1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完成的短文。

In the big forest, there lived many animals. There was a beautiful hare who was very good at running. She almost won all the running races, so she became very proud. Tortoise was the slowest in the forest. When other animals met him on the way, they always offered help, “Where are you going? Do you need a ride?” The tortoise would always answer them politely, “No, thank you. As long as I keep on crawling, I will get to my place finally.”

One morning, the hare saw the tortoise nearby. He was crawling slowly. The rabbit wanted to make fun of him. So she jumped toward the tortoise and said, “Tortoise, why don’t we have a race?” The tortoise thought for a while and said, “OK, let’s have the race now.” hearing this, the hare couldn’t help laughing. Then she pointed to the big tree at the foot of the hill and said, “All right, we’ll start from here. Let’s see who will get to that tree first.” The tortoise nodded in agreement.

The magpie flew around the forest. She told everybody the news. Everyone came to watch the race. They invited the squirrel brothers to be the judges. Younger brother squirrel stood at the starting line, and elder brother squirrel waited at the finishing line.

“Ready! Go-” younger brother squirrel ordered. “The hare ran forward very fast. The hare is so fast! The tortoise has no chance to win!” the animals said. Soon afterwards, the hare had left the tortoise far behind. She thought, “The tortoise racing with the rabbit, what a joke! I’ll teach him a lesson.” At this moment, the hare saw a big tree on one side of the road. She thought, “The tortoise is so far away behind me. Why not take a rest? I will let him go ahead. Then I can catch up with him in one jump. Everybody will know that I am really fast.” so, the hare stopped running and jumped toward the big tree. She sat down, closed her eyes, and fell asleep.

The tortoise was still crawling forward very slowly. The animals yelled at him, “The hare may have reached the finishing line by now. You can’t win.” “No matter what, I will keep crawling and get to the finishing line,” the tortoise answered.

2 . It’s OK to run when it’s cold outside. But is it OK to run when you have a cold? Many runners find the activity addictive Running releases endorphins (脑内啡) into the brain, which are responsible for mood changes. The harder you run, the more endorphins released, and the happier you are. Some studies show this endorphin rush allows people to continue running even when injured or sick.

And that brings us to the point of this article—why people continue their running even when they’re sick. Most of us curl up in bed with some chicken soup and the remote control when we’re under the weather. But runners often hit the road. Are they helping or hurting themselves by jogging with a cold?

The best way to decide whether you should exercise is to employ what doctors call the “neck check”. Feel free to go running if your cold is “above the neck”. Doctors advise against proceeding with your exercise if your sufferings are “below the neck”.

Some people think that running in cold temperatures will actually make them sick. But this isn’t really true. You can’t freeze your lungs or windpipe (气管). Your body heats the air you breathe. When the air is particularly cold, you may feel a burning in your chest as you breathe. If that’s the case, try covering your mouth with a scarf or wearing a ski mask. That’ll help heat up the air before you breathe it in.

Keep in mind, if you have an infection (感染) in your chest or throat, running outside can indeed make things worse. But if you have a simple head cold, it would be fine to take that run, even if it’s cold outside.

1. Why do some people still go running even if they are not in good condition?
A.They’d like to keep their figures.
B.They don’t realize the harm it does.
C.They want to feel the pleasure it brings.
D.They enjoy the atmosphere of running with others.
2. What does the underlined word “proceeding” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Stopping.B.Working.C.Changing.D.Continuing.
3. What is the misunderstanding of running in cold weather?
A.It will make people ill.B.It will worsen people’s health.
C.It will burn your chest.D.It has nothing to do with people’s illness.
4. What can we learn from the text?
A.Running when suffering a cold can be harmful.
B.Running in cold weather makes people happier.
C.Lying in bed is what we all do when catching a cold.
D.Covering your mouth when running in cold weather frees you from a cold.

8 . Parents whose children show a special interest in a sport feel very difficult to make a decision about their children’s careers. Should they allow their children to train to become top sports men or women? For many children it means starting schoolwork very young, and going out with friends and other interests have to take a second place. It’s very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has to train five hours a day, even at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing.

Another problem is of course money. In many countries money for training is available from government for the best young sportsmen and women. If this help can not be given, it means that it is the parents who have to find the time and the money to support their child’s development and sports clothes, transport to competitions, special equipment, etc.

Many parents are worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles may be damaged by training before they are properly developed. Professional(专业的) trainers however, believe that it is only by training young that you can reach the top as a successful sports person. It is clear that very few people do reach the top, and both parents and children should be prepared for failure even after many years of training.
