文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Brent Clayton的一生经历和他如何成为澳大利亚最著名的消防员招募专家,并通过自己的经验和培训帮助候选人准备成为未来的消防员。

1 . There are people for whom the motivation lies in their family’s or companions’ duties. For some people, the purpose lies in a soul’s spiritual awakening. Brent Clayton, a firefighter by profession, is such an individual who found his purpose early in life and kept working to fulfill it.

Born on March 3, 1984, Clayton hugely felt the need to serve others. He followed his mission in life and acquired his diploma in Public Safety. He gradually realized the importance of securing people’s lives, which strengthened his faith in his mission. Clayton further pursued his bachelor’s degree from the University of Melbourne and master’s degree from Federation University. Then, Clayton worked in the military for a period before moving into a role with the prison service as a prison guard, the youngest person to ever be employed by the service at the time.

After spending a decade in the fire service including training and recruitment, he gained enough experience to become Australian most prominent fire service recruitment expert. Clayton devoted many years of his life to the firefighter recruitment process and fire service industry. He wanted people to realize the true value of this profession by establishing its significance. To communicate his perspective, Clayton established Fire Recruitment Australia in 2009. He aimed to train the next generation and prepare them for the future. Clayton used his experience and years-long training to prepare candidates who were as enthusiastic about the well-being of the world as him.

Keeping the point in mind, Clayton wrote the book Fire Service Recruitment-The Process to Success. His idea was to join his learning into an accessible medium so others didn’t have to waste years wondering what to do when applying to become a firefighter. 文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了适合与家人一起看的经典圣诞电影。

2 . Christmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies.

The Grinch (2000)

This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey’s best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It’s the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. I promise it’s a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.

Love Actually (2003)

While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots, so I recommend watching a translated version. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.

Home Alone (1990)

This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While other family members are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch an 8-year-oldboy beat two grown men.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

You can’t have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It’s not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It’s about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The storyline may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age.

1. Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?
A.The Grinch.B.Home Alone.C.Love Actually.D.Miracle on 34th Street.
2. What is Home Alone mainly about?
A.An unsuccessful family vacation.
B.A boy protecting his home by himself.
C.A terrible suffering of a little boy.
D.An 8-year-oldboy’s practical jokes.
3. Why is Miracle on 34th Street so popular?
A.Owing to its moving plot.
B.Because of its funny story.
C.Due to its childish storyline.
D.Because of its famous actors and actresses.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要讲述悲伤的音乐可以治愈受伤的心灵。

3 . A broken heart. A sad ending to a love affair. That’s something most of us have experienced, or probably will. The experience can be destructive. You might find yourself listening more to sad music, hoping it can resonate with your feelings of disappointment, and you’ll never heal (治愈) from your broken heart.

You might go through a strong feeling of sorrow, as in Neil Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”, or the pain of a lyric from Bob Dylan’s “Love Sick”: “I’m sick of love. I wish. I’d never met you.

But research shows listening to sad music can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. Sad music can help heal and uplift you from your broken heart. Or, from any negative, disappointing life situation. It can activate empathy (共情) and the desire to reach out for others — both pathways out of the prison of heartache and hopelessness.

A recent study from Germany found the emotional impact of listening to sad music can lift the feelings of empathy, compassion, and a desire for positive connection with others. That, itself, is psychologically healing. It draws you away from anxiety with yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort.

Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” excited their mood. In fact, it did so when the person first consciously understood the situation causing their sadness before beginning to listen to the sad music. That is, when they intended that the sad music might help, they found that it did. But that wasn’t true if they just listened to sad music without first thinking about the sad situation.

Then, you may be answering the question raised in the old Bee Gees’ song, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?”

