8 . A person comes to you and says “hi”. But you have no idea who he or she is. If you often meet this, you may have face blindness (脸盲).
A new study shows that face blindness may be more common than we think. One in 33 people (3.08%) may have it. Some have serious problems. They cannot even recognize friends or families. They spend a long time remembering faces.
In the past, people didn’t have lots of studies about this. The studies on face blindness only began in the 1990s. Today, more scientists are working to tell more people about face blindness and its effects (影响) on our life. According to Joseph DeGutis, a writer of the study, people with it may have a bad social life. They have a hard time making friends and are even afraid to make friends.
What should we do? Don’t worry about the face blindness. Accept your face blindness and tell yourself: this doesn’t mean you don’t care about others. You’ve just got a small problem. Tell others when you first meet them that you may not be able to recognize them next time, so they don’t think you’re “blanking (冷落)” them. Try to use other ways to remember people, such as their voices.

9 . In a restaurant, a 10-month-old baby choked (窒息) on a piece of pancake. His parents hit him on the back first. However, nothing was working.
His parents quickly realized how serious it was. They began calling for help. Suddenly, a man said he knew what to do. But instead of running to the baby, he ran to his car to get a machine called LifeVac. “The moment (时刻) was scary for me as well. The baby looked really bad. The mother trusted me, like the last hope.” he said.
LifeVac is an airway-clearing (气道清除) machine. The man kept the machine in his car for almost five years and never needed it before. He used it to try to get the pancake out of the baby’s mouth. Luckily, after several tries, he made it. And he saved a life that day.
