your grades at school. Even the most attractive people need to have skills to succeed in life.

In addition, focusing only on your looks can make you feel disappointed about yourself. If you don't worry about a pimple on your face, you'll be less likely to feel unhappy about yourself. On the whole, happy people like to communicate with the world in a positive way. Therefore, feeling happy is more important than looking good. You should work hard at feeling good, not just looking good.

I used to focus only on how I looked. However, now I work hard to focus on all the different parts of myself—my appearance, personality, abilities, and so on. So I'm a much happier person. If you take my advice, you'll be a happier person too. Your first step is to look at yourself without a mirror!

1. What's the writer's purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A.To introduce his opinion on looks.B.To explain how important your look is.
C.To let you buy more beautiful things.D.To tell you what he used to be like.
2. According to the writer, focusing only on your appearance ________.
A.encourages you to enjoy the worldB.helps you see important points in others
C.causes you to feel proud of yourselfD.stops you from improving your abilities
3. The passage is about the importance of ________.
A.focusing on your physical appearanceB.improving your abilities and skills
C.seeing all the different parts of yourselfD.cool clothes and fashionable accessories
4. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A.B.C.D.

6 . Think about how much time you spent outside last week. I mean “really outside”. Walking from the car into the mall doesn't count. Now think about how much time you spent inside: on the Internet or playing video games or watching TV.

“I play inside more than outside,” said Casey M. of South Bend, Indiana. “I like to play games on the computer because I think it's very exciting.”

If you're like Casey, it's likely that you spend more time inside than outside. Kids spent two fewer hours per week on sports and outdoor activities in the early 2010s than kids did in the early 1990s.

Are you staying inside because you need a place to go to? People fill open places with buildings. Rhonada Clements said, “Students still need some special places. There they are free to go and meet friends. And they can make them relax there. What's more, parents should spend more time staying with their kids.”

Even when there is a place to go to, personal safety is a problem. “I wish I could play outside more.” said Angela P. of   New Haven, Connecticut. “There is a park down the street, but my mom worries about my safety when I go there by myself.” Many kids are home alone in the afternoons because their parents tell them not to leave the house. Most parents always think it's dangerous for their children to stay outside.

1. What can we know from the first three paragraphs?
A.A lot of people like playing outside.
B.A lot of people like playing computer games.
C.More and more people like watching TV with their family.
D.More and more people like spending time inside.
2. The underlined word “they” here refers to ________.
A.special placesB.people C.students   D. friends
3. Why do parents tell their children not to leave their houses?
A.Because they want their children to spend more time with them.
B.Because they think it's dangerous for their children to go outside alone.
C.Because they are afraid their children won't finish their homework.
D.Because they need their children to do some housework at home.
4. How did the writer write the passage?
A.From writing about himself to writing about other people.
B.Firstly tell us a fact and then tell us the fact is wrong.
C.Firstly talk to the parents and then talk to the teachers.
D.Firstly give a question and then answer the question.

7 . O. Henry was well-known as an American short-story writer. His real name was William-Sidney Porter. He was born on 11 September, 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Porter attended a school taught by his aunt and then worked in his uncle's drugstore. The working experience helped him a lot. He saw the humour in everyday life, and made notes of all the colourful characters he met, which became the fodder (素材) for his future stories. In 1882 he went to Texas, and began writing at about the time of his marriage to Athol Estes in 1887, and in 1894 he started a humorous weekly, The Rolling Stone.

In 1902 Porter arrived in New York. He produced a story a week for the New York World, writing also for magazines. His first book, Cabbages and Kings (1904), showed fantastic characters against exotic backgrounds. Then a number of his stories came out. Among them, The Gift of the Magi was popular. The story was about James and Della, a young couple who were poor but still tried to give each other a nice gift on Christmas Eve.

In the following years came The Voice of the City (1908), The Gentle Grafter (1908), Roads of Destiny (1909), Options (1909), and Whirligigs (1910). Whirligigs contains perhaps Porter's funniest story, The Ransom of Red Chief. These stories were printed under another name, his favourite being “O. Henry”.