1. What does the underlined word “resonate” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Communicate.B.Cooperate.C.Contrast.D.Correspond.
2. Why are the songs of Neil Young and Bob Dylan mentioned?
A.To present the sad feelings from their songs.
B.To celebrate their achievements in the music field.
C.To compare the difference between their music.
D.To convince others of the healing effects of music.
3. What can we learn from the experiment from University of Kent?
A.Shared feelings might enable people to help others.
B.Sad music can strengthen relationship between people
C.Showing empathy does good both mentally and physically
D.Sad songs can benefit people with the intention of lifting spirits.
4. Which is a suitable title for the text?
A.What does music bring to us?B.How can sad music heal a broken heart?
C.Why is sad music so popular?D.When can we turn to others for help?

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章指出:“hello”这个词所承载的信息可以让听者对说话者的性格做出判断,研究发现人们的印象基于语调,强有力的声音给人更可靠的感觉。

5 . Consider what goes through your mind after you’ve taken your seat on an airplane. You’ve not seen the captain, but his or her voice comes over the air. “Hello, this is your captain speaking.” Are you about to fly the friendly skies? What you probably don’ realize is that you do make quick judgments (判断) based on very few factors the moment you hear “hello”.

Experts have discovered that “hello” carries enough information for listeners to draw judgments about the speakers personality, such as how reliable (可信赖的) he or she is. They recorded 64 students reading a telephone conversation. The word “hello” was then picked from each recording, and 320 different students listened to that word through a computer. The students were asked to score the voices according to personality, including attractiveness and warmth, giving them points from l to 10. Although every voice was played in one third a second, the students formed an opinion quickly.

It is amazing that from such short voices of speech they can get such an obvious impression of a person. And whether it is correct, their impressions are mostly the same as what the other listeners get. The research also suggests that people’ impressions are based on the tone (语调) of voice. Men and women who present the strength of their voices are regarded as more reliable.

The speed with which the students made their judgments makes much sense. Deciding who to trust can be important to your survival. There’s no point in listening to someone talk for 5 minutes to decide if they’re reliable or not — you could be dead already. The discovery may help improve computer-made voice technologies, experts say.

1. Why does the author mention “the captain” in paragraph 1?
A.To present a fact.B.To make a prediction.
C.To introduce a new research.D.To explain the rule on a plane.
2. How did the students tell the speakers’ personality?
A.Making telephone calls.
B.Playing voices at high speeds.
C.Picking “hello” from conversations.
D.Listening to and scoring the records of “hello”.
3. What can we do to leave a good first impression?
A.Make a long speech.B.Give powerful voice.
C.Follow other listeners.D.Speak as fast as possible.
4. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.The secret to tallying for 5 minutes.B.The different ways you say “hello”.
C.The application in voice technologies.D.The method of listening with attention.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了关于拖延症研究的新观点。

6 . Like many writers, I’m a supreme expert at procrastination (拖延症). When I ought to be working on an assignment, with the clock ticking towards my deadline, I’ll sit there watching pointless interviews or cat videos on YouTube.

According to traditional thinking — I, along with my fellow procrastinators, have a time management problem. By this view, I haven’t fully appreciated how long my assignment is going to take and I’m not paying enough attention to how much time I’m currently wasting on videos. With better scheduling, I will stop procrastinating and get on with my work.

Increasingly, however, psychologists are realizing this is wrong. Experts in the UK have proposed that procrastination is an issue with managing our emotions, not our time. The task we’re putting off is making us feel bad — perhaps it’s boring, too difficult or we’re worried about failing — and to make ourselves feel better in the moment, we start doing something else, like watching videos.

One investigation to inspire the emotional view of procrastination was published by researchers at Case Western Reserve University. They first prompted people to feel bad (by asking them to read sad stories) and showed that this increased their tendency to procrastinate by doing puzzles or playing video games instead of preparing for the test they knew was coming. Subsequent studies by the another team also showed low mood only increases procrastination if enjoyable activities are available as a distraction.

This fresh perspective on procrastination is beginning to open up exciting new approaches to reducing the habit. An approach, which is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, seems especially suitable. It argues that prioritizing choices and actions that help you get closer to get things done can keep you away from the unpleasant feelings. So the next time you’re going to procrastinate, make your focus as simple as “What’s the next action?”. Focusing on this one-step question takes your mind off your feelings and onto easily achievable action. “Our research and lived experience show very clearly that once we get started, we’re typically able to keep going. Getting started is everything.”

