文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了法罗群岛上一些有趣的参观地以及交通方式和住宿等情况。

1 . Located in the Atlantic Ocean halfway between Norway and Iceland, the Faroe Islads are a still-somewhat-undiscovered destination. Known for seeping landscapes and sometimes-harsh weather, these island definitely deserve a spot on your bucket list.

Fun things available here

·See the famous Mulafossur Waterfall in Gasadalur

·Hike to Trælanípa to see the Sørvágsvatn, the “floating lake”

·Hike to the Kallur Lighthouse on Kalsoy

·Drive out to the town of Gjógv

·See Saksun Church and the surrounding scenery

·Explore the capital city of Tórshavn

Getting around

Renting a car and driving is the best way to fully experience the Faroe Islands. Public transport does exist, but buses don’t run to most places very frequently. It is recommended that you book your car ahead of time, especially during the summer. (Search for rental cars here.)

Where to stay

Thanks to the roads, bridges, and tunnels, nothing is very far away in the Faroe Islands. You can get from Tórshavn to Tjørnuvkí or Gjógyv in just over an hour—meaning you could easily base yourself in Tórshavn for your whole trip if you wanted.

If you do feel like staying outside of the capital for a night or two, consider making Gjógv your second base:   Funningur is the only accommodation available in Gjógv, but it’s lovely. A nice guesthouse and restaurant sitting on a hill overlooking the village. (Read reviews on TripAdvisor | Book here)

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了华盛顿大学研究团队开发的一种新型智能扬声器系统,该系统具有在嘈杂环境中定位和管理声音的能力,特别是在现场会议中的应用。

2 . In online meetings, it’s easy to keep people from talking over each other. Someone just hits the mute (静音) button. But for the most part, this ability doesn’t translate easily to recording in-person meetings. In a cafe, there are no buttons to silence the table beside you.

The ability to locate and manage sound —separating one person talking from a specific location in a crowded room, for example — has challenged researchers, especially without the help of cameras.

A team led by researchers at the University of Washington has developed a shape-changing smart speaker, which can divide rooms into speech areas and track the position s of individual speakers. With the help of the team’s deep-learning AI model, the system lets users mute certain areas or separate simultaneous (同时的) conversations, even if two people have similar voices. In a room meeting, such a system might be used instead of a central microphone, allowing better control of in-room sound.

“If I close my eyes and there are10 people talking in a room, I have no idea who’s saying what and where they are in the room exactly. That’s very intractable for the human brain to process. Until now, it’s also been hard for technology,” said co-lead author Malek Itani. “For the first time, we’re able to track the positions of different people talking in a room and separate their speech.” Early research has required using overhead cameras, projectors or special surfaces. The new system is the first to use only sound.

Instead of processing the sound in the cloud, as most smart speakers do, the new system processes all the sound locally. And even though some people’s first thoughts may be about observation, the system can be used for the opposite, the team says.

“It can actually benefit privacy, beyond what current smart speakers allow,” Itani said. “I can say, ‘Don’t record anything around my desk,’ and our system will create a bubble 3 feet around me. Nothing in this bubble would be recorded.”

1. What did the research team focus on?
A.Allowing real-time communication by AI.
B.Developing Al-powered language models.
C.Lowering the background noise of conversations.
D.Tracking and controlling sound in crowded settings.
2. What does the underlined word “intractable” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Dangerous.B.Natural.
C.Difficult.D.Necessary.
3. Which of the following can best describe the new system?
A.Educational.B.Influential.
C.Pioneering.D.Costly.
4. What is the advantage of the new system according to Itani?
A.It records nearby conversations.
B.It offers improved privacy protection.
C.It deadens the noise in a particular space.
D.It includes simultaneous translation service.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了2021年的一份报告证实了人工食用色素的负面影响,加州政府出台新规则,要求含有人工食用色素的食品贴上警告标签。

3 . That artificial food dyes (染料) are unhealthy is not news. Some are known to cause hyperactivity (多动症) in some children, affecting their ability to learn. But regulatory agencies (监管机构) around the world don’t necessarily agree on which food dyes are a problem, or why. That may soon change. A 2021 peer-reviewed report by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment concluded that artificial food dyes “cause or worsen neurobehavioral (神经行为的) problems in some children” and that the current levels that are regarded safe for consumption by the federal government are too high.

