3 . We live in the " computer age ". People like scientists, teachers and even students use computers to do many kinds of work. But many years ago, computers couldn’t do much. They were very big and expensive. Very few people were interested in them and knew how to use them.
Today computers are smaller and cheaper. Since they can do a lot of work, many people like to use them. Most people have them at home. Many have smaller ones so that they can take them out to work, to travel, to have meetings and to give talks.
Computers become very important because they can work faster than men and make fewer mistakes. Computers can help people do a lot of work. Writers now use computers to write. Teachers use them to help teaching. Scientists use them to do research and children use them to play games. Computers can also remember what you put into them. Computers are very useful and helpful. They are our good friends.

(3)也许纳米技术对医学将有最大的影响。Imagine nanobots in medicine. Thousands or even millions of tiny machines can be sent into the human body with specific tasks. For example, (4)they can be designed to find and destroy cancer cells or viruses(病毒). Other machines may stay in the human body forever to help organs(器官)that are not working properly.
When could all of these happen? Scientists predict that most of these are possible in the next 30 years. Thousands of scientists around the world are working on these micro-machines. Nanotechnology is just around the corner.

The robot fish are about 1.5 metres long. There will be a detector (探测器) in each fish’s
body. It can find the pollution in the water, and then the robot fish will eat part of it.
Unlike other robots, the robot fish don’t need to be operated (操作) by people far away. The robots all have a big battery (电池) that can last for about eight hours. They can “swim” in the sea freely and send back information to people on the beach. After their batteries run down, they will go back to the beach by themselves.
There are five robot fish altogether. Each costs about 29,000 dollars. They are part of a three-year project by the joint effort of the engineering company BMT Group and University of Essex in England.

This is a chat between a human “user” and a computer. The computer was designed to be as human as possible. It was taught to talk to humans. It has also learnt from what people have said to it. This has helped it to become even more human.
The technology that makes George talk is called Jabberwacky. This technology recently won the Loebner Prize. The Loebner Prize is a competition to find the most realistic artificial intelligence (人工智能). The judges had to talk to the computer. They typed questions to it. The computer answered.
Jabberwacky’s design team say it will be a long time before the programme is very realistic.
It was first created in 1982. It has been getting better every year since then. Each time it chats to a human, the list of things to say gets bigger. This means the computer has more things to say when you talk to it.
It is hoped that a computer like this will replace humans in call centres. When the programme is more realistic, this will be possible.

You will go to the kitchen when you are hungry. You will give orders to the kitchen robot. The robot will prepare the food for you in a few minutes. Then it will send it to you.
In the kitchen you will find a special food machine. The food machine will tell you what your body needs. It will help you eat healthily. The food machine will connect with the kitchen robot. The robot can get signals(信号) and messages from the food machine.
After having a meal, you can go to your home office. You will work at home and you don’t need to go out to work any more.
You will have a special information screen. You can get any information on the screen. When you receive a message from a friend in America, your information screen will be turned on automatically(自动地). Your friend’s face appears on the screen. Today more and more families own computers. Parents buy computers for their children. They hope that computers can help them to improve their studies at school. But many of their children use computers to play games and watch videos. For most students, computers can not help them to study better but make them fall behind. So computers are locked in boxes by parents.
In some other countries, even some scientists also hate computers. They say computers let millions of people lose their jobs or bring them a lot of trouble. Will computers really bring trouble to people or can they bring people happiness? It will be decided by people themselves!

9 . Thumbs Down to Texting (屈指发短信)
Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?
Text messaging or “texting” is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling in our thumbs. Our thumbs were not made for pushing small buttons, over and over . Scientists call this problem RSI. We spoke to a doctor called Harriet Wilson, who treats many sick people with RSI. She says we need to see how much time we are spending in typing text messages. If we are spending more than 10-15 minutes at once, we could have problems in the future.
As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller with buttons closer together. Texting with a smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can cause the same problem. So more and more people could find themselves with RSI. Among them, most are university students and teenagers, as they do not know the risks of spending so much time using computer, video games and mobile phones. If we don't do something about this, too many young people could grow up in terrible pain.
