3 . There is always a discussion about whether you should get your kids to do chores (家务) around the house or not. However, it really has so many benefits (益处) to children that I find it hard to see why you wouldn’t get them to do a few regular chores.

The most important reason is that getting children to do chores gives them a lot of life skills. They need to understand how to clean, how to cook, how to shop, etc. However, students can’t learn the life skills fully from schools, so it’s necessary for parents to teach the children to do chores.

Children like to feel proud about their achievements. Helping around the house can really help to give them a sense of pride, and giving them praise for helping will make them want to do more. They will feel happy to be able to help around the house, not just a bystander (旁观者).

Giving your children a specific job or a specific area in the house to look after will help them learn how to be responsible (负责任的) in later life. They will see the benefit of keeping things organized and clean, and tidy—and also appreciate more that you do for them when they grow up.

Planning is a life skill that can be got from helping around the house. As children get older, you can start to teach them how to understand the need of themselves and others and make plans. For example, if they help with the washing, then let them make sure that they do it in time. They may start to plan ahead.

4 . What’s Anti-Bullying Day (反霸凌日)?

Anti-Bullying Day is a special day. On this day, people talk about bullying and what we can do to stop it. A lot of children take part in activities about anti-bullying at school and online. And they can learn about what bullying means and what they can do if they see it happening.

When is Anti-Bullying Day?

The date of Anti-Bullying Day is different in different countries. In many places, it’s on 4th May. In the UK, Anti-Bullying Week takes place every November.

What exactly is bullying?

Bullying is when someone makes you feel bad and hurts you again and again. You may easily lose confidence. You may lose trust of everyone around you or even get sick. That’s bullying. Bullying can be with words like saying mean (刻薄的) things. It can be physical (身体上的) like hitting, pushing or taking someone’s things. Leaving someone out of a group or ignoring (忽视) them again and again is also bullying.

How can we stand up against bullying?

If someone is bullying you, you should tell a friend or a classmate what’s happening and ask them to help; or talk to your parents, a teacher or another adult who you trust.

If you see someone else being bullied, never join in with the bullying or laugh at it. That will make it worse. Instead, you should be an “upstander”—help and support the person who is being bullied. Tell a trusted adult about the bullying. If we all stand up against bullying, we can make it stop.

6 . Once upon a time, there were no donkeys in the area of Qian. Later, a man transported one from somewhere else, but he found it was useless. So he left the donkey at the foot of a mountain and walked away.

A tiger in the mountain had never seen a donkey before. He thought this huge monster was a divine (神圣的) animal and was really scared. So the tiger hid himself in the woods and watched the donkey quietly. After a while, seeing the donkey stand there without moving, the tiger came out of the woods slowly, and reached it carefully, but he couldn’t know what kind of monster it was.

One day, while the tiger was watching, the donkey suddenly gave a loud cry, which scared the tiger so much that he ran away quickly. Yet when turning his head, he discovered that the donkey was still at the same place, without moving.

The tiger slowly reached the donkey again. He slowly got used to its cries and felt it wasn’t terrible at all. The tiger came nearer and nearer, and even tried to tease (逗弄) the donkey with his paws.