8 . It's common that a Japanese-American bows on the phone—but only in Japanese. Behaviors and manners can become so routine that they appear even when there's no need for them. Those who are bilingual(双语的) and bicultural know first-hand that how we behave can depend on what language we are speaking. Scientists have shown that who you are in the moment can depend on the language you are using at that time.

This is because when you have an experience, the language you are using becomes associated(关联的) with it. For bilingual people, this means certain memories are more closely associated with one language than the other—a phenomenon called language-dependent memory. For example, a childhood memory is more likely to be remembered when the language spoken during that childhood event is spoken again.

How we think and feel can change depending on what language we are using. For example, people who are bilingual have an increased stress response when listening to the words of scolding(责骂) in a native language(母语) . This may be, in part, because our early memories associated with learning a “bad” word or being scolded by our parents happened in our native language.

Because emotions(情感) play a key role in how we make decisions, people are often wiser when making choices in the less emotional foreign language. Language can even influence our decisions. When asked whether they would be willing to give one person's life to save a group, people who speak more than one language are much more likely to say “yes” when answering in a foreign language. The unpleasant feelings that can prevent us from making difficult choices are reduced when we're using a non-native language.

The language we speak has an influence on how we think, feel, and even behave. In a way, knowing different languages can provide people with different views through which to see the world.

1. Why is the example of the Japanese-American mentioned?
A.To show the influence of culture is huge.
B.To show bowing is Japanese people's routine.
C.To show Japanese people are polite on the phone.
D.To show one's use of language affects one's behavior.
2. What does language-dependent memory mean?
A.One's memory influences one's use of language.
B.Learning more languages improves one's memory.
C.One's memory has to do with one's use of language.
D.A good memory brings good language learning results.
3. What's the structure of the text?
A.①-②③④-⑤B.①-②③-④⑤
C.①②③-④-⑤D.①②-③-④⑤
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.You are actually what you are speaking.
B.Native languages make people speak more.
C.Different languages have different influences.

10 . Most of us don't like about food until we start feeling hungry, but eating important in life. To talk about food and eating is to talk about one of the most common subjects we know. Eating is just like breathing or sleeping, so every day, so ordinary, it does not receive much notice.

However, what, where, when, how, and with whom we eat say a great deal about who we are. Do you use chopsticks? Do you hold the knife backward? Do you chew with your mouth open? All these eating habits say something about you. They are messages even when we are not trying to say anything. Food and the ways we eat it, like clothes and the way we wear them, tell who and what we are.

We learn our eating habits very early in life. We usually have strong feeling about our childhood foods. Foods we learn to like our early years probably have a special meaning for us forever because they are connected to people and things we love. Mom's cheers or the way Dad cuts the bread crusts just right bringing up feelings of love and comfort.

People use food and eating to mark the seasons and the important moments in life (such as growing up and getting married), or to honor gods, and to say something about themselves. People will eat different foods for different holidays. Sometimes people ever explain why they eat certain things on certain days. Americans do that sort of explaining at Thanksgiving. They eat Turkey, corn, and Indian pudding because their ancestors(祖先)ate them at the first Thanksgiving. Those foods mean something to Americans.

As you can see, food and eating mark people's shared experiences, but they can also mark the differences. In the sense, we truly are what we eat.

1. You can probably read the article from a magazine about _______________.
A.travelingB.food and culture
C.clothes and fashionD.sports
2. Why do people have strong feeling about childhood foods?
A.Because the foods may connect to the beloved people or things.
B.Because most of the people like eating cheese and bread.
C.Because the cheese made by Mom and Dad tastes delicious.
D.Because people learn the eating habits very early.
3. Which of the following shows the proper structure of this passage?
A.B.C.D.
4. What does the sentence "we truly are what we eat" mean according to the passage?
A.We need to eat healthy food to keep fit.B.The way we eat tells a lot about us.
C.We eat some special food on special days.D.It's the food that makes us different.
