文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要阐述了不守时的人给其他人和自己造成的伤害。不守时的人失去了名誉和做事情的最佳时机,同时也失去了别人的信任。

1 . A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment.

The unpunctual man, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time. He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things. In fact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is for ever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable asset as well as others’. The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or return calls or keep appointments promptly. But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it. He knows that he can not get through huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every piece of work when it has to be attended to.

Failure to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is a sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present.

Unpunctuality, moreover, is very harmful when it comes to doing one’s duty, whether public or private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men.

A.He always does a thing when it should be done.
B.He is always very busy.
C.He always does a thing at the wrong time.
D.He always keeps the appointments.
2. Why is unpunctuality very harmful?
A.Because it makes a man lose many chances of doing important affairs.
B.Because it makes a man lose friends.
C.Because it makes a man work quickly.
D.Because it makes a man be more respected by others.
3. According to the passage, which is right?
A.The punctual person has no much work to do.
B.The unpunctual person is very rich.
C.The unpunctual person is often respected by his friends.
D.The unpunctual person loses what can’t be regained again.
4. According to the passage, what are good manners when you are invited to a party?
A.Arriving at the appointed time.B.Arriving before all other guests.
C.Arriving after all other guests.D.Keeping all other guests waiting.
5. Why is a person always unpunctual?
A.He is too busy.B.He has too much work to do.
C.He does care much about time.D.He doesn’t manage his time properly.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了西方的就餐习俗。

4 . When having a meal, a European usually holds the knife in the right hand, and the fork in the left. He uses the knife and fork with his both hands. He keeps his knife and fork in his hands until he finishes eating.

But an American, on the opposite, may use just one hand whenever possible and keep the other hand on his lap. He uses the fork in his right hand to pick up fried potatoes. When he has to cut his meat, he changes his fork to the left hand and cuts it. Then he puts down the knife and changes his fork to his right hand to pick up the sliced meat. Then, perhaps, he will suddenly think of his coffee or orange. So he has to put down his fork in order to drink his coffee or orange. Now you can see, an American is busy all the time at the dinner table. By the way, Europeans usually have their coffee after meals, but many Americans prefer to have coffee during the meal.

If you are present at a formal dinner, you might be confused to find so many forks, knives and spoons put before you. You might be at a loss to know what to do with them. Don’t worry. The rule is simple. You just use them in the order in which they lie, beginning from outside towards the plate. The small fork on the outside on the left is for salad. The spoon on the outside on the right is for soup. There is another little knife, called a butter spreader, on a bread-and-butter plate on the left. As the bread is passed, each guest helps himself and puts his pieces on the small plate. Next to the soup there will probably be the blunt(钝的) knife for fish, which is smaller and blunter than other knives.

1. When do Europeans usually drink their coffee?
A.Before meals.
B.After meals.
C.While they are having their meals.
D.They never drink coffee when they eat.
2. The right way to use the forks, knives and spoons is ________.
A.to use whichever you like when necessary
B.to use them from the outside to the inside
C.to use them from the inside to the outside
D.to use them from the middle to both sides
3. The butter spreader is________.
A.a forkB.a spoonC.a knifeD.a plate
4. The spoon on the outside on the right is for________.
A.soupB.saladC.butterD.chicken
5. The best title for this passage is________.
A.Eating Habit in America
B.Eating Habit in Europe

D.Dining Customs of the West

5 . Wind power is a very clean source of energy. This is how wind power works. Wind makes windmills spin(旋转). When the windmills spin, they make electricity. Then we can use the electricity.

A lot of people think that wind power is new, but that’s not true. For thousands of years, people have used wind to sail boats and move water. We still do those things today, but these days we mostly use wind power to make electricity.

Wind power is a very popular source of energy. Most people think that we should use it more and more. First of all, it’s clean. Windmills don’t pollute the environment at all. Second, we can use wind power forever. After all, we will always have wind. Also, wind power is cheap, and it’s getting even cheaper.

A lot of people don’t understand wind power very well. They believe that there are problems with wind power, but many of those problems are not real. For example, some people say that windmills are dangerous for birds. They used to be true, but it isn’t true anymore. Old windmills killed birds because they spun very fast. New windmills spin slowly, and they aren’t dangerous for birds.

However, there are real problems with windmills. One problem is that many people think windmills are very ugly. This is a problem for people, because windmills are often in very pretty areas. Also, wind doesn’t blow all the time, so we can’t use wind power all the time. Finally, windmills are noisy.

Wind power is becoming more and more common. Right now, more than 80 countries use wind power. About 2.5 percent of the world’s power comes from the wind. For some countries, that number is a lot higher. Wind power gives Denmark more than 25 percent of its electricity.

1. Why DON’T new windmills kill birds? Because ________.
A.birds don’t fly near themB.they are shorter than old windmills
C.they spin slowlyD.new windmills don’t spin
2. When did people start using wind power?
A.Over 1,000 years ago.B.About 500 years ago.
C.About 80 years ago.D.About 25 years ago.
3. ________, so we CAN’T use wind power all the time.
A.We can’t use windmills at night
B.Windmills break all the time
C.Wind doesn’t blow all the time
D.Windmills are too expensive to use all the time
4. What does the passage say about wind power?
A.Most people don’t like it.B.Denmark doesn’t use it.
C.It’s getting more expensive.D.It’s getting cheaper.
5. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Dangerous BirdsB.Popular and Clean Wind Power
C.Cheap and Clean EnergyD.Expensive Windmills

6 . In choosing a friend, one should be very careful.   A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fairweather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities(品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).

Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how the other is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person' s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.

At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults(过错) in others.   He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.

Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.

There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other.   A good friend has a good sense of humor(幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I've found a friend!

7 . We asked high school counselors(指导教师) for their best advice on what high school seniors should do over the summer to ensure a successful freshman year on campus. Let’s see what experts say.

Elizabeth Hammer, chair of guidance at General Douglas MacArthur High School

Many students find their roommates through school-specific social media groups instead of being randomly assigned by their college, so join the school’s freshman class Facebook group and find yourself some like-minded roommates.

Antoinette Shervington, school counselor at Brentwood High school

Colleges may have offered another student a scholarship, but that student has decided not to attend, freeing up that money. “Reintroduce” yourself to the admissions or the financial aid office and ask if any scholarships have reopened.

Martha Tuthill, guidance counselor at Shelter Island School

Many colleges automatically include health insurance as part of the cost, but if you have insurance you can have that waived (免除). Companies also offer optional tuition( 学费) insurance, which protects a percentage of a term’s tuition cost if a student has to drop out for a medical reason.

8 . All over the world the need for more laptops and computers increases each year. Networks have been part of our life. Probably everyone with a portable device(移动设备)has once logged on to a public WiFi network without paying for it while they are having a coffee, on a train, in a shopping mall or at a hotel. However, is this kind of public WiFi network safe?

Some networks are better protected than others because encryption(加密) methods are used. Therefore, they are safer than others. But a survey in 2015 showed that more than 950 million records were not protected, including addresses, emails, birth dates, phone numbers, passwords and so on. These open WiFi networks are really not safe, because it is very easy for hackers(黑客)to break into the operating system and get people's private information.

Most smartphones and laptops, by themselves, search and connect to WiFi networks. They usually prefer a network with a connection that has been used before. Hackers' devices are able to record these searches and look like the trusted WiFi networks. When these smartphones and laptops log on to the networks which are not real, hackers can easily steal their private information.

So next time, when we want to use our laptops or our smartphones in public places which offer free WiFi networks, please think twice or take safe measures before using them.

1. Why do people like to log on to a public WiFi network?
A.Because it is free.
