1 . Recently I had a trip to Sydney with my parents. We visited the Wildlife Park.

The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals. Some are native (当地的) to Australia and can only be found there. There are more than 500 animals there, including kangaroos (袋鼠), koalas and crocodiles (鳄). They are kept in their natural environment. I like the Wildlife Park better than a zoo. In zoos, most of the animals are in cages (笼子).

We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We could touch and feed them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there, too. They looked very cuddly Although we couldn’t carry koalas, I could take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir (纪念物) of my holiday in Sydney.

The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater (淡水) and saltwater crocodiles (鳄鱼). Some of them are very big and scary (吓人的) with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.

There was also a bird show. The keepers showed us different species (种类) of birds. I saw an old parrot (鹦鹉). It could “talk” and made a great impression on me.

I enjoyed the trip very much. There was so much to see.

Do you feel sad during the winter months? If so, you might have seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

SAD usually starts in autumn or winter and ends in spring or early summer. As the weather gets colder, you feel more tired, sleepy and even hopeless. When spring returns, you may become well again.

However, we still don’t know the exact reason of SAD. Some scientists think that hormone changes can cause that. During winter, it stays dark outside for much of the day. That causes the brain to make more melatonin (褪黑素). The melatonin makes you feel sleepy and less excited.

Getting more sunlight (日光) is the best way to deal with SAD. Doctors say people should spend at least some time outside every day during the winter. But if you feel deeply unhappy, you should go to a doctor.

10 .

In the UK, we’re mad about hats. Just think of the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland. There’s nothing he loves more than drinking tea and wearing hats. There’s also the wartime British prime minister, Winston Churchill, who famously wore the homburg hat I have always been a big fan of wearing hats. My favorite is the pork pie hat.

In my country, some hats are popular for everyday wear while others are just for events. At the yearly British horse racing event, women usually wear hats with flowers and bright colors while the men wear bowler hats

Rich men in England have liked to wear bowler hats since Victorian times, said the Britain Magazine. This showed they were rich gentlemen. In the 20th century, the bowler hat was famously worn by the British actor and comedian, Charlie Chaplin.

Another popular British hat is the flat cap (鸭舌帽). The working class wore flat caps because they were light and suitable while doing physical work. By the 19th century, the flat cap had become a symbol of working-class culture. Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, the orphan child, famously wears a flat cap.

While bowler and homburg hats have gone out of fashion except at the fanciest events, the flat cap is still popular today and it’s a hat I often wear. My grandpa and my dad would always wear these caps and I guess I’ve continued the traditional culture.

1. What hat is the author’s favorite?

2. Do English people like to wear hats at the yearly British horse racing event?

3. Which British actor wore a bowler hat in the 20th century?

4. Why did working-class people like wearing flat caps?
