4 . There is a close relationship between humans and dogs for thousands of years. We love dogs for many reasons, including their loyalty (忠诚的), their sense of fun and how soft they are. Now researchers have found another reason why humans might like dogs: their wagging (摇摆的) tails.
A research team looked at more than 100 studies on tail-wagging. They noted that dogs wag their tails to communicate, but different types of tail-wagging might be sending different messages.
The research team came up with two possible explanations. The first has something with the rhythm (节奏) of tail-wagging. Rhythm is repeated sounds or movements—it’s an important part of music. Humans love music, too. So they chose to make friends with dogs that wagged their tails more. Then this tail-wagging would have been passed down to the dogs’ children.
The second explanation is that humans chose dogs for other reasons, such as tameness (温顺), and dogs with these qualities (特性) happened to wag their tails more. This would make tail-wagging a side effect of domestication (驯养).
More research is needed because no one really understands how or why wagging happens. One of the team, Andrea Ravignani, told the science. org website that there is a lot of work to be done. “We still don’t know exactly which parts of the dog brain control which features (特征) of the tail-wagging,” she said.

7 . The cost of raising a child is highest in South Korea and China, according to a new report by Beijing’s YuWa Population Research Institute.
The institute compared costs using different countries’ GDP per person. GDP per person is the total value of all the work done and things made in a country in one year, divided by the number of people who live there. And the report said the average cost of raising a child in South Korea to the age of 18 is 7.8 times the country’s GDP per person.
In China, the average cost of raising a child is about $75,000, which is more than 6. 3 times the GDP per person. It’s even more expensive to raise a child in Chinese cities, with an average cost of almost $94,000.
South Korea and China both have very low birth rates. South Korea’s is the lowest in the world — and with those costs, it might be easy to see why.
Japan also has a low birth rate, but it costs about 4.3 times the GDP per person to raise a child there. It’s 4.1 times in the US, and 2.1 times in Australia.
But it’s not only money that parents have to spend — it’s time too. And this is another reason young people are choosing not to have children, according to the institute.
For example, it said that in China, between 2010 and 2018, the amount of time parents spent helping their children with elementary school homework increased from less than four hours to almost six hours per week.

9 . ①Is the world short of sand? At first, that might sound like a strange question. After all, sand covers beaches and deserts across the world.
②In the building field alone, 40—50 billion tons of sand is used around the world every year. This is because concrete (混凝土) is usually made up of about 25% sand. Many of us don’t realize that sand is also used for things like smartphones, TV screens and other electric objects.
③Another problem is that most desert or beach sand can not be used. Desert sand is too smooth and beach sand has too much salt in it. This means that sand which is used for building is usually got from rivers. However, it has caused terrible environmental problem. As a result, many countries have stopped the use of sand in recent years.
④To try to cut the need for sand, a growing number of researchers are turning to technology and new ways. These include Dr. John Orr at Cambridge University. “We found that the plastic can replace (代替) 10% of the sand in concrete and it has the same strength (强度).” says Dr. John Orr. “That saves lots of sand and helps to cut down the plastic waste.” At the same time, other research is being done into using more objects to replace sand.
⑤To save the sand, everyone should play a part in cutting down the needs for sand besides the researchers. Here is an example of the action everyone can take. A 10% drop in the number of cars on the road means 10% fewer houses with garage (车库) that need to be built. That is millions of tons of concrete every year.
