In the 1800s, people began hunting whales in large numbers for their meat, bones, skin and blubber（脂）. Before electricity, many people used oil lamps for light. Whale blubber could be turned into lamp oil.

7 . O. Henry was well-known as an American short-story writer. His real name was William-Sidney Porter. He was born on 11 September, 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Porter attended a school taught by his aunt and then worked in his uncle's drugstore. The working experience helped him a lot. He saw the humour in everyday life, and made notes of all the colourful characters he met, which became the fodder (素材) for his future stories.
