Madison Checketts has loved the beach for as long as she can remember. But every time on her family vacation, she could easily notice plastic bottles lying on the sand. After learning more about plastic pollution, she created an edible (可食用的) water bottle called Eco-Hero.
She started working on the project in October, 2021. In her early project, when Madison asked herself what she could do to make the world a better place, she thought about reducing plastic pollution. Single-use plastic products like water bottles are used and thrown away. After that, plastic water bottles often end up in the sea. Plastic pollution is a main danger to the sea and the wildlife in it.
The Eco-Hero holds about three-quarters of a cup of water and costs about $1.20 to make one. People cut a hole with their teeth in the gelatinous membrane (胶质膜) and drink the water. And then, either eat the membrane or throw it away. “It took many tries to get the membrane strong enough not to break in my hands,” Madison says.
As Madison thinks about the future of the Eco-Hero, she says she wants to run more tests to make the bottle stronger and bigger. She hopes the Eco-Hero encourages people to think and understand that everyone can make the world a better place. Let’s start doing something for the environment.
