While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more for some primary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital (数码的) teacher. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will just appears on the computer or smart phone screen.

Will has a look of a man in the 30s and he acts just like a human. The digital teacher now teaches “Be sustainable (可持续的) with energy”, a free programme for Auckland primary schools. This programme used to be taught by humans. Its purpose is to educate kids about energy use and the different forms of renewable energy. Just like the human teachers, Will can not only answer the kids’ questions, but also react (回应) to their facial expressions. For example, if a student smiles at Will, he will smile back.

The inventor of Will says using a digital human like Will is a great way to send new information to people.

Will has been a great success. He easily captures (吸引) students’ attention and the kids love him. However, no matter how popular Will becomes, he will be unlikely to replace human teachers. For one, Will won’t have as much knowledge as human teachers. And more importantly, there are always unexpected situations in class, and even the smartest digital human won’t know how to deal with them. However, the digital teacher could come in handy as a private teacher, providing kids with one-to-one help on some subjects or topics.

Here are some important rules for you to become a good student at school.

◆ Go to school on time

As a student, going to school on time is very important. If you are late, you will not start your lesson at the same time with your classmates. In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught to walk, run, climb or ride a bicycle. They compare their performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them himself. We do it all for him. We thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him work out with the help of other children if he wants it.

If it is a matter in math or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such daily work? Our job should be to help the children when they tell us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must learn, how to measure(估量) their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.

Let them get on with this job in their ways. School teachers can offer help if they ask for it. Some parents and teachers are worried that the children might fail to learn something that they will need to get in the world. Don’t worry! If it is important, they will go out into the world and learn it.

8 . Teenagers will grow up some day, leaving their parents and facing the challenges in life alone, so they should learn basic life skills and form good working habits.

The government has been trying to pay attention to the importance of hardworking spirit education (劳动教育). But this has been overlooked in recent years. Many teens do not value the importance of working hard. There is a teenage girl named Nancy. She never helps out around the house. Once her mother was on vacation for a week, leaving her alone at home. When her mother came home from vacation, she could not find a clean dish or a clean shirt.

Schools play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard. Primary and middle schools should provide students with hardworking spirit courses every week. To our joy, some schools have provided each class with a piece of field to plant their favorite vegetables. For example, No. 38 Middle School in Hefei, set up a 500 square-meter farm on an open platform（露天平台）of their teaching building. Each class are asked to grow and pick vegetables there.

Parents should also encourage children to learn how to do chores at home. Teens should master one or two life skills every year. These skills can include cooking, washing their own clothes and tidying their rooms. The basic skills may help teens to solve the problems they will meet some day.
