文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章讲述了网上关于温哥华是否应该提供免费Wi-Fi的评论。

1 . A

       VANCOUVER:YOUR OPINION!
Should Vancouver have free wireless internet?
Vancouver is thinking about providing a Wi-Fi network for the downtown area. The city hasn’t decided yet, but the network will probably be free. What do you think of the idea? Post your comment!

It’s a good idea—but I’m sure it won’t be free. Other cities have already tried it and it hasn’t stayed free. Most of them charge about $10 a month. But people are happy to pay because then they can use Wi-Fi in their gardens or in Wi-Fi lifts. I’ve already said this, but I’ll say it again: Wi-Fi is a good idea, but I’ve never heard of a city where it’s stayed free for very long.

Comment by Mike

I’ve just read Mike’s post. Unbelievable! I don’t want to write emails from a lift or my garden! I think this is going too far. There are other things the city government could spend them oney on, aren’t there?—for example, more sidewalks or a better bus system.

Comment by Anna

I agree with Anna. A lot of people have already bought Wi-Fi for their homes—they don’t need it in the street, do they? Spend the money on things for teenagers! The city hasn’t built enough schools or parks yet.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者发现了同学马蒂的魔术秘密并最后与他组成魔术表演组合的故事。

3 . Marty was new at school. On his first day, he showed magic to his schoolmates. He made a toothpick (牙签) disappear and appear within seconds. Everyone wondered how he did it.

“How did you do that?” I asked. “Sorry, but that’s the first law of magic. A magician never lets out his secrets.” Marty smiled. I thought he was tricking everyone. I would make his secrets known to all.

The next day, Marty gave his second magic show. He said he could make things float (飘起). He had a ring in one hand and a pencil in the other. That’s when I saw it: a thin line tied around the end of the pencil and attracted to a button on Marty’s shirt! Sure enough, he made the ring “float” by sliding (滑动) it over the pencil and hanging it from the line. No one else noticed, but I found the secret. I got close to him and said, “I know how you did it.” He looked nervous and asked me, “Are you going to tell others?” I thought for a moment. If I told, I’d finally be able to prove Marty’s magic was fake (假的). Then Marty might lose his new friends. So I told him that I would say nothing about it. And then I walked away.

“Wait!” Marty jumped in front of me. “You’ve got a pretty good eye for magic. If you’re interested, I have an idea,” Marty suggested. And I accepted his idea. That’s how the Magic Marty and Mysterious Matt Lunch Show began. We’ve been a magic team for three months now. It turns out that instead of a fake magician, Marty is a real friend.

5 . Have you ever thrown a camel? Camels are large and heavy animals, so it would be hard to do so. But in the French-speaking Democratic Republic of the Congo, “to throw a camel” is a way of saying “to make a spelling mistake”. In the past, a phrase like that was not accepted by the French government as an official French term. But recently, the French Ministry of Culture worked on a new kind of dictionary that accepts the idea that many people in other countries and regions speak the language. The language has changed as time goes by and is different in places like Ivory Coast in West Africa or Quebec in Canada, compared to how it is in Paris.

The new online French dictionary includes new French words from around the world. It was released (发布) on March 18—just in time for International Francophonie Day on March 20. After its release, it is updated (更新) on a regular basis. It now contains about 600,000 terms. The French Culture Minister says the dictionary is not just for France’s 67 million citizens, but for the 300 million French speakers worldwide.

Supporters say the new dictionary is more democratic (大众化的) than earlier French dictionaries that   only showed the way highly educated French people spoke. Official dictionaries produced by the French Academy in Paris were first published hundreds of years ago and are regularly updated. The online dictionary, however, has a new part you cannot find in a book. If you live in Senegal, for example, you can search the dictionary, and it will give you the meaning of a word based on its use in that country.

“The French no longer have a monopoly (独占) on French,” a French magazine that supports the dictionary wrote recently. “And that is good news”.

