5 . ①China`s giant pandas are one of the most popular animals in the world. Many people love their cute look. But do you know that China in fact has two different kinds of giant pandas?
②Before the 1960s, many people believed that giant pandas only lived in the mountains in Sichuan. But in the 1960s, an expert found that there were also wild pandas living in the Qinling mountains in Shaanxi. The two groups of giant pandas are not just from different places, but are two subspecies (亚种) of giant pandas. They are different in many ways.
③Research shows that the pandas from Sichuan have bigger and longer heads. They are more similar to bears (熊) in their look. Those from Shaanxi have rounder heads with shorter noses. They look more like cats. While the Sichuan pandas’ coat (皮毛) is black and white, the Shaanxi ones can have dark brown hair.
④Qizai, the world`s only brown-and-white panda in captivity (圈养), lives in Shaanxi Province now. People found him in the Qinling mountains when he was just two months old. He is now a star, and many tourists go to see him every year. For years, Chinese panda scientists have tried to find out what gives him his special coat. Can you take a guess?

②At the age of 15, Lhamo found three baby red deer while farming. She waited all day without seeing their parents, so she decided to take them home. Her family was not rich, but Lhamo tried her best to feed and take care of them. To keep them warm, Lhamo even let them sleep in her room on winter nights.
③The three red deer grew healthily under Lhamo`s good care. Two years later, Lhamo set them free to the wild. She said, “I didn`t want to leave them, but I knew that nature was their home.” To Lhamo’s surprise, the three red deer later returned to visit her often.
④The story of Lhamo and the red deer touched many people, and it even reached to the government. They set up a pasture for the red deer and invited Lhamo to work there. Lhamo accepted the offer. As the pasture later became a national nature reserve, Lhamo still worked there until she retired.

She stood still and was at a loss (不知所措). The restaurant manager (经理) was nice. She comforted Yang, saying, “It doesn`t matter. We can give you another meal for free.”
Everyone thought that this small episode (插曲) would end like that. But, when Yang left after eating, the waiter found 75 yuan and a note on the table. The note said, “I`m sorry that the money might not be enough to make up (弥补) for your loss (损失), but that`s all I have. Thank you for your kindness.” The manager was deeply touched after reading the note. The money was probably a week’s worth of pocket money for the girl.
The manager posted this on social media (媒体) and called on a search for this young girl. Many newspapers re-posted it and joined the search. Finally, Yang was found after her teacher heard about the story. However, Yang thought it was not a big deal. “I have accepted other people’s help and should make up for their kindness,” she said.

8 .
Dear Alex,
I found that the English we learn in our classes is sometimes not idiomatic (地道的) in real life. What can we do to change the situation?
Carol
Hi Carol,
Having lived in China for some time, I’ve definitely (肯定地) come across some words that Chinese English speakers use, but aren’t used by native speakers (说母语的人) that often. One example is the word “seldom (很少)”. Although most native English speakers know the meaning of the word, it isn’t really used in spoken English. We are more likely to (可能) say “rarely” or “don`t really”. I think you have to accept that this is a constant (经常的) feature of language learning. When I study Chinese, one of the first phrases I am taught is “ni hao ma (你好吗)”, which isn’t really used naturally in China.
In my experience, I think the Chinese education system (体系) does quite a good job at teaching English, so definitely keep paying attention in class and don’t dismiss (摒除) what you are being taught. However, my advice would be to watch TV shows and movies as well as read books to get a good feel for the language. Try to think about the different ways of writing and speaking in different situations, especially the different words that are being used.
Alex
