1 . The Complete Guide to Alberta’s Icefields Parkway
Introduction
The 144-mile Icefields Parkway, or Highway 93, is one of Canada’s most scenic road trip routes and is a must for visitors to Alberta. It is popular among visitors, and has a lot of viewpoints where you can see glaciers (冰川), waterfalls, lakes, rivers, forests, and valleys. The parkway starts in the town of Jasper, in Jasper National Park, and travels south to near Lake Louise, in Banff National Park. Some travellers will go to the parkway from the southern end, though. The Icefields Parkway is open throughout the year, but most travellers will prefer to drive it in the warmer months.
Stops to Make Along the Way
Athabasca Falls: The 75-foot waterfalls are not exceptionally high, but they roar with a large volume of water, making them some of the most impressive falls in the Canadian Rockies.
Sunwapta Falls: Fed by the Athabasca Glacier, the Sunwapta Falls are divided into the upper and lower sections. The upper falls are easily accessible, but you need to hike a short distance to get to the lower falls. The lower falls are definitely worth the walk if you want to escape (逃离) the crowds in the summer. Sunwapta Falls are about 34 miles from Jasper.
Where to Get Supplies
If you’re spreading this road trip over more than one day, stock up on snacks in Jasper or Lake Louis and fill up your tank there, too. There are no major towns between Jasper and Lake Louise. In the summer, there are a few places to eat and stay along the way, but prices tend to be high because of the lack of competition and the area’s remoteness.

2 . A 71-year-old Swedish man “can’t put into words” how thankful he is for the new technology that quickly flew him into the small category of only ten percent of people who survive sudden heart stopping.
The man now has made a full recovery and returned home, after the speedy delivery of a defibrillator(除颤器)—via autonomous drone(无人驾驶飞机). The company behind the drone pilot project says it’s the first time in medical history, a drone has played an important part in saving a life during a heart stopping.
He was in his driveway when the attack happened. Normally, you have about ten minutes to get help in such a situation. Luckily, a telephone call was immediately placed requesting emergency services and he lived in a region that had partnered with Everdrone’s innovative life-saving programme called EMADE (Emergency Medical Aerial Delivery service). EMADE drones delivered a defibrillator to the scene—and the amount of time from the alarm(警报) until the defibrillator was safely delivered at the doorstep of the incident address was just over three minutes.
Even luckier, a doctor happened to be driving by and stopped to see if he could help. “I was on my way to work at the local hospital when I saw a man collapsed in his driveway and I immediately rushed to help,” says Dr. Mustafa Ali. After the ambulance arrived, the patient was rushed to the hospital.
The man said, “If it wasn’t for the drone I probably wouldn’t be here.”
275,000 patients in Europe and 350,000 in the US, suffer from heart stopping annually. About 70% of heart stopping occur in private homes without defibrillators on site. The chance of survival decreases by 7%—10% with each minute following the collapse(突然倒下)—and as a result, the current survival rate among heart stopping patients is merely 10%.

3 . Next time you are struggling with the crossword, try putting the kettle on. Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.
Researchers gave participants either tea or water and then asked them to complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity known as convergent thinking (聚合思维).
In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis, head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. After analyzing the results in a way that ruled out the potential effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers found those who drank the tea performed significantly better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13.89 in the game compared with 12.94 for water drinkers.
The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea contains special components, which can improve attention, but the participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea — 90 ml, on average — and carried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have been ignored. This result showed the tea drinking event itself — rather than the biological components of tea — played a positive role, the researchers said.
Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a specific set of personality traits(特征), such as smart, creative, elegant, confident, and stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated (刺激) by tea, the mental representation of a tea drinker is also activated, and they unconsciously think that they should be smarter and more creative.

6 . Bicycle riding has become popular world-wide. Bicycles are typically made of metals such as steel and aluminum(铝), but now there is a company making bikes differently. These bicycles are made from British-grown ash trees by the Welsh furniture maker Andy Dix.
“It’s great to push for more bikes and fewer cars on the road, but the traditional bike industry as a whole is using a large amount of energy,” Dix said. “I’ve always tried to reduce environmental impact in my work. Rather than using metals, or plastic, I’m building bikes from green materials—wood.”
It took two years to build a model bike that was made from the ash tree. Dix tested the wooden bike on the roughest road she could find and discovered that it was comfortable, strong, and excellent at absorbing vibrations (吸收震动) . He put more than 3, 000 miles on the bike. Then he rode a normal bike on broken roads, which would have shaken him to bits, and then the penny dropped. “Not only could I make a bike out of wood, but it had advantages over other materials,” Dix said.
While cutting down trees can add more carbon to the atmosphere to a certain degree, sustainable(可持续的) tree farming is possible, which can balance the needs of the environment and forest communities. And Dix said producing a tonne of aluminum results in 4, 532kg of carbon emissions while producing a tonne of wood only gives out 457kg. Making bicycles out of wood won’t make a huge difference. “We have this material growing naturally all around us. It’s time people started to think about using it,” Dix said.
The cost of a new wooden bike is out of reach for many bicycle riders. But the idea of using sustainable materials like ash trees could start a new cycling change that puts the environment first. Helping the environment could be just a pedal(踏板) away.

