1 . Motion picture, also called film or movie, series of sill photographs on film, projected in rapid succession onto a screen by means of light. This new art form became one of the most popular and influential media of the 20th century and beyond. In early twentieth-century France, a new form of entertainment was becoming a hit—motion pictures. People crowded into theatres for short, silent, black-and-white films that showed everyday happenings, such as a train pulling into a station. These images were dimly projected onto white sheets. Usually, there was no sound. Occasionally, men at pianos played music to match the scenes.

Later, with the introduction of colour and sound, the silent film soon disappeared. Colour and sound introduced a new world into the cinema and steadily grew more effective. It can be used to produce a powerful dramatic impression. Moving images at theatres are now no longer novel, but back at the beginning of the art form, surprises lurked around every corner. During the initial showings of basic silent movies, some people in the audience screamed in fear, reacting to what they saw as if it were happening in real life. Moviegoers were known to even leap out of their seats due to the trains on the screen. At that time, few people understood what motion pictures were, so audience members could easily be fooled.

Today, people crowd into theatres for the latest 3D movies. Even older movies, such as the popular Star Wars series, are being re-released in 3D. Moviemakers are excited about the ability to involve the audience more directly in the story or film. In addition, theatres invest tens of thousands of dollars on high-quality audio systems so that everything from the safest whispers to the largest explosions sounds clear and realistic. Sound, dialogue, and music are used in combination not only with one another but also with the visual image. They can overlap and vary in intensity in a flexible and complex pattern with those high-quality audio systems.

What will movies be like 100 years from now? Will audience be able to smell scents in the films, taste the food that characters are eating, or even become part of the stories themselves? Only time will tell.

1. What can we know about the motion pictures in early 20th century France?
A.They were in color.
B.They were the main form of entertainment.
C.They greatly appealed to people then.
D.They often had background music.
2. Why did the moviegoers leap out of their seats?
A.Because the movies were too scary.
B.Because they didn't see trains in real life.
C.Because the old theaters were too crowded.
D.Because audiences were unfamiliar with the movies.
3. Why do theatres spend a lot on high-quality audio systems?
A.To re-release more old movies.
B.To develop movie-making technologies.
C.To improve movie-goers' experience.
D.To make the explosions safe.
4. What's the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To explain how realistic movies are today.
B.To tell something about future movie plans.
C.To introduce the history of movie technology.
D.To compare movie theatres over the last century.

3 . A serious attack on the fantasy story for children comes from those who do not wish children to be frightened,” writes C.S. Lewis in an essay named Three Ways of Writing for Children. Those who say that children must not be frightened mean two things. Firstly, they mean that we mustn’t do anything likely to give children fears, and secondly, they want to keep out of their minds that they are born into a world of death, violence, wounds, good and evil (邪恶). C.S. Lewis says he agrees with the first reason, but not the second.

He goes on to remark, “Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least hear of brave fighters and heroic courage. By limiting your child to perfect and nice stories of child life in which nothing alarming ever happens, they would fail to face fears and hardships.”   “It would be nice,”   he continues, “ if   no   little boy   in   bed   ever   hears   a   frightening sound. But if he is to be frightened, I think St. George, or any bright hero in armor, is a better comfort than the idea of the police.”

Bruno Bettelheim, a well-known child psychologist, also points out that fantasy stories provide children with a valuable education about good and evil. He believes that all children have many personal fantasies filled with fears and fantasy stories comfort them and offer solutions. Happy endings tell them that solutions and hope are real and model the kind of happy life children want to find.

A good fantasy suggests rather than teaches possible answers to life. It’s believed that reading fantasies quickens the ability to get and put ideas from books to reality. It’s what good literature does — it makes life larger.