1. Which is true according to the traditional view of procrastinators?
A.They are usually irresponsible people.
B.They have difficulty in concentrating.
C.They enjoy watching videos while writing.
D.They can get work done with better schedules.
2. What can we know from paragraph 4?
A.Procrastination boosts your moods.
B.Procrastinators prefer puzzles to sad stories.
C.Test-takers can not escape bad emotions.
D.Negative emotions promote procrastination.
3. Why focusing on one simple question is suggested?
A.It shortens the process.B.It inspires the wildest imagination.
C.It may relieve unpleasant feelings.D.It can fix time management problem.
4. Which is the most suitable title of the text?
A.Prioritize Your To-do ListB.New Studies on Work Performance
C.Quit Watching Cat VideosD.Tremendous Damage of Procrastination

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了科学家的研究成果:来自信任的、亲近的人的触碰可以帮助其缓解压力,对身体健康有积极作用。

8 . According to Jim Coan, a psychologist from the University of Virginia, holding hands with someone you trust can have a positive effect on your health. Why? Researchers have shown in their studies that the simple act of touch can reduce stress and even lower heart rate.

In a study, Jim and his colleagues brought couples into the lab, and then put one of them in an fMRI machine to scan the activity in their brains. While scanning them, the participants looked at a screen, and on a series of tests, they either saw a green circle or a red “X”. A green circle meant that the test would end shortly and nothing else would happen. A red “X” meant that in a few seconds, there was a chance that they would receive a mild electric shock on their leg. The shock wasn’t painful, but it wasn’t exactly comfortable either.

During some of these tests, participants were in the fMRI scanner alone; during others, a researcher came in and held their hand; and on a final set of tests, their romantic partner came in and held their hand. Jim and colleagues found that when participants thought they might be getting a shock, they had a lower stress response in their brains when holding their romantic partner’s hand than in the other two conditions. And the happier the couples said they were in their relationships, the more the romantic partner’s hand lessened (减弱) the brain’s response to the shock. This study suggests that when we’re stressed, holding a loved one’s hand can reduce that stress.

The research also suggests that touch has immediate and positive effects on babies. Skin-to-skin contact can reduce crying, stress, and improve sleep. These effects can be long-lasting: adults, held a lot when they were babies, are the most likely to be healthy and well-adjusted — in fact, the more they were carried in babyhood, the better they adjust in adulthood.

1. How would a participant probably feel when seeing a red “X”?
A.Painful.B.Nervous.C.Hopeful.D.Excited.
2. Why did researchers do sets of tests in the study?
A.To make sure the study results are correct.
B.To test the relationships between couples.
C.To compare brain activities in different cases.
D.To check the functions of the fMRI scanner.
3. According to the last paragraph, what may the writer agree with?
A.The effects that touching has on babies don’t last long.
B.Babies’ problems can be solved mainly by touching.
C.Babies should be held and carried as much as possible.
D.Adults who were not held as babies can’t adjust to society.
4. Which of the following might be the most suitable title for the text?
A.Touch Improves Brain FunctionB.Touch Happens Everywhere
C.Touch Makes a Big DifferenceD.Touch Helps Form Good Habits

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了公司正在使用人工智能填补空缺职位,但人工智能可能会阻碍求职者申请职位。

9 . If job seekers knew companies were using AI to fill open positions, would it stop them from applying for the job? The answer, according to a recent study, is yes — sometimes.

The researchers found that in certain instances, like the screening (筛选) of applications, participants usually accepted some degree of automation. But in other instances, like interviews, automation could stop job seekers from applying for a position.

Companies facing recent labor shortages are increasingly turning to AI as a way to facilitate and speed up the hiring process. AI can be used in tasks such as screening job candidates, checking professional licenses, and interviewing candidates.