California is now considering requiring warning labels on food products and dietary supplements containing the seven most commonly used artificial dyes. The warning label requirement would put California on par with the European Union, which since 2010 has required food products containing certain artificial food dyes to carry warning labels about their negative effect on activity and attention in children.

Artificial dyes are used in foods for one reason: to make products look prettier. Bright colors make candies appealing, especially to kids. But dyes are also in chocolate cake mixes, salad dressings and other products that don’t seem to cry out for a color boost.

In Europe, it was the 2010 label lawmaking that triggered (引发) companies’ decisions to reformulate. “If you’re a company, you do not want to put a warning label on your product.” says Lefferts, an environmental health consultant. Warning labels are why European Starburst Fruit Chews are now colored with natural products, not the artificial dyes that brighten their North American counterparts (同类商品).

Given that artificial food dyes are used far more than needed, we need to be more cautious. After all, we don’t dye fresh fruits and vegetables, but we do dye candy and sprinkles, points out Joe Schwarcz, a chemistry professor at McGill University in Montreal. “The foods in which you find food dyes are foods that are poor in nutrition,” he says. “If you limit foods that contain food dyes, you automatically make your diet better.”

1. What can we learn about artificial food dyes from paragraph 1?
A.A 2021 report confirmed their negative effects.
B.The fact that they are harmful is newly revealed.
C.Regulatory agencies consider them a serious problem.
D.The Federal government thinks their current standard too high.
2. What does the underlined part “on par with” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.In opposition to.B.In line with.C.Ahead of.D.Behind.
3. Which might be a possible result of the new rule according to the article?
A.Food companies will stop coloring their products.
B.More fresh fruits and vegetables will appear in the market.
C.Food companies may replace artificial dyes with natural products.
D.It will be hard to find packaged foods without warning labels of dyes.
4. What’s Joe Schwarcz’s attitude towards artificial food dyes?
A.Approving.B.Neutral.C.Tolerant.D.Concerned.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要分析了垃圾食品不健康但是仍然很受欢迎的几个原因。

4 . Despite the fact that burgers, chips and fries are known as some of the most unhealthy food we can eat, they are still the most popular food.

There are a few reasons behind that. First, junk food is generally easy to get and take with you. This convenience is a major draw for many, especially people who are always on the go. Restaurants like McDonald’s and KFC can be found outside many schools and workplaces, providing meals in under a minute.

Secondly, junk food contains a lot of added sugar and fat. This kind of food causes our brain to send out certain chemicals, which produce the feeling of relaxation, pleasure and enjoyment. That’s why such food is called “comfort food”.

Thirdly, our ancestors didn’t have such easy access to the huge variety of food we come across every day. They didn’t have the convenience of having food as easily as we do. So they made it a habit to eat as much as they could to survive and protect themselves from the hard natural conditions. The cave mentality (心理) is passed down to us, which makes us believe that we can never have enough food that is high in sugar and fat, no matter how crazily we eat.

Besides, when we are too worried and tired to relax, our body produces cortisol (皮质醇), which increases the sugar content in the blood, so it can be used as energy to aid in fat and carbohydrate metabolism (碳水化合物代谢). Additionally, it is also found to increase hunger. That’s the reason why when we’re thinking about unpleasant things, we prefer foods that are high in sugar, fat and carbohydrate, that is to say unhealthy food.

