1 . Teaching Poetry

No poem should ever be discussed or "analyzed", until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling "interpretation" of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than "analyzing" it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is "a criticism of life", and "a heightening of lief". It is "an approach to the truth of feeling", and it "can save your life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to communicate this to anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few thins about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

1. To have a better understanding of a poem, one should
A.analyze it by oneself
B.discuss it with others
C.practise reading it aloud
D.copy it down in a notebook
2. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?
A.Extending your life
B.Saving your life
C.Criticizing life
D.Heightening life
3. The last sentence in the third paragraph imply
A.The teaching of poetry is more important than any other subject.
B.More importance should be given to the teaching of poetry.
C.Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses.
D.One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry.
4. The underlined phrase "make room" in the last paragraph could be best replaced by
A.provide equipment
B.build a school

2 . Parents will do anything for their children. Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live in, parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concerns that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school, public school or home schooling.

Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that they can take in order to increase their child’s overall intelligence. According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, a child’s brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.

Researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a child’s mental as well as physical health. Some other researchers recommended that a second language should be taught when children are in preschool. They state that three to four years of age is the perfect time and that any age under four would work perfectly fine for a child’s brain development.

The average child will learn how to read between kindergarten and second grade. Many parents can give their children a jump start by teaching them to read before they start school. Children could have an adequate background of the alphabet and sounds of words before attending school. This can be done by simply reading to them whenever you want. The more comfortable they get, the easier the process will be.

1. From the first paragraph, we can infer that       .
A.parents find it hard to satisfy their kids’ various demands
B.parents meet a new challenge when raising their kids
C.parents have more choices in offering education to their kids
D.parents get actively involved in the process of their kids’ growth
2. What suggestion may the researchers in the passage make?
A.To train kids as early as possible.
B.To try as many means as possible.
C.To help kids develop as fully as possible.
D.To use as many available resources as possible.
3. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss about?
A.The proper time to teach children to learn languages.
B.The effective ways to help develop children’s brains.
C.The vital factors to have a great effect on children’s health.
D.The practical steps to arouse children’s interest in study.
4. We can replace the words “jump start” in the last paragraph with       .
A.inspirationB.introduction
C.suggestionD.promotion

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了 Game McGimsey作为一名火山学家的相关情况。

3 . “One thing I enjoy about my job is that I can work on something that is actually active,” says Game McGimsey, an American volcanologist (火山学家). Part of his job includes keeping an eye on Alaska’s many active volcanoes and giving people a heads-up when a volcano might erupt (喷发).

Like most jobs in the sciences, volcanology requires a lot of education. McGimsey received an undergraduate degree in geology at the University of North Carolina, then landed an internship (实习期) with a geologist at the USGS (美国地质勘探局) whose area of expertise was volcanoes. After earning a graduate degree at the University of Colorado, McGimsey accepted a job with the USGS and has been with the Alaska Volcano Observatory for 25 years.

Volcanoes can influence the world in ways we might not think about. For example, on Dec. 15, 1989, a 747 jetliner (a large airplane) flew through a thick ash (灰) cloud produced by Mount Redoubt, an Alaskan volcano that hadn’t erupted in 25 years. The ash caused all four engines to die, and the plane’s electronics went dead.

“The plane was within several thousand feet of flying into the mountains below when the pilots got a couple of the engines restarted and landed safely in Anchorage,” McGimsey says. It cost nearly $80 million to repair the damage to the plane.

Such situations show just how dangerous volcanoes can be. However, volcanologists know the risks and are prepared to protect themselves.

“There is certainly a higher danger level in volcanology than some other jobs,” McGimsey admits. “We understand how serious the danger is, and we don’t like taking unnecessary chances. We avoid getting too close to an erupting volcano, because it's not worth injury or death simply to get a rock or a photograph.”

1. Before working for the USGS, McGimsey _____.
A.had been a pilot for 25 years
B.knew nothing about the organization
C.had taught at the University of North Carolina
D.had studied at the University of Colorado
2. On Dec. 15, 1989, a 747 jetliner _____.
A.had all its engines restarted
B.flew into a volcano in Europe
C.survived an air accident luckily
D.disappeared in a huge ash cloud
3. What McGimsey says in the last paragraph shows his _____.
A.prideB.carefulness
C.lonelinessD.doubt
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.Game McGimsey: a man of his word
B.Game McGimsey: a volcano watcher
C.The eruption of Mount Redoubt
D.Lost land of the volcano

5 . When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it like it’s the most precious thing in the world. Because in some ways, it is.
Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves.
And that’s only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes. We’ve been scolded when we make mistakes—at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world: they make learning possible; they make growth and improvement possible.
By trial and error—trying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistakes—we have figured out how to make electric light, to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to fly.
Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, make works of genius possible.
Think about how we learn: we don’t just consume information about something and instantly know it or know how to do it. You don’t just read about painting, or writing, or computer programming, or baking, or playing the piano, and know how to do them right away. Instead, you get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing, then you make mistakes and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until you’ve pretty much learned how to do something. That’s how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn as adults. Mistakes are how we learn to do something new—because if you succeed at something, it’s probably something you already knew how to do. You haven’t really grown much from that success—at most it’s the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey was made up of mistakes, if it’s a good journey.
So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.
1. Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes?
A.Because mistakes make us suffer a lot.
B.Because it’s a natural part in our life.
C.Because we’ve been taught so from a young age.
D.Because mistakes have ruined many people’s careers.
2. According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistakes?
A.We should try to avoid making mistakes.
B.We should owe great inventions mainly to mistakes.
C.We should treat mistakes as good chances to learn.
D.We should make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
3. The underlined word “toddler” in Paragraph 6 probably means         .
A.a small child learning to walk
B.a kindergarten child learning to draw
C.a primary pupil learning to read
D.a school teenager learning to write
4. We can learn from the passage that         .
A.most of us can really grow from success
B.growing and improving are based on mistakes
C.we learn to make mistakes by trial and error
D.we read about something and know how to do it right away

8 . German cities are redrawing road markings to create new cycle paths for the duration of the Covid-19 lockdown, as cyclists demand more space to physically distance on their way to work.

Local authorities in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin trialled (试行)a temporary widening of two cycle paths on 27 March, arguing it would help cyclists keep the required 1.5-metre distance apart while car traffic was down owing to Germany’s coronavirus (冠状病毒)restrictions.

On Friday, the council declared the plan a success because it had improved cycling safety while not blocking traffic.

The council said it had used removable tape and mobile signs to mark out the widened paths, which can be removed when the current restrictions on movement are lifted.

Residents in 133 other German cities have formally submitted applications for similar pop-up bike paths to their local authorities on the back of a campaign by Environmental Action Germany (DUH), an environmental NGO.

The campaign group cites new research linking air pollution to   higher   coronavirus   death rates as an argument for redrawing road signs across the country. “The coronavirus is showing us that clean air is necessary,” said DUH’s chair, Jürgen Resch. “It is now especially important to temporarily make   it more important for people to move safely on their bikes. This will help improve air quality, enable exercise in fresh air while keeping a safe distance and avoid unnecessary accidents.”

In Germany, bike repair shops are allowed to work because of the Covid-19 going on. Three federal states, Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, have allowed bike shops to stay open.