1. According to the first paragraph, C.S. Lewis thinks that______.
A.children shouldn’t read any fantasy story because it is bad
B.adults shouldn’t do things that may frighten their children
C.death and badness should be kept out of children’s minds
D.writing a fantasy story is the best way of writing for children
2. What probably is St. George according to the text?
A.He is a policeman in real life.
B.He is a murderer caught by the police.
C.He is a brave man in a fantasy novel.
D.He is a frightening person in a story.
3. Why should children read fantasy literature according to Bruno Bettelheim?
A.Because it encourages children to have a lot of fantasies.
B.Because it helps children overcome fears and find solutions.
C.Because it teaches children to write their own fantasy stories.
D.Because it gives children a happy memory when they grow up.
4. It can be inferred from the text that ______.
A.good literature can give readers more valuable stories
B.fantasies can improve one’s ability to solve problems
C.personal fantasies can help children get away from danger
D.most children can understand what fantasy literature is

4 . Some teens are disapproving of compulsory BMI (body mass index) (身体质量指数) checks in PE classes. Do BMI checks at school do more harm than good? Two teens take sides.

Maya Meade, a high school freshman in Ohio, says yes. “I understand that schools want to weigh students because they are concerned about their physical health. That’s not a bad thing! But what about their mental health? For many students, appearance and self-image are huge sources of stress. Forcing teens to be weighed at school will only increase the pressure they feel to fit a certain mold (模子)”, says Maya.

In Maya’s opinion, weight is a personal matter that should stay between a doctor and a patient. She says, “Just imagine someone who struggles with body image being told that his or her BMI is too high as classmates look on! Even if other kids can’t hear, no student wants to feel judged by his or her teacher. That’s not why we go to school.”

Maya thinks if a school wants to have an impact on a student’s physical health, there are better ways to do it, such as providing healthy but filling meals, encouraging physical activity and teaching students about nutrition.

Ben Bagbek, a second-year student in a high school in New York, holds a different opinion. “There is no reason why a school should not be allowed to weigh its students and teach them how to calculate BMI! Obesity (肥胖症) is a huge public health concern in our country. And schools are in a position to help students understand what their weight means to their health -- before they’re at risk of life-threatening conditions.”

“A school’s job is to help students reach their full potential, and your health undoubtedly plays a role in your academic performance. BMI is not a perfect measurement, but it can help you identify the need for healthier eating habits or more physical activity.” says Ben.

The bottom line is: When you feel good, you learn better. As long as the actual number on the scale stays private, it should be viewed as an important part of your health education.

1. What are the two teens debating?
A.Whether students are enjoying PE classes.
B.Whether schools are body-shaming students.
C.Whether students should pay attention to weight.
D.Whether schools should help students lose weight.
2. According to Maya, what will BMI checks bring to students?
A.Healthy diets.B.Emotional stress.
C.Fierce competition.D.Positive self-awareness.
3. What does Maya think of weight?
A.It’s private.B.It’s important.
C.It’s hard to lose.D.It’s not a big deal.
4. Which of the following may Ben agree with?
A.Most school students are overweight.
B.BMI checks are of little help to students.
C.Schools have the right to weigh students.
D.It’s not schools’ duty to help students keep fit.

5 . Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you progress through school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. Friends influence your development, maturity(成熟) and the sense of responsibility. A familiar opinion is “You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are.” Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same.

Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. These people are not really friends. They are only “friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. Superficial (表面的)friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage. True friends are there whether you are rich or poor. It is easy to have many so-called “friends” if you are rich. By this time you should be able to recognize your friends as the “real” or the “false”.

True friends are most special. Sometimes they might not be easy to find, so you can consider yourself very lucky if you have one true friend. This friend is eager to help you whenever necessary. He or she knows you would do the same for them. A true friend is someone you can talk to about any subject or problem. You and your true friend have good understanding of each other. True friends support you, take your side, and build up your confidence.

D.What you value above anything is the friendship developing during childhood.
3. What does the underlined phrase “so-called friends” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Friends in need.

6 . In 1957, Max Vernon Mathews wrote the first computer program called Music, which enabled a computer to create sound and play it back. He was then working as an engineer at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. It enabled a large IBM computer to play a seventeensecond piece of music he had written.

