文章大意:本文是一篇议论文,主要讲的是跑步不仅能减肥,保持健康,更多的意义在于挑战自我、净化心灵,给人们带来快乐、兴奋、平静。

1 . Running is one of the most popular sports in the UK. But for many runners, the real reason we head out to beat the roads until our legs hurt is more intangible (无形的) than weight loss or fitness.

Many runners become interested in times. They try to break the 40-minute barrier for the 10K, or run under four hours for the marathon. Yet, really, these times are almost meaningless. And as soon as they are achieved, another target is thrown out almost immediately.

The times are only the carrots we put in front of ourselves. But why do we put them there in the first place? Nobody ever gives a wise answer. Deep down, we all know the answer. Running brings us joy. Watch small children when they are excited, at play, and mostly they can’t stop running.

As we run, we begin to sense that childish joy, which is born to live a wilder existence. As we run, the layers of responsibility and identity we have gathered in our lives, father, mother, lawyer, teacher, all fall away, leaving us with the raw human being.

If we push on, running harder, deeper into the loneliness, further away from the world and the structure of our lives, we begin to feel strangely excited, separated yet at the same time connected, to ourselves. With nothing but our own two legs moving us, we begin to get a sense of who, or what, we really are. After a long run, everything seems right in the world. Everything is at peace. To experience this is a powerful feeling, strong enough to have us coming back, again and again, for more.

1. Why does the author think setting time goals is almost meaningless?
A.Those time goals are used to exchange carrots.
B.Those time goals can’t be achieved without efforts.
C.People will be never satisfied with the easily achieved time goals.
D.There will always be a new time goal once the former one is achieved.
2. What’s the author’s attitude towards running?
A.Positive.B.Passive.C.Indifferent.D.Doubtful.
3. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Breaking records.B.Running for the marathon.
C.Feeling lonely after running.D.Feeling peaceful after a long run.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Running to Be the Real YouB.Running to Lose Weight
C.Running to Become an AdultD.Running to Achieve Success

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了锻炼对精神的几个重要好处。

5 . If you hope to improve your health, exercise is obviously a good way. But do you know that it has great effects on the mind too? We often pay little attention to the great mental benefits that exercising regularly can have. It will allow you to stay active and healthy for a long time, allowing you to have both the physical and mental (身心的) benefits.    1

Improve your mood (心情) . Exercise is just what you need if you’re looking for some positive feelings. It is possible that you have experienced a happy time after exercise. While you are exercising, “happiness hormones (荷尔蒙)” are released.     2

Reduce stress. If you’re feeling stressed, this feeling will disappear after exercise.    3    Because it helps reduce the level of the “stress hormone” which leaves you feeling tired and stressed.

4    If you take regular exercise, you’ll find the results last longer too. So over time, you’ll have a higher ability to stay focused while completing tasks if you exercise regularly.

Improve your memory. According to a study by the University of British Columbia, regular exercise increases the size of the hippocampus (a part of the brain).    5

So, it is clear to see that there are many different benefits regular exercise can have. With these benefits for the mind, there now shouldn’t be any excuse not to start and lead an active, balanced life.

A.Increase your focus.
B.Increase your sense of self-worth.
C.Regular exercise keeps your mind calm.
D.They fill you with positive and happy feelings.

7 . Nowadays, Tai Chi has already spread throughout the world and is practiced by millions of people. It’s a major division of Chinese martial art.     1     It involves slow movements with a focus on breathing and on what your body is doing in that moment. There are four reasons to try Tai Chi.

It’s easy on the body.

Tai chi is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. It is low-impact, meaning there is minimal risk of damage to your joints.     2     It’s an exercise that can be easily adapted for less able people, including those in wheelchairs.

Falls could be prevented.

A 2019 review of studies suggested that Tai Chi might reduce the risk of falls in older people.     3     It also improves flexibility and spatial awareness.

    4

Tai Chi may boost brain power. Studies have found that regular Tai Chi can improve cognitive functioning in older people with dementia(痴呆)and without. Given that it’s considered safe and suitable for the elderly, this is a definite win. It also has the feel-good factor. A reduction in stress and anxiety, and increased confidence, are other mental health benefits of Tai Chi, according to research, though further research is needed.

9 . Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go playing some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research,   it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管),   including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “while we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the   brain.”

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can result from a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.

Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a shortterm memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies   exercise for older people should not be too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as with yoga or taichi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.

1. What is the connection between exercise and brain   development?
A.Exercise helps make our blood vessels.
B.Physical exercise helps us think better.
C.Exercise prevents us having brain diseases.
D.More physical exercises enlarge our brains.
2. How can exercise affect babies?
A.Whether they are excited or not depends on movements.
B.A lack of movement results from their learning disabilities.
C.The more frequently they move, the cleverer they become.
D.The more activities they do, the greater their brains develop.
3. Why is yoga suggested for seniors?
A.It helps them memorise quicker.
B.It decreases the heart rate.
C.It includes learning new actions.
D.It can be done in groups.
4. What is the smallest amount of exercise required to gain any benefit?
A.3 hours per week.B.4.2 hours per week.
C.1 hour per day.D.40 hours per month.
