3 . For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.

4 . Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park. A small psychology study suggests urban(城市的) environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. A walk through nature, on the other hand, appears to ease your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive (认知的)tiredness and improve reaction times straight away. The study, which includes two experiments with two different approaches, was conducted among 65 university students in the lab.
The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a 15-metre room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene. After each walk, participants were asked to rate their feelings of discomfort in the visual environment. On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported more discomfort and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.
The second experiment dug into some of the higher-level cognitive processes that might be at play. In the trial, participants were asked to distinguish between basic visual shapes on the computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image(the same ones from the first experiment). Measuring reaction times in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes. The authors think this is because urban environments are more distracting(令人分心的) for our brains and take longer to process, but more research is needed to prove that idea.

I always prided myself on my sharp tongue and witty (妙趣横生的) retorts (反驳), whether in class debates or casual arguments. So when it came time to represent my school in the national debate series, I was naturally very confident. But this challenge would turn out to be one of my life's most important lessons.
The run-up to the finals was a breeze for my team. We were all good speakers who had the benefit of an experienced teacher who trained us well. But in the team, I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in, I had always been selected as the best speaker. This meant that my confidence was at an all-time high by the time we found ourselves with one week left to train before the finals. I had no reason to even think that I would not be voted the overall best speaker for the debate series.
But then I began to grow arrogant. I looked down on my teammates’ pathetic retorts and poor debating style. I thought myself a natural debater being pulled down by their bad performance. In response, I became sloppy (不认真的). I even began missing practices, much to the panic of my teammates and the frustration (沮丧) of my teacher. They could only hope I'd pull through in the end as I proved irreplaceable.
The day of the finals came. I was nearly skipping to the venue, ready to finally show off my debating prowess (杰出的技能). But the reality was not something I could have ever imagined. Due to my repeated absences, our teamwork was so bad that even our school supporters were shamed into silence. There was a rift (分歧) in the team. When it was my turn to conclude as speaker, an expectant hush (寂静) fell over the hall. I was the one meant to win the prized title of Overall Best Speaker.

Considering all the health benefits of being physically active, it’s easy to see why doing exercise is wise. And the great thing is that it’s never too late to start.
However, sometimes you may find it hard to keep exercising regularly. One of the biggest reasons people drop an exercise program is a lack of interest. If what you’re doing isn’t fun, it’s hard to keep it up.

9 . Thousands of runners did up their running shoes and poured out from the starting line while crowds cheered along the course. Marathons in China are picking up the pace again.
According to the Chinese Athletics Association, a total of 133 marathons across the country have been registered for the first six months of the year. On March 26, more than 300,000 runners took part in 26 marathon events nationwide, reported China Daily.
Teenagers have also taken part in marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old teenager from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon held on April 2.
For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He ran about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week ahead of the run. “Compared with the 800-meter run at school which is more about speed, a marathon tests a runner’s endurance (耐力) and psychological quality,” he told Teens. When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long-distance running, the only opponent you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Apart from one’s willpower, kindness from the audience also plays a big part in helping runners get to the finishing line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The support from the people cheering along the course really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people from across the world cheered me on. Even if it was just the words ‘keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and I was inspired to keep going to the end,” Li told Teens.
She believes that running a marathon is about staying focused on the final goal, not the suffering along the way. “Likewise, our life is also a marathon,” Li said.