1. What do we know about the phrase “to throw a camel”?
A.It tells us camels are too large to be thrown.
B.It can be found in an ancient French dictionary.
C.It is a phrase still not accepted by the French government.
D.It can be used when you see someone makes a spelling mistake.
2. How is the online French dictionary different from other dictionaries?
A.It needs updating regularly.B.It is mainly for non-French speakers.
C.It takes in worldwide French usages.D.It includes few official French terms.
3. What do the supporters think of the dictionary?
A.It helps spread standard French.B.It’ll attract more people to learn French.
C.It’ll benefit French’s development.D.It brings 300 million French speakers.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Culture.B.Opinion.C.Technology.D.Lifestyle.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了太空垃圾对于太空,地球,以及人类会造成的潜在的威胁以及伤害。

6 . Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the old objects launched into space, such as rockets and satellites? It’s called space junk, and much of it is still out there now. According to NASA, the definition of space junk is “any man-made object in orbit (轨道) around Earth that no longer serves a useful function”.

One large piece of space junk, a disused rocket, hit the dark side of the moon on March 4. The rocket’s origin is not clear, but scientists know that it was massive – weighing about 3 tons. It must have left a large crater (坑), estimated 10 to 20 meters wide, on the moon’s surface. It won’t be visible right away, but scientists are trying to locate it. “We will find the crater, eventually,” Mark Robinson, lead investigator for NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, told USA TODAY. “Depending on its location, it could take as long as 28 days.”

What’s significant about this space junk crash is that it draws attention to some of the potential dangers of space junk. First, the accumulation of space junk in Earth’s orbit means that satellites and the International Space Station (ISS) are at risk. In 2016, tiny space debris (残骸), smaller than a millimeter, caused a tiny chip in the ISS’ window. Imagine the damage that a larger piece of debris could cause. The European Space Agency website states that objects “up to 1 cm in size could disable an instrument or a critical flight system on a satellite” while objects over 10 cm “could shatter a satellite or spacecraft into pieces”. If this sounds terrifying, that’s because it is. Any collision with larger pieces of debris could be especially dangerous for manned spacecraft.

In addition to potential damage to spacecraft and satellites, space junk also poses a threat to the Earth itself. Crashes can send debris into the atmosphere where it can remain for many decades. Some powerful collisions can even send large debris hurtling (猛冲) toward Earth’s surface where it can affect the local environment. Leftover rocket debris can contain toxic materials that are harmful to plant and animal life. Some people in Siberia have even reported serious health problems after rocket debris landed in their regions in 2012, a local doctor told the BBC.

1. Which of the following can be regarded as space junk?
A.An abandoned space station.
B.A spacecraft orbiting the moon.
C.A crater on the moon’s surface.
D.A satellite working in low Earth orbit.
2. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2?
A.Tracking the rocket.B.Locating the crater.
C.Cleaning up the space junk.D.Finding out the rocket’s origin.
3. Why does the author mention the damage caused by tiny space debris in 2016?
A.To compare the effects of debris of different sizes.
B.To prove the space debris problem is getting worse.
C.To illustrate the potential dangers of space junk.
D.To explain the necessity of removing space junk.
4. What can be inferred about space junk from the last paragraph?
A.It’s likely to cause a global environmental crisis.
B.It can pose a lasting threat if it remains in the atmosphere.
C.It’s impossible to stop it from entering the atmosphere.
D.The toxic materials contained in space junk are the biggest threat it poses.

8 . Alpha, Beta, Delta... these Greek letters used to only appear in our math classes but are now in use in news headlines.

Now, it’s Lambda. As the Delta variant (变 体) spreads throughout communities in Asia, Europe and the United States, another variant, Lambda, is spreading rapidly throughout South America, Forbes reported on Aug 10.

On May 31, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a naming system for variants of COVID-19 that uses letters of the Greek alphabet (字母表). Before that, the public had to call a variant its scientific name or refer to it based on where it was identified.

For example, a variant of COVID-19 identified in South Africa in late 2020 was called variant 501Y.V2 or B.1.351. Media also called the same virus “the South African variant”. Now, everyone calls it “Beta”.

Compared to complicated scientific names, the Greek letters are much easier to remember. “It is a lot easier for a radio newsreader to say ‘Delta’ than bee-one-six-one-seven-two,” Jeffrey Barrett, a UK statistical geneticist told Nature.

WHO hopes this change will help stop the stigma (污名) associated with geography-based names. “I can understand why people just call it ‘the South African variant’ — they don’t mean anything by it,” Salim Abdool Karim, an epidemiologist in South Africa, told Nature. “The problem is, if we allow it to continue, some ill-intentioned people may take advantage of it.” “No country should be stigmatized for detecting and reporting variants,” Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s COVID-19 technical lead, wrote on Twitter.

