4 . Scientists have found that the qualities, shared by left handed people, could have something to do with their genes (基因). The findings, published in the magazine Nature Communications, found rare variants (罕见变异) of a gene called TUBB4B were happening more often in left-handed people. The scientists studied the genetic data of 350,000 adults from Britain. Among them about 11 percent were left-handed people. They found TUBB4B variants were in less than 1 percent of people, but they may appear in the left-handed 2.7 times more than in the right-handed. The scientists said TUBB4B could lead to someone using either the left or the right side of their brains for learning language. Those who mostly use the left side of the brain when learning language tend to (倾向于) write with their right hand, but those who mostly use the right side of their brain become left-handed. Around 90 percent of people are right-handed, and 10 percent are left-handed.
The number of left-handed people is different across the world. There are fewer left-handed people in Africa, Asia and the Middle East than in Europe and North America, Prof Francks said.
Over the centuries, many cultures have looked down upon (看不起) the left-handed and tried to force them to become right-handed. In English, the word “right” also means “correct” or “proper”. The word “sinister (邪恶的)” came from a Latin word meaning “on the left side”. In many countries like Arab countries, naturally left-handed kids are still made to use their right hands to write and draw, while kids in Europe, North America and Australia are no longer made to do so.

5 . Recently, a girl with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症) acted out Sichuan Opera and changed her face to surprise the whole network. The 19-year-old girl is called Yin Qiuhua, from Nanchong, Sichuan. She was found to have Down syndrome at 6 months old. At the age of 1, she could not sit still; by the age of 7, she could not walk or eat… Other children can learn some skills quickly, but Qiuhua has to spend a long time learning them. However, Qiuhua’s mother took good care of her. Now Qiuhua can cook simple meals and wash clothes. Her mother also wanted Qiuhua to learn a skill to support herself.
Then in 2021, by chance, they met Lin Chun, a Sichuan Opera teacher. Lin was touched by this special child. So she decided to teach Qiuhua face-changing skill in Sichuan Opera. Because Qiuhua understands slowly and can’t communicate in words, her mother studied with her during the day. After returning home, she taught Qiuhua little by little. Every morning at 6 o’clock Qiuhua began to practice basic skills, opening shoulders, walking steps... A practice takes a few hours.
Although the learning was full of difficulties and challenges, Qiuhua never gave up. After a year and a half of training, Qiuhua acted out in public for the first time. It was successful. Now, Qiuhua can change eight Sichuan Opera faces in a row (连续). Her mother is very pleased and Ms Lin is very proud.

6 . April 22 is Earth Day. Everyone on Earth should care about and protect the Earth! The Earth has warmed by about 1°F (氏度) over the past 100 years, but why and how? Well, scientists are not quite sure. Maybe the Earth gets warmer and warmer on its own. But many scientists say that people are doing many things to make the Earth warmer. First, greenhouse effect (温室效应) is a very important reason for the change of the Earth. People give out too much energy (热能) into the air every year. It makes the Earth warmer. The weather change is another important reason. Sometimes it becomes too hot and sometimes too cold. Sometimes there is too much rain and sometimes too little. The change of the weather makes the Earth warmer. And the Earth getting warmer changes the weather, too. When the Earth becomes warmer, there may be more rain and a rise in sea level. On some islands, people have to move to higher places because the sea is rising. Scientists say that the seas can rise by nearly one metre by 2100. So we can do many things to protect and save the Earth. For example, we can use fridges less. We can tell more people about protecting the Earth.