The computer was so slow that it took an hour to play the seventeensecond piece of music. So Mathews moved the work to a tape player to play the music at a normal speed. He later said that the sound quality of the musical notes was not great, but the technical importance of the music was huge.

The science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke visited Bell Laboratories in the 1960s. He heard a computer “sing” the song Daisy Bell on devices (设备) and learned about the programs developed by Mathews and other engineers. Clarke noted this technology in his book 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was later made into a movie.

Mathews continued creating other versions of the Music program. He became interested in how computers could help musicians outside recording studios. The Groove program he developed was the first computer program made for live performances.

He also developed an electronic device he called the Radio Baton, which looks like two drum sticks. It enables the user to control the speed and sound levels of orchestral music (管弦乐) played on a computer by moving the two sticks on a special electronic surface.

Mathews said he believed modern musicians were not making full use of the power of computer music. He said a violin always sounds like a violin. But with his Music, the way a violin sounds is unlimited. He did not want computer sounds to replace live music, but he hoped computers would one day be considered serious instruments.

1. Why did Clarke visit Bell Laboratories?
A.To make his book into a movie.
B.To help Mathews develop Music.
C.To satisfy his own curiosity about music.
D.To gather materials for his literary creation.
2. What electronic music tools did Mathews create?
A.Something used to record live music.
B.Something used to create special sound.
C.Something used to improve computer music.
D.Something used to create computer music.
3. What does Mathews think of his Music?
A.It is more pleasant to the ear.
B.It can help make more sounds.
C.It will finally replace the violin.
D.It is more popular than live music.
4. What can we learn about Mathews?
A.He is the father of computer music.
B.His creation succeeded on the first try.
C.He wrote Music to replace instruments.
D.He changed the functions of computers.

7 . All of us spend a large part of our lives at home — eating, sleeping, relaxing and communicating with our family members. Our home is a shelter for us, away from the noisy, busy, and polluted world outside — a place where we can let down our hair and dress casually. Ecofriendliness (环保) is a hot word today and we all know we should make our environment as ecofriendly as possible. This is not only good for our health, but also good for the outward environment. Here are some easy and helpful tips to make your home ecofriendly.

Kitchen

Plan the kitchen to be bright and airy so that you don't have to turn on the lights at daytime. Don't make wasteful use of the gas. Keep all ingredients for cooking ready before lighting the gas. Turn it to low when not required — always using it on "high" burns a lot of gas.

Indoor plants

Plants are extremely ecofriendly and can be used to make your home look lively. Apart from adding life to home, they give out O2, thus making the air inside fresh. You can keep plants in your home, but be sure to show them some sunlight regularly. Also, if they are kept outside, clean their leaves with a wet cloth, as dust may be added to them. A home decorated (装饰) with plants looks attractive. Plants are a natural home decorating gift that shows concern about the environment. A green plant is a wonderful gift which will protect the earth and is sure to be appreciated.

Saving water

Most of the time, we take water for granted — we keep water running while brushing our teeth or washing clothes. Needless to say, this is a huge waste of natural resources (资源). Try to recycle water. For example, the water used for washing vegetables can be used for watering plants; the soapy water used for washing clothes can be used to clean the bathroom and kitchen.

1. Why is the importance of our home discussed in Paragraph 1?
A.To advise us to communicate more with our family members.
B.To show it's necessary to make our home ecofriendly.
C.To advise us to spend more time staying at home.
D.To show the outside world is noisy and polluted.
2. What is advised to be done in the kitchen?
A.To open the window.
B.To prepare simple meals.
C.To save energy.
D.To turn down lights.
3. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.We don't realize the importance of water.
B.We try our best not to waste water.
C.We don't use water frequently.
D.We make full use of water.
4. Which could be the best title for the text?
A.Live a relaxing life.
B.Create a clean and safe home.
C.Our home is a shelter for us.
D.Make your home ecofriendly.

