文章大意:本文为说明文。美国是一个十分热爱体育运动的国家,大多数的运动项目都具有季节性。文章主要介绍了棒球、足球、篮球以及赛马等运动项目。

1 . The United States is a sports-loving nation. Sports in America take various forms: organized competitive struggles, athletic games, hunting and fishing. Most sports are seasonal, so that what is happening in sports depends upon the time of year.

Baseball is the most popular sport in the US. It is played throughout the spring and summer, and professional baseball teams play well into the fall.

Football is the most popular sport in the fall. The game originated as a college sport more than 75 years ago. It’s not the same as European football or soccer. In American football there are 11 players as well on each team, and they are dressed in padded uniforms and helmets because the game is rough and injuries are likely to occur. It is still played by almost every college and university in the country.

Basketball is the winner sport in American schools and colleges. Like football, basketball originated in the US, many Americans prefer it to football because it is played indoors throughout the winter and because it is a faster game. And the famous NBA games are considered the best of this game.

Other sports attracting a great many people include wrestling, boxing and horse racing. Although horse-racing fans call themselves sportsmen, the exactness of the term is questionable, as only the jockeys who ride the horses in the races can be considered athletes. The so-called sportsmen are the spectators, who do not come primarily to see the horses race, but to bet (打赌) upon the outcome of cach race. Gambling is the attraction of horse racing.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章根据迈克赤脚跑步的经历和医学分析,赤脚跑步能平衡身体,治疗膝盖疼痛,对身体有益。

2 . “Barefoot Mike” gets a lot of attention when he shows up at the beginning of a race. He loves to run and has been running since he was a kid. He loves to and often competes in 10K races. But That’s not the reason he gets so much attention. People notice him because when he runs, “Barefoot Mike” runs barefoot.

Running barefoot has become a huge trend in the world of running. “I didn’t set out to be a trend setter,” laughed “Barefoot Mike”, otherwise known as Mike Whitaker. “I’ve always been a runner, but until a few years ago, I always wore shoes. Then one day I was running after a rainstorm. I stepped off into the grass to avoid a puddle (水坑) on the sidewalk, and accidentally stepped into a huge muddy puddle that had been hidden in the grass. I tried to keep running, but the wet and dirty shoe made it really hard. I figured the best solution was to just get rid of the shoes.”

Mike took off his shoes and dropped them into the nearest trash can. “Then I started running. At first I went really slowly because I was watching out for rocks or other things that could hurt my feet, but there really weren’t any problems.” He started going faster. “It felt so good!” Mike said. “My knee, which always ached, didn’t ache. My foot was able to spread out so I had better balance. And my feet didn’t feel all hot and sweaty. It was awesome!”

“There are actually potential health benefits to running barefoot” said Dr. Nancy Bower, a podiatrist (足科医师).

A recent study agrees. A team of researchers recently videotaped several people running—first wearing shoes and then barefoot. In almost every case, when wearing shoes, the runners tended to land on the heel of their foot, which they call “heel-striking.” Many runners have impact injuries such as knee pain. Heel-striking may be the cause of these injuries or may make an existing injury worse. When running barefoot, the runners tended to land on the middle part of the foot. The force is spread out throughout the foot. The ankle, shin (胫部), knee and hip don’t get the shock of a hard landing with every step.

1. Why does Mike receive a lot of attention while running?
A.Because he runs very fast.B.Because he loses his shoes.
C.Because he wears no shoes.D.Because he wears strange clothes.
2. According to Paragraph 2, why did Mike run barefoot years ago?
A.He liked running barefoot.
B.He was advised to run barefoot.
C.His shoe became very uncomfortable.
D.His dream of becoming famous motivated him.
3. After running barefoot for a while a few years ago, Mike ________.
A.was very tiredB.was badly hurt
C.gave up runningD.felt unexpectedly great
4. According to the recent study, heel-striking ________.
A.is bad for one’s health
B.is caused by existing injuries
C.happens when one runs barefoot
D.can be avoided by wearing sports shoes
5. What is the text mainly about?
A.How to choose shoes.B.Why people need shoes.
C.Useful tips on running barefoot.D.The advantages of running barefoot.