The new research suggests that using AI in hiring could be quite opposite. For instance, in one part of the study, participants were shown fictional job postings and then asked if they intended to apply for the position. The researchers found that if the job posting said that AI was used both to screen applicants and to conduct interviews, participants’ intention to apply for the position averaged 2.77 on a six-point scale. If AI was used only for the screening process, participants’ intention to apply averaged 3.73.

In another experiment, the researchers also found that study participants saw pros and cons in the use of AI in interviewing. When told the hiring would be fully automated, some participants expected the whole hiring process to be more consistent (始终如一的) in its judgments. But others tended to believe that they had less voice in the final outcome. Overall, the study results suggest this concern tends to outweigh the appreciation of AI’s lack of bias (偏见) at the interviewing stage.

A mixed approach may be a way to get the best of both worlds. Participants may have been more open to automation earlier in the hiring process because they could see some benefits from using AI — such as less-biased decisions. But during the later stages applicants expect personal interaction, to give them an opportunity to sell themselves and to learn more about the company.

1. Why do companies increasingly turn to AI in hiring?
A.To attract more applicants.B.To boost hiring process.
C.To pick out top candidates.D.To solve labor shortages.
2. In which part do participants prefer automation?
A.Screening job candidates.B.Interviewing candidates.
C.Grading professional licenses.D.Predicting final outcomes.
3. What does the underlined part refer to in Paragraph 5?
A.Less AI involvement.B.Lack of consistent judgments.
C.Less-biased decisions.D.Lack of personal interaction.
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Hi-tech is a two-edged sword.
B.AI finds its way to hiring process.
C.Automation may discourage job seekers.
D.A mixed approach should be adopted in hiring.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了钢琴家Jean-Francois Maljean发行了一首钢琴曲来纪念2022年北京冬奥会,他在音乐创造方面有很高的造诣,也非常喜欢中国和中国人民。

10 . Pianist Jean-Francois Maljean has released a piano piece to commemorate (纪念) the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, which kicked off with a grand opening ceremony held at the National Stadium on Feb 4. Titled For Beijing Olympics, the piano piece, which is about 3 minutes, was asked by the Chinese embassy in Belgium, with the aim of celebrating Chinese New Year and welcoming the Winter Olympics. He also wrote a song to support Wuhan in its fight against COVID-19 in 2020 and another song for Xi’an in December.

Born in Verviers, Belgium, Maljean started to learn the piano at age 6. At about 12, the classically trained pianist became interested in a diverse range of musical genres (类型), especially pop music like that of The Beatles.

He had planned to compose a song and English author Robert Murray, the pianist’s friend, even started to write the lyrics (歌词) about the Olympic Games. However, due to the short time, Maljean ended up just composing a piano piece, which was later released in the form of a music video featuring images of winter sports. “I think the piano piece works even better than a song. Since winter sports mainly give an impression of speed, I composed a mostly very fast piece, though there are some slower moments. And it works very well,” says Maljean, 68, who recorded the piece at his own studio in Belgium. Maljean recalls that he visited the capital and spent some time in China, where he was featured in a documentary for Belgian television. He traveled to many places in China, including Changchun in Jilin province, Guizhou province and Shanghai, and landed in Beijing to visit Olympic sites.

1. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The introduction of Maljean.
B.The masterpieces of Maljean.
C.Maljean’s works about China.
D.Maljean’s contribution to music.
2. What do we know about Maljean from the passage?
A.He is a great skiing enthusiast.
B.He is a classical music composer.
C.His documentary was filmed in Belgium.
D.He travelled to several Chinese provinces.
3. Why does Maljean think the fast piano piece is better than a song?
A.Because it reflects the features of winter sports.
B.Because he is more expert at composing pop music.
C.Because it contains Chinese classical music elements.
D.Because the lyrics are not in accordance with the music.
4. Which of the following best describes Maljean?
A.Generous and patient.B.Talented and caring.
C.Simple and independent.D.Adventurous and sensitive.