As the virus is still evolving, 11 variants have been named so far. What if the 24 Greek letters are not enough? “We will possibly run out of the Greek alphabet, but we’re already looking at the next series of names,” Van Kerkhove told The Telegraph. “We’re actually considering star constellations(星座).”

Currently, the Virus Evolution Working Group and WHO’s legal team are double checking proposals to “make sure we don’t upset anyone with these names”, Van Kerkhove told The Telegraph.

1. What do Lambda and Delta have in common?
A.They are both chosen by Greek scientists.
B.They are both confusing to understand.
C.They are both Greek names of varieties of COVID-19.
D.They are both the places where COVID-19 was found.
2. What does Salim Abdool Karim probably agree with?
A.The virus should be named after the place where it is found and spread.
B.No country should detect or study COVID-19 without WHO’s permission.
C.People felt uncomfortable when they call COVID-19 “the South African variant”.
D.Some people with bad intention may judge other countries reporting COVID-19.
3. Why are scientists looking for the next series of names?
A.Because the naming system in use is not convenient.
B.Because the variants may outnumber the Greek letters.
C.Because people are more curious about star constellations.
D.Because it is illegal to rename the variants with letters.
4. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce new ways of renaming COVID-19 varieties.
B.To describe how scientists identified the varieties of COVID-19.
C.To explain why some people prefer geography-based names.
D.To arouse people’s awareness of more COVID-19 varieties.
5. In which part of a magazine could you find this passage?
A.Science.B.Travel.
C.Sports.D.First Aid.

9 . On a cold and clear day in February, Wes, his brother Jeff, his assistant Jordan, and I were following the GPS from the bear’s collar( 项 圈 ) up a steep and into a red earth canyon. The temperature dropped to zero as we cleaned the snow, trying to locate the black bear’s entrance.

The radio signal was so weak that as the sun set, we considered turning back. Then a curtain of snow collapsed, revealing a sandstone cave. It narrowed to a dark tunnel, and the musky(麝香味)smell of wild animal steamed from within. Wes didn’t hesitate. Armed with an expandable six-foot stick with a tranquilizer syringe(镇定剂喷射器) on its tip, he dived in headfirst. His brother crawled after him.

Thirty seconds later, they came flying backward out of the tunnel. The bear they’d collared a year and a half ago now weighed about 350 pounds— and he was awake! Wes had managed to jab him with the syringe, so we waited for the drug to take effect. But when we rounded the tunnel bend, wide eyes flashed at us. He was STILL awake!! Wes told me not to move while he backed out and jabbed another dose of tranquilizer.

The bear started crawling toward us. We desperately blocked the exit with backpacks and sticks as Wes jabbed him again— but he powered through our barriers with groggy(头晕眼花的) steps and began to crawl down the snowy slope. Jeff and Jordan held his back paws, managing     to hold on to him; Wes jumped on his back and grabbed his collar. The bear pulled them down   the hillside together. The tranquilizer had taken effect— he was asleep. Wes and his brother changed the batteries of the collar and checked his health, but we had one more difficult task: getting a 350-pound bear up the snowy path and safely back to his cave before he awoke. We pushed and pulled with every muscle. Before the drug wore off, our effort paid off.

When spring came, signals from the bear’s new radio collar showed he’d continued his everyday life—avoiding any more contact, we hope, with humans.

1. Why did the author and his friends go to the canyon?
A.They wanted to conduct a radio experiment.
B.They expected to hunt for a bear for fun.
C.They wished to explore the nature in winter.
D.They planned to maintain the bear’s radio collar.
2. How did they find the bear they had collared?
A.The bear’s unique smell reminded them.
B.A hunter led them to the bear’s habitat.
C.The strong sunlight revealed its cave.
D.A curtain of snow showed them the way.
3. What does the underlined word “jab” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Kick.B.Inject.
C.Cure.D.Assist.
4. What can we learn from paragraph 3 and 4?
A.The bear was more than pleased to see them again.
B.The drug took effect immediately after the bear took it.
C.They made it to send the bear back to its cave.
D.They gave the bear tranquilizer 4 times in the end.
