March 16 is National Panda Day in the United States. Last year, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC, used the day to celebrate the 50th anniversary (周年) of the first two giant pandas coming into its care. The celebration would last six months.
In 1972, the US president (总统) Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, made a historic visit to China. On her second day in the country, Pat went to the Beijing Zoo to see pandas. At a dinner before they left China, Zhou Enlai told Pat that China would give away two pandas to the US. (A) This surprised her and made her very happy. The pandas, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing arrived at the National Zoo on April 16, 1972. They lived there for more than 20 years, and died in the 1990s.
A new panda couple, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, arrived at the zoo in 2000. They still live at the zoo with their child, Xiao Qiji. The couple’s other three children, Tai Shan, Bao Bao and Bei Bei were returned to China.
Usually, the workers of the zoo visit their Chinese partners several times a year to share information about pandas. Chinese experts also go to the US. During Covid-19, (B) they communicated with each other through messages and video calls. It has been as good as it always is, as they have had a good relationship for many years. They hope the program will last at least 50 more years.

Mike loves cats very much. He wants to buy a pet cat and he joins a chat group named Happy Cat Shop (7). Now he is talking with the shopkeeper, Lily.
Happy Cat Shop (7)
Mike: Good morning, Lily! Could you tell me more details about cats?
Lily: Good morning, Mike! Definitely! Cats provide friendship, fun and entertainment for people of all ages.
Mike: It is said cats are independent.
Lily: Yes. But they still have basic care requirements. They need regular meals, exercise, entertainment and vet (善医) care.
Mike: I see. What should I consider before I decide to own a cat?
Lily: There are a number of things to consider: the reasons why you want a cat, the amount of time you can spend caring for your cat, the cost of feeding and caring for a cat, your lifestyle, and arrangements for your cat when you travel.
Mike: Thanks. I’ll think it over. Any other tips for choosing a cat?
Lily: You have many choices when choosing a cat: a kitten or an adult, long-haired or short-haired, male or female. Remember that the type of cat you desire may not suit your lifestyle, family or environment.
Mike: What are the differences between a kitten and an adult cat?
Lily:
Lily: As you can see, kittens are lovely, but they require a lot of attention and more protection. They need regular exercise, playtime and training. Sometimes they may play with your furniture (家具).
Mike: Kittens are So cute! But I only have time after work. How about adult cats?
Lily: Adult cats:
➢are usually not as destructive to furniture as kittens.
➢are just as likely to make friends with you as kittens.
Mike: Great! Before I buy one, will it be carefully checked for health problems?
Lily: Sure. Before they are sold, all cats will be regularly checked by a vet.

The giant panda Hua Hua, a national darling, attracted 264,000 visitors to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, which was the second most popular place during the May Day in 2023.
He Hua (also called Hua Hua) will soon be three years old. She has won the hearts of the visitors because she is sweet-tempered (性格温顺的) and unable to climb trees. What’s more, she is different from other giant pandas because of her white fur. For the reasons above, some of the visitors went to see her several times to stay with Hua Hua a little longer, some of them even expressed the wish of taking care of her if possible.
As more and more people become interested in pandas, the giant panda craze has swept across the world. During the May Day, visitors were crazy to buy things related to pandas. The sales have let the media call it “giant panda economy”. The last giant panda to cause a rush (引起追捧热潮) was the mascot (吉祥物) for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, Bing DwenDwen, which was created according to the image of a giant panda. More than 1.4million toy mascots were sold during the games.
Behind the “giant panda craze” is also Chinese government’s help with better development of the giant panda habitats (栖息地). So the wild population of giant pandas in China has increased from 1,114 in the 1970s to 1,864 now.

6 . Winter is hard for most animals. So some birds and animals fly to the south.
The groundhog (土拨鼠), however, deals with winter differently. As soon as it feels the weather turning cold, it starts to dig a hole at least five feet underground. There it makes a comfortable home with leaves and grass. It spends the cold winter months in its underground bed and it won’t wake up until spring.
The groundhog doesn’t eat at all during the winter. Instead, it eats as much and as often as it can during the summer. As winter comes, the groundhog becomes so fat that it can hardly move. When it starts to feel sleepy, it goes back to the home and falls into a deep sleep. Its breathing almost stops, its heart slows to about four beats a minute and its body temperature falls to just above 0℃ during the sleep. When it wakes up in spring, its weight (重量) is only half of what it was in the fall. By February or March, it’s ready to leave its hole.
So years ago, when science and technology was less developed, people often waited for the first groundhog to stick its head out above ground as it showed that spring was coming. This gave rise to a number of stories. One of them is about a groundhog called Phil. This animal could forecast (预测) the weather. Phil stuck his head out above ground and looked around every February 2nd. If he saw his shadow (影子), it meant that there would be an extended (延长的) winter of six weeks. If the weather was cloudy and he didn’t see his shadow, it meant spring would be early.
