1 . Raina Chareese Luke is 19 years old. She likes traditional Chinese clothing, especially the Qipao and Hanfu very much.
Luke is an international exchange (交换) student from Georgia, U.S. She is in a six-month Chinese language program at Tianjin University now. She joined the program last September (2023). However, her interest in Chinese language and culture began in her second year of middle school.
Luke started learning Chinese as her second foreign language, but back then only by chance. “I knew nothing about the country or the language I was about to learn,” she said. But she completely changed her mind after the first class. “Rather than asking us to learn new words or sentences, the Chinese teacher played a Chinese song Tian Mimi for us,” Luke said. She was attracted to the words of the song, and she became interested in the Chinese language.
From then on, Luke watched Chinese movies and soap operas in her free time. She also did a part-time job at a Chinese restaurant where she would practice her Chinese language skills with others. “The more I learn about China, the more interested I am in the Chinese culture,” Luke said. She finally made up her mind to come to study in China.

Last term, some firefighters came to our school and talked to us about something important: fire safety!
The firefighters told us all about how fires start and what we can do to stop them. They showed us the cool clothes and hats that firefighters wear, and they even let us try them on! We looked just like real firefighters!
However, the most important thing they wanted us to remember was what we must do in the middle of a fire. They told us to always stay low to the ground and crawl (爬行) to the nearest door. They also showed us how to use a fire extinguisher (灭火器) and call for help.
At the end of the visit, the firefighters gave us a test to see how much we learned. I was so proud of myself because I got all the answers right!
Several weeks later, we had a fire drill (消防演习) at school. The alarm went off, and we had to leave our classroom quickly. At first, I felt a little nervous, but I remembered everything the firefighters taught us. I stayed low to the ground, crawled to the door, and got outside. After the drill, our teacher told us that all the safety rules we learned are there to protect us and that we must take them seriously.
Now, whenever I hear the sound of a fire alarm, instead of being nervous, I feel prepared. To me, fire safety is not just a school lesson for a young student. Instead, it’s a lifelong skill that will always keep me safe.

Today is Friday. As soon as school was over, I hurried home. In the morning, my father told me he was going to bring me a present. I was excited all day!
Finally, Father came home. He handed me a large piece of paper with all kinds of shapes and lines in different colors. Father told me that it was a map of China. I looked at it carefully, and noticed a long blue line. Father told me it was The Yellow River.
The Yellow River! I had heard this name, but never understand what it meant.
Father added, “the Yellow River is China’s second biggest river. It is one of China’s most important rivers, and is known as China’s ‘Mother River’.”
“Could you tell me why it is called a ‘Mother River’?” I asked.
“A long, long time ago, our ancestors (祖先) managed to live in the area along the Yellow River and the Chinese nation developed and took shape. And so, we call the Yellow River the ‘Mother River’ of China.”
I listened to this wide-eyed. Thanks to the Yellow River, the Chinese nation was born and gradually developed, so far it has become a world power. As I thought of this, I became even more moved.
Looking at the expression on my face, Father seemed to be glad. He said, “I gave you this map of China in the hope that you would know your homeland better. There are many places in China you have never been to. And as well as the country you see today, there are also its origin (起源) and history. That’s even more important for us.”
I nodded, and locked Father’s words deep in my heart.

Legend has it that a long time ago, before Longmen was dug open, the Yi River was blocked by Longmen Mountain, and a large lake was in the other side of the mountain.
The carp (鲤鱼) who lived in the Yellow River wanted to pay a visit after knowing that Longmen was beautiful.
The big red carp volunteered and said,“I’ll jump first, and give it a try.”
Like a speedy arrow (箭) from a bow, the carp used all its strength, swimming from half a mile away, and then jumped high into the sky, trying to get away from the clouds of fire chasing (追赶) from behind.
The other carp in the river were so frightened that they did not dare (不敢) to take this risk again.
