2 . ChatGPT is back in the headlines. Open AI, the company behind the popular chatbot has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4.
On March 14, GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than the previous GPT-3.5. One of its best new features is that it can understand pictures. For example, if you show a picture of a phone using the wrong charger, GPT-4 can tell why the picture looks strange or funny.
But GPT-4’s developments don’t stop there. The new language model can code classic games like Tetris (俄罗斯方块) in a matter of minutes, and produce the code and layout (布局) for a website based on a handmade drawing. It can also change the tone and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4 is much better than the older GPT at passing tests, which may worry teachers. According to CNN, GPT-4 did really well on a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers. But GPT-3.5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.
GPT-4 will also see greater use as a tool to power other apps and services. For example, the language learning app Duolingo plans to use GPT-4 in their upcoming version, Duolingo Max. Users can learn language by talking with AI. Another app, Be My Eyes, will have a digital assistant to help blind people better understand the world around them. The government of Iceland also plans to use GPT-4 to protect the Icelandic language.
There are still problems with the new language model, however. GPT-4 struggles to get completely correct answers, especially with newer information after September 2021. GPT-4 also sometimes “hallucinates”, meaning that it will insist that wrong information is true.

5 . “Have you ever heard that it’s impossible to fold a piece of paper more than seven times? Actually, it is just a popular myth.
The myth refers to folding a piece of paper in half many times in any direction. The paper is folded in half. Try it for yourself with a piece of notebook paper. ________ But when you make the fifth and sixth folds, you’ll notice that it’s increasingly hard to fold the paper. Why does it happen? Because the number of the layers (层) of paper doubles with each fold. For example, after the sixth fold, you’re left with 64 layers of paper. If you have strong hands, you may be able to make that seventh fold. If you start with a piece of paper that is 0.01 centimeters thick, it’ll be as thick as a notebook after seven folds. And it would seem impossible to make more folds. At this point, you may be thinking that the paper-folding myth doesn’t sound much like a myth.
However, in 2002, a high school student named Britney Gallivan proved the idea wrong. Britney successfully folded a 1.20-meter-long roll of toilet paper 12 times (note that she used single-direction folding). She also developed a math rule. This is convenient. It allows you to find out the maximum (最大的) number of possible folds based on paper thickness, paper length, and direction of folding.
Since Britney’s success, many people have managed to fold a single piece of paper more than 7 times. Students even folded a piece of toilet paper a total of thirteen times. The toilet paper they used was about 4,000 meters long!
1. How thick is the notebook mentioned in the second paragraph?A.0.01 centimeters. | B.0.07 centimeters. | C.0.64 centimeters. | D.1.28 centimeters. |
A.The first few folds are easy. | B.It’s folded in the same direction. |
C.It’s too thick to fold it. | D.A paper can be used many times. |

6 . Fiona was a very popular girl at school. She was clever and fun, and got on well with everyone. It was no accident that Fiona was so popular. From an early age she had made an effort to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party, and from time to time she would give presents to everybody. She felt very lucky; no other student had so many friends at school.
But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, in class everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. However, when all the presents had been made and shared out among classmates, Fiona was the only one who had not received a present! She spent hours crying. How could it be possible? Everyone came and tried to console (安慰) her for a while. But each one only stayed for a short time before leaving.
When she got home that night, Fiona asked her mother where she could find true friends. “Fiona, my dear,” answered her mother. “You’re a lovely girl, but you can’t be a close friend to everybody. You cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words.”
Hearing this, Fiona thought about her mother. Her mother was always ready to help her, and she bore all of Fiona’s dislikes and problems, and she always forgave (原谅) her, and she loved her a lot... That was what makes friends! Fiona smiled from ear to ear, realizing that she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.
根据短文内容判断正、误。(正确的写A,错误的写B)1. From an early age Fiona tried her best to be kind and friendly to everyone.
2. Fiona felt very lucky because she thought she had more friends than the others at school.
3. Besides Fiona, everyone in the class received presents on National Friendship Day.
4. Fiona’s mother told her to make friends not with money but with good words.
5. From her mother’s words, Fiona realized she should give her mother more love.
Chinese scientists found a whale fall (鲸落) for the first time in the South China Sea during a deep-sea expedition (考察) carried out by oceanic research vessel (船) Tansuo-1.
It’s sad to learn that a whale has died in the ocean. However, that’s not the end for the whale. It has a lot to give to other sea animals after death. When a whale dies, it quickly sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor. There, the whale body provides food for deep-sea animals, which are often hungry for food. The remains can last for lots of years and create an ecosystem (生态系统) called a whale fall-an “oasis (绿洲)” of life in the deep sea.
The whale fall ecosystem can exist in the deep ocean because great pressure and cold temperatures there prevent the body from decomposing (腐烂) too quickly. But the depth also makes it hard for scientists to discover them. There are less than 50 known whale falls in the world.
The whale body in the South China Sea is about three meters long. Scientists have found several species of shrimp (虾) and fish near the whale body. Some fish have started to eat the whale’s tail. The whale fall might be quite recent and needs long-term observation (观测), according to Xie Wei, a scientist who took part in the expedition.
By studying the whale fall, scientists can better understand how marine (海洋的) ecosystems support life and how to protect biodiversity (生物多样性) resources in the deep sea.
1. A whale fall is called an “oasis” because it provides food for deep-sea animals.2. It’s hard to find whale falls because of low temperature.
3. The whale fall in the South China Sea may have formed recently.
4. The passage is mainly about the death of whale.

Students may want to feed street cats in school, but they may not know where the cats are. Now, at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), students can use their phones to find school cats and get to know them.
To give school cats a better life, students of the university made a WeChat mini-program (小程序)—Beiwai Cats. On it, every cat in the university has an “ID card”. The cards show the cats photos and also have stories about them. Cat lovers can also adopt (收养) school cats on the mini-program.
Zhou Hengxiao, 20, helped make the mini-program. He is a member of the BFSU Love Cats Group. He says it is useful for both the students and the cats. Through the mini-program, students can learn more about the cats.
The group is also active on Weibo, Bilibili and Xiaohongshu. “We share the culture of our university through the cats. When we make money from these platforms (平台), we will use it to feed the cats and help with their illnesses,” he says.
The group hopes to add more cats near the university to Beiwai Cats. “Some people think it’s a little dangerous for students to feed the cats, but we just want to do our best to give every small life a home,” says Zhou. “Students can learn how to take care of others, too.”
1. What do the “ID cards” show about cats?2. Why does Zhou Hengxiao think the mini-program is useful?
3. What will the students use the money from the platforms to do?
4. What does the group hope to do in the future?
5. Do you think it is good, for the students to feed the cats? Why?