7 . Researchers were interested in the rock iguanas(鬣蜥) on the Exuma Islands which are often fed grapes by tourists. They were curious about how this high-sugar food might have influenced the iguanas’ health. Over the past two decades, the remote islands have seen a big increase in the number of tourists. Just 25 years ago, some of the islands had zero to 20 visitors a day. Now they receive more than 200 tourists each day.
The team collected 48 rock iguanas: 24 from islands that tourists don’t visit and 24 from islands frequently visited by tourists. They collected blood samples and found the iguanas from the islands where tourists frequently fed them had the highest glucose level. The researchers say the findings how possible health issues could affect the iguanas’ long-term survival, which leads to health concerns.
“A visitor to these islands would never doubt that the iguanas were doing fine. They are big, active, and plentiful on islands visited by tourists. These phenomena(现象) are possibly concealing internal health problems that can cause a rapid decrease in population, so we need to watch the activity closely and find out ways to deal with these problems,” said Chuck Knapp, an author of the study.
“We also hope that the finding will lead to a scientific way that also protects people who depend on tourism. Many tour operators show the wildlife to visitors, and our research can be used to inform strategies that area win-win for wildlife and tour operators,” said Knapp.
“The rock iguanas face many threats to their existence, such as loss of habitat and climate change. Many of these threats are very difficult to deal with, but controlling the influence of human activities like feeding is a simple way we can help the species,” says Falon Cartwright, the director of science and policy at Bahamas National Trust.

8 . When you want to buy or rent a house, you are expecting not only the good quality of the house but also the nice neighbours who live near you. Almost everyone agrees that it is helpful to live with some good neighbours. However, the standard of good neighbours is different from people to people. In my opinion, a good neighbour should be someone who respects your life, is ready to help others and concerned about the environment in the neighbourhood.
First of all, it is very important for your neighbour to respect you life. Just imagine, if you have a neighbour curious (好奇的) about you, especially your personal life, and tries to know more about it by whatever means, what will you feel? What is more, he or she may also talk with others about your life. Do you want to live with him or her anymore? The answer is definitely negative. You will feel very uncomfortable to have such kind of people in your neighbourbood and you may move as soon as possible.
Next, what you should consider is that a good neighbour is always willing to give you a hand when you need him or her. For example, if you are not at home and someone suspect (可疑的) tries to unlock your door, your neighbour who sees it should call 911, and it will help you to protect your property (财产).
Finally, a good neighbor should be concerned about the environment, especially around your neighbourhood. He or she should throw all the rubbish into garbage and keep the place clean, because a good environment can make people who live in it comfortable and relaxed all the time.
1. The following are the qualities(素质) of a good neighbour EXCEPT .A.respecting others’ life | B.being kind to others’ pets |

A.The qualities of a good neighbour |
B.The differences between good neighbours |
C.The importance of a good environment |
D.How to get along with our neighbours |
9 . When Ray was about seven, he had a very close friend Mike. They lived near each other, traveled to and from school together, played together, were together in school, and spent time in each other’s homes.
Once, in school, Ray got bad marks (分数) and was very down. He just walked round and round the school playground. Mike followed Ray. Far enough not to stifle him, but near enough never to let Ray out of his sight. Ray was very angry at that time. He just wanted to be alone. At one point, he got so angry that he even shouted out, “Just leave me alone!” But Mike just silently walked on behind Ray, still never saying a word.
It was only after many years, almost twenty years later, that Ray truly began to understand the lesson on friendship which had been shown to him that day, Ray and Mike had already separated by then, only seeing each other a couple of times every year. But Ray still remembered that thing with gratitude (感激), a warm feeling in his heart and sometimes tears in his eyes.
Mike had taught him that true friendship does not only show up when one wants or needs it. A true friend will be around when he thinks you need him, regardless of (不管) whether you want it or not or whether you would admit it or not. He will be there even when you drive (赶走) him away, as long as he feels his presence will help you. But he will not speak if you do not want him to, and he will give you the peace that you expect.
The true friend will do what Mike did, following a distance behind, giving you space and peace, but always nearby, casting (投) a silent eye on you to make sure that you do not do anything silly, making sure he is around if you need him, and being ready to pick you if you fall anytime, to wipe your tears if they flow.
Appreciate your true friends. And be a true friend to others.