3 . Fiona Kolbinger, a 24-year-old cancer researcher From Germany with little experience in competitive cycling, took the world by surprise when she became the first female to win the Transcontinental Race this year. She surpassed 225 men and 39 women to finish about 2,485 miles’ race from Bulgaria to France in 10 days, two hours, and 48 minutes.

“When I was coming into the race, I never thought I could win the whole race,” Kolbinger said. While the cyclist’s unexpected victory shocked people worldwide, she’s unimpressed. Despite resting an average(平均) of just four hours a night throughout the ten-day period, Kolbinger says, “I think I could have gone harder. I could have slept less.”

Now in its seventh year, the Transcontinental Race was founded by the late British ultra-cyclist Mike Hall. The race requires not only racers’ biking skills and endurance(耐力), but also their route planning and time management skills. “Riders plan, research and lead their own course and choose when, where and if to rest,” the Transcontinental Race’s website explains. “They’ll take only what they can carry and eat only what they can find.”

Unlike other cycling competitions where the routes are carefully laid out, the Transcontinental Race requires riders to make a map of their own course. The only requirement is to check in at four stops, located at different points along the way. To make sure all competitors experience some of the same challenges, each checkpoint is followed by strict terrain(地形).

The event’s difficulty has meant previous winners have all been experienced ultra-cyclists. Given that this was Kolbinger’s first try at endurance racing, her victory shocked many. However, it didn’t surprise Björn Lenhard, who trained with her for the race in Dresden, Germany. The ultra-cyclist said, “Fiona is so strong. What’s more, she’s a complete rider. Yes, you need to be strong, but in this race, you have to be able to think, to plan, to fix your bike if you have to.”

1. What does the underlined word “surpass” in the first paragraph mean?
A.Treated.B.Encouraged.
C.Helped.D.Beat.
2. What is the requirement for the cyclists of the Transcontinental Race?
A.They have to be experienced.
B.They have to be smart enough.
C.They have to be self-supporting.
D.They have to ride along the given roads.
3. What is the difference of the Transcontinental Race from other races?
A.It requires cyclists to go through at least four terrains.
B.It requires cyclists to plan courses alone.
C.It is much fairer than other races.
D.It needs to be carefully laid out.
4. What does Björn Lenhard think of Fiona Kolbinger’s victory?
A.It is expected.B.It is encouraging.
C.It is shocking.D.It is rewarding

The marathon welcomes 8, 000 people every fall. It’s a great event for first-timers because everyone is cheered on with enthusiasm no matter how long it takes to cross the finish line. The time limit for the full marathon is now at a pace of minutes per mile, or 6 hours and 33 minutes, but in the past it had an open time limit. They promise you’ll still receive your medal if you fall behind the pace, but you have to finish using the sidewalks.

10 . Have you ever tried skiing?     1     Skis are long, mostly flat pieces of metal, wood, or plastic. Skiers attach them to their shoes and use them to get over snow, often down a mountain slope. Nordic skiing and Alpine skiing are major events of the Winter Olympic.

Nordic skiing started in Norway and other countries of north Europe.     2     Cross-country skiing takes place on open, hilly land. A cross-country skier must be able to ski uphill, downhill, and cross flat areas. As for a ski-jumping competition, the skier gets down a steep ramp (斜坡) that curves upward at the end. The skier leaps off the end and tries to “fly” as far as possible and then lands on his or her feet.     3

4     Alpine events include downhill and slalom racing. Downhill racing is the fastest and most dangerous of all skiing events. The skiers go down a long, steep course that may have large bumps (隆起物). Along the course are gates formed by single poles or pairs of poles. The skier must ski between them and stay on the course. The winner is the skier who completes the course in the shortest time. Slalom racing is similar to downhill racing. However, a slalom course is shorter and more winding (蜿蜒的) than a downhill course.     5

A.It requires the skier to make high-speed turns.
B.Alpine skiing started in the Alps of central Europe.
C.Skiing is a winter sport that involves the use of skis.
D.The skier who leaps the farthest and has the best style is the winner.
E.Nordic skiing events include cross-country racing and ski jumping.
F.The skier races over and around large bumps of snow called moguls.
G.They are allowed to touch gates with their bodies as long as their skis stay on the course.
