What colors do you like, red, green or blue? Do you know that colors are widely used in our language?
For example, if a man has “a green thumb (大拇指)”, then he must be very good at gardening. When we say a person is “feeling blue”, that means he is unhappy and sad. We need to cheer him up. And did you ever tell a “white lie”? When you want to tell your friend a piece of bad news but don’t want to hurt his feelings, then you can tell him a white lie.
Colors are not only used in our language. They also affect our daily lives a lot. For example, some people are color-blind (色盲). The color-blind cannot see the difference between one color and another. For example, red, green and yellow look like gray to them. Some of them may see red as green, and others may see blue as yellow. It is quite inconvenient (不方便的) because they can’t see the correct colors of the traffic lights. So they can’t drive a car. 4 . Body language helps people know what is really going on inside someone’s head. A small movement of the mouth or nose can show much about persons’ feelings. Here are some basic movements and their meanings.
First, shrug shoulders (耸肩). This means “I don’t know” or “I don’t mind it”. If your friends shrug their shoulders when being invited to a party, it shows they are not very interested in it.
Second, keep fingers crossed (交叉的). It shows wishes for good luck. Before people take exams, they often cross their fingers in the hope of good grades. Football fans do the same thing when they wish their favorite player will score a goal.
Third, rub chin (摸下巴) . If someone rubs their chins, it often means they don’t believe what someone is saying! So if your friends make this gesture, it secretly tells you how they feel.

Zhouzhi National Nature Reserve lies in Zhouzhi County, Shanxi Province, China. The reserve mainly protects rare (稀有的) animals such as the golden monkey and their living places, the mixed forests above 1,500 meters. There are about 1,500 golden monkeys living there, making it the area with the largest number of golden monkeys in China. That’s why the reserve is known as “the hometown of golden monkeys”.
There are many interesting facts about golden monkeys. For example, they may communicate with each other in their “language”. When a mother calls “Jiajia”, she is telling her baby an enemy is probably coming. When a baby says “Ai ai”, he or she may be greeting others. When golden monkeys shout “Wu wu” or “Wo wo”, they may be happy or angry. Their habits, many of which are similar to us, are also interesting. They mainly eat plants, fruits and vegetables like people. They would also like to protect their family members or friends.
At the same time, golden monkeys are important for the forest ecosystem (生态系统), so in addition to setting up reserves to protect them, we also need to do what we can to protect them.
The hard work of a photographer in Xi’an named Zhang Qiang, truly deserves (值得) our attention and praise. Walking in the Qinling Mountains, he uses his camera to tell the story of the living conditions and ecology of golden monkeys for years. Years of experience in wildlife photography offers Zhang Qiang a clearer understanding of the relationship between humans and nature.
“I always hope that more people can see the living conditions of wild animals through the photos. I also want the world to see the efforts made by my hometown and even the whole of China for ecological protection, and let more people connect with nature through images, so that all this will become more meaningful,” Zhang Qiang said.

A spacesuit is like a small space station. It has everything astronauts need when they carry out a spacewalk. For example, China’s spacesuits have six layers (层) . There are four of them that help control the temperature and air pressure inside the suit. Spacesuits are filled with air.
Astronauts are connected to the space station with safety ropes (绳子) . There are headphones and speakers for astronauts to communicate in the spacesuit. There is also a mirror at the wrist (腕) . Astronauts can check their spacesuits by looking at it.
The first Feitian spacesuit was made in 2008. Zhai Ziyang wore it to carry out China’s first spacewalk. The spacesuits Chinese astronauts wear today are the second generation of Feitian. The first generation could only be used (被使用) five times within two years, while the second generation can be used 15 times within three years.

7 . Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They want to bring water to the deserts, so people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth is becoming deserts all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the deserts. Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth.
Some places on the earth don’t get very much rain. But they still don’t become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants don’t let the hot sun make the earth even drier. Plants don’t let the wind blow the dirt away. When a little bit of rain falls, the plants hold the water. Without plants the land can become a desert much more easily.

8 . In 1974, Chinese farmers got an amazing find in Shaanxi Province. They found a lot of clay (黏土) soldiers. These clay soldiers are 2,200 years old. But their life-like looks make people surprised. They are called terracotta soldiers (兵马俑).
Then in 2007, workers in Shandong Province got another find. Once again, it was an army of terracotta soldiers. But this time they were smaller in size.
In 246 B. C., the building of the terracotta army began. It was under the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Shi Huang is remembered by Chinese people for many things. He unified China, although it broke apart again not long after his death. He started to build the Great Wall. It took nearly 40 years and more than 700,000 workers to build his terracotta army. And there were not only soldiers in the army, but also horses!
The Qin Dynasty was followed by the Han Dynasty. The emperors also asked workers to build armies of terracotta soldiers. But the size of the clay model is much smaller and only 12 inches tall.

9 . Scientists are making an effort to find out how our feelings are affected. How you feel is decided by many things, such as your personality (性格) and the actions of others. You may be surprised to know the weather can also affect your feelings.
People often say they feel good when it’s sunny and sad when it’s cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel happy. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce vitamin D (维生素D). Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical which affects our brains and makes us happy. For example, the winter in Sweden and Norway is long and dark with little sunlight, so many people there often feel sad. To help the people in these countries feel happier, special “sunrooms” are built for people to get “sunlight” for an hour or two!
The weather can affect our feelings in other ways as well. Rain can make people angry because being wet makes people unhappy. In the same way, hot weather can make people angry because people don’t feel comfortable when feeling hot. As you can see, the weather can influence the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can affect our feelings. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we cannot change the weather.
1. Why does sunlight make us feel happy?A.Because sunlight hits our skins and we feel warm. |

A.our personality can affect our feelings | B.the weather can affect our feelings |
C.the actions of others can affect our feelings | D.music can affect our feelings |
10 . Think about your everyday life. Do you follow the same road to work every day? Do you sit in the same place in class? When you dress yourself, do you always put the same leg or arm in first? Maybe you do, because we all have routines (常规) in our lives.
Routines save much time because you do them without thinking. That’s why they are so important in the morning when your brain isn’t active. Here’s Amy talking about her morning routine.
Oh, yes. I always do the same things. I wake up at seven o’clock every morning. I listen to the news. Then I go to the loo and wash my face. I have a shower and dry my hair. Then I choose my clothes and I dress myself. I don’t eat anything for breakfast. I just have a cup of coffee. Then I go to work. Yes, it’s always the same.
Routines are very useful, but they also make you uncreative (无创造力的). So sometimes it’s a good idea to break (打破) your routines. Get out of bed on the other side. Listen to a different radio station. Take a different route to work. Eat something different for breakfast. Change your routine. You never know if it could change your life.