8 . High school often serves to prepare students for a college education, or it might be the last stop on the educational journey for some people. No matter which path one may select, high school life offers students the opportunities to achieve a great deal of learning, get to know themselves, or simply have fun.

In America, high school is a special experience with a culture of its own. Public high schools exist in all communities. Every community in the United States has a public school system, teaching children at primary and secondary levels. These schools are free and supported mainly by taxes, with additional aid from states and governments. Private high schools are a choice for parents who want to give their child a better education. They are often very expensive. Private schools are usually famous for their academic reputation (学术声望). This academic reputation is related to college preparation.

In high school, students study various academic subjects such as English, literature, foreign languages, maths, science, history, geography and so on. Some large high schools have classes that teach job-related subjects like auto mechanics, cooking and others, in order to provide students with skills needed for certain jobs. High school might also offer “honours classes” for particularly smart and sharp students.

Some states give basic skills exams during the last year of the high school process to make sure that certain academic standards are met, but, again, high school curricula (课程) vary greatly among communities.

High school sports, particularly basketball and football, are often organised. Inter-city and cross-town competitions are often held. These competitions are popular, especially in communities that do not have their own professional sports teams. Nearly all high school teams have nicknames: the Knights and the Tigers being some famous examples.

1. Which of the following is not the supporting source of public school?
A.Taxes.B.States.
C.Community.D.Governments.
2. Which of the following statements is true about private schools in the United States?
A.Private schools are a better choice for parents than public schools.
B.All private high schools in the United States are very expensive.
C.Private schools can usually provide better college preparation.
D.There is a private school system in every community.
3. What does the author say about American high schools?
A.Some schools have special classes for smart students.
B.Some states set academic standards in the first year.
C.Sports competitions are only in the city or town.
D.All communities have their own professional sports teams.
4. What might be the best title for the text?
A.Life in the USA
B.Education in the USA
C.Public Schools and Private Schools in the USA
D.High Schools in the USA

10 . Every day around the world, thousands of people with little to no scholarly training in art history walk into museums. They may or may not read notice boards that share relevant information of the artworks or artists. Imagine, before being permitted to direct their eyeballs to the art on the walls, museum visitors were required to read a 15-or 20-page introduction to each piece or each artist. How many people would go to museums if that were the case?

Yet this seems to be the expectation when it comes to reading classic literature. Classic novels typically come with 15-or 20-page introductions, which often include spoilers, assuming that readers do not come to classic books to discover, be absorbed in, and be surprised by the story world. Also, apparently, we mustn't read classics alone, without experts guiding our experiences.

However, classic literature is in a unique position to show us that we' re not alone in our pains and joys. By taking us out of our time, classic books free us to see beyond the set of beliefs we stick to and to connect human experiences that remain alive across time and place. What could be more grounding, more comforting, than seeing ourselves in the battles, longings, and pleasures that have played out across hundreds, thousands of years of human history? Our personal engagement is the first step of a longer journey of discovery that deepens our knowledge and understanding of ourselves and our world. We may for example, feel for Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter though we despair of the world she lived in.

While we're letting go of things, let's stop worrying about understanding everything. We can't. It will be fun if we embrace curiosity, the pleasure of working out a mystery, and our common relationships as humans. We can feel, for example, the power of self-sacrifice in Charles Dickens'A Tale of Two Cities even when we lack full understanding of the cultural references and language.

1. Most museum goers_________.
A.lack professional art knowledge
B.understand the artworks well
C.enjoy reading notice boards
D.share common interest in artworks
2. What can the "spoilers" in Para. 2 possibly be?
A.Story writers
B.Readers' expectations.
C.Plots given away in advance
D.Guiding experts
3. What prevents readers enjoying reading classics?
A.Showing curiosity about the writers
B.Letting go of things.
C.Working out mysteries.
D.Trying to understanding everything.
4. What message is mainly conveyed in the passage?
A.We should find more fun from classics.
B.Classic literature benefits readers a great deal
C.Experts need to give readers better guidance.
D.Reading classics is a personal exploration.