1. Why are McDonald’s and KFC mentioned?
A.To show they take up the best site.B.To show they provide good service.
C.To show they are famous for their taste.D.To show they make junk food easy to get.
2. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 4?
A.We need all kinds of food.B.Our ancestors lived a hard life.
C.We are born to eat more than we need.D.It is difficult for us to change our habits.
3. What is a cause of the increase of sugar content in our body?
A.Too much stress.B.A wish for food.
C.A fast metabolic rate.D.Not having enough energy.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.How harmful junk food is.B.Why fast food is so delicious.
C.How we can develop a healthy lifestyle.D.Why we love unhealthy food so much.

7 . You probably consider calorie (卡路里) burning with training. You can get great calorie burning effects with the following exercises.

Running

Running is one of the best calorie burners out there. An average person can burn anywhere from 500 to 1,000 calories in one hour of running. Speed and pace are all factors that can affect calorie burning. But running uses every muscle group in the body, allowing you to burn more calories.

High Intensity Interval (高强度间歇运动) Training (HIIT)

If you want intensity, HIIT is right for you. This physical exercise involves working hard in intervals, then resting. Because your heart rate will stay at a high level, you’ll burn more calories in less time. On average, a person will burn 400 to 600 calories in 30 minutes.

Jumping rope

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。心理学家告诉我们,当我们进入并生活在一种新的文化环境中时,会经历四个基本阶段的文化冲击,还有一个人们没有预料的反转期。

8 . Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture.

Culture begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the period of time when we first arrive in a country where everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from “jet lag” but we are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food.

Unfortunately, after we have settled down into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture.

The third stage is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor.

The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.

There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. This is called “reverse culture shock”. Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

1. How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock?
A.Happy and excited.B.Bored and homesick.
C.Lonely and depressed.D.Angry and frustrated.
2. One’s sense of humor becomes stronger in the “adjustment stage” because________.
A.he gradually gets used to the language and culture
B.he has to understand jokes in a new culture
C.humor can help him to become stronger
D.he often plays jokes on others to be popular
3. Why might reverse culture shock be a problem?
A.It hardly ever happens.B.It is extremely stressful.
C.It is unexpected.D.It only happens to young people.

10 . A man paralyzed (瘫痪的) in 2011 has regained the ability to stand and walk with the help of implants (植入物) placed in his brain and spinal cord.

The patient, Gert-Jan Oskam, was told he would never walk again after a biking accident. Now, using the implants, “we’ve read the thoughts of Oskam and translated these thoughts into stimulation (刺激) of the spinal cord to reestablish voluntary movement,” said Grégoire Courtine, a neuroscientist in Switzerland.

The technology enables natural control over the movements of Oskam’s legs and he can walk and stand without support. “Months ago, I was able, for the first time after over ten years, to stand up and have a beer with my friends,” Oskam says. “That was pretty cool.”

The new technique involved placing two implants in Oskam’s brain. When he wants to move, the implants read his brain signals and send that information to sensors on a device on his head. A computer uses these signals to predict how Oskam intends to move, then turns his intentions into commands and sends these commands to another implant in the spinal cord. Finally, the spinal implant stimulates Oskam’s muscles according to his intended movement. Through this “digital bridge”, the researchers re-opened a line of communication between Oskam’s brain and spinal cord.

For now, the device is still at the experimental stage. Next, the researchers would like to be able to make the device’s hardware, which Oskam carries in a backpack, more compact (小巧). Harvey Sihota, CEO of the U.K. Charity Spinal Research, says the technology still has a long way to go before becoming available to the public, but the results are “very encouraging”.

1. How might Oskam feel after the implants were put in?
A.Cheerful.B.Secure.
C.Disappointed.D.Uncomfortable.
2. What provides direct stimulation to Oskam’s muscles in the new technique?
A.The brain implants.B.Sensors on his head.
C.A computer.D.The spinal implant.
3. What are the researchers most likely to do next concerning the device?
A.Mass-produce it.B.Improve its hardware.
C.Explore its other functions.D.Test it on a larger sample size.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Brain Implants Cure Paralyzed Man Completely
B.Paralyzed Man Walks Again Using His Thoughts
C.Digital Bridge Connects Paralyzed Men Closely
D.New Technology Offers Hope For Biking Accident Victims
