2 . Discover the Huge Health Benefits of Strength Training

One of the best ways to stay fit and healthy as you age is to do strength and power training exercises. It is known that when you are in your thirties, you will begin to lose muscle mass. This loss actually contributes to achy joints, the increased risk of injury, and the “middle-age spread” we all fear. What’s more, the older you get, the faster muscle mass loses. It means that eventually, simple tasks like getting out of a chair and climbing stairs can become more difficult.

Strength training can help you build muscles, make you strong, increase your staying power and make everyday activities easier. By combining strength and power training exercises, you’ll not only get stronger, but also improve your reaction speed. As you grow older, that’s critical because it can help prevent falls. Here is a book, Strength and Power Training for All Ages, for your reference.

Common sense about fitness in the book:

·The key muscles to work for an injury-free body

·How to tell how much weight is suitable for you

·How to strengthen the bones most likely to break

·How to take pressure off your knees when walking or running

·Why you’ll want to apply heat to sore joints before you exercise

Four total body workouts in the book:

·Build bones

·Fight diseases

·Improve balance

·Strengthen muscles &Increase muscle power

Get a copy, start training, and then you’ll discover a whole new self.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

From the day Tony was born, Jeff refused to let his son’s disabilities hold him back. Tony has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), making it difficult for him to walk. Determined to show Tony that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete, when he was 15 years old, Jeff signed him up with Team Triumph, an organization that helps kids with disabilities engage in endurance sports.

“It gave me a new perspective on life, Tony said. He even dreamed of walking marathon one day. From then on, Tony became addicted to racing, and Jeff also wanted to be a part of it. Though Jeff had been a minor league baseball player, endurance (耐力) sports were new to him. He made up his mind to achieve Tony’s dream and started doing things he never dreamed about. He began waking up at 4 a. m. So he could run in the silent street while pushing Tony in a special wheelchair called a racing chair. Every morning, he drove himself to run increasingly longer distances. Soon, he and Tony were entering 5K races, then on to Iron-man triathlons.

Finishing the Iron-man competition in under 16 hours would be another dream for Jeff and Tony. The big day came. The race began with a 2.4-mile swim in the river. Jeff helped Tony into a kayak (皮船). With one end of a rope tied to a belt around his back and the other end to the kayak, Jeff eased himself into the water. Swimming while dragging another person is quite tough. The pair completed the swim in 90 minutes, and then it was on to the next leg; a 112-mile bicycle ride. Their custom-built bike had an additional seat in the back for Tony that faced backward.

After completing the demanding bike part in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the final leg of the race-a 26.2-mile marathon with Jeff pushing Tony in the racing chair. They’d been competing for 10 hours, with only 6 hours left for the race. The first 7 miles went smoothly.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

But at mile 19, Jeff began to worry they were going too slow.

6 . Parkour Around a City

There are many ways to travel within a city.    1     But no matter which way we travel, we have to follow the route the city planners laid down for us.

2     To them, there are no designed routes. There are no walls and no stairs they jump, climb and crawl to move across, through, over and under anything they find in their path.    3

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has noticed that this activity is drawing more and more people to it—there are 100,000 people taking part in parkour (跑酷) today in the UK alone, according to The Guardian and how it is helpful for people to be much stronger: It trains coordination and balance.    4

But parkour enthusiasts themselves don’t seem to be happy with the idea. They see parkour as “a lifestyle”.    5     Indeed, many do parkour just to escape the daily routine and experience the city in different ways. They see parkour as a way to express themselves through relaxing moves and creative routes while freeing themselves from the pressure.

It’s great that the FIG wants to develop a new sport and stay close to a new cultural form. But it would be greater if they knew that not everything in life is a competition.

A.The city is their playground.
B.We can walk, cycle, or take a bus.
C.Parkour is more interesting than you ever know.
D.Parkour began in France, back in 1988, in the suburbs of Paris.
E.However, Parkour enthusiasts sce the city in a completely different way.
F.For them, it is a competition against the conditions rather than just a sport,
G.So the FIG is thinking about recognizing parkour as a new sport and adding it to the Olympics by 2024.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了运动的起源、运动的好处以及运动的风险。

7 . Whether you run a race or bounce a basketball, you do it because it’s fun. Some scientists claim that play is a natural instinct, just like sleep.     1

Sports come in many shapes and sizes. Both team and individual sports have advantages and disadvantages. In a team sport such as soccer, you’re part of a group, struggling to be a winning team.     2     In an individual sport such as tennis, you’re usually concerned only about your own performance. That can make these sports more challenging.

There’s little doubt about the value of sports. We learn how to negotiate plans, settle disagreements, and monitor our attitude. Since organized sports are a hands-on, minds-on learning process, they stimulate our imagination, curiosity, and creativity.     3     For example, we use language during play to solve problems, and we use math skills to recognize averages and odds of each sports play.

In a perfect world, everyone would have fun playing sports.     4     Sports can cause broken bones, scrapes and bruises. They can also hurt us psychologically. When young children play self-initiated games such as hide-and-seek, misunderstandings and hurt feelings are part of the learning process.

Playing sports doesn’t mean you have to play on a school team. Few people have what it takes to be a professional athlete. But your school basketball coach or gymnastics teacher has found a way to make play their work. In doing so, they’ve found a profession best suited to their abilities.

5     There’s no better place to play and learn about the world than on a sports field.

A.But that’s not always the case.
B.Regardless of your sport, play to have fun.
C.Sports may have begun as a form of survival.
D.The skills we learn can be applied to school and work.
E.This might explain why sports are likely to be as old as humanity.
F.There are rules to obey, skills to learn, and strategies to carry out.
G.You must learn to get along with your teammates and share responsibility.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了近年来健身应用程序一直试图准确复制个人训练体验,并且许多应用程序将人工智能用于创建锻炼,但一些专家认为人工智能健身应用程序并不适用于所有人。

8 . Having a personal trainer is one of the best ways to stay on track with your workouts, push your limits and try new things. But it often costs more than $100 a class, and getting to and from the gym can take up a lot of time.

Over the past ten years, fitness apps have been trying to copy the personal training experience exactly, and in recent years many have included artificial intelligence (AI) to create workouts. A growing number of products offer personalized works that match your abilities, goals and equipment you have, which usually cost around $100 a year.

However, some experts warn that while AI fitness apps are useful for many exercisers, they’re not the right fit for everyone.

AI fitness apps create personalized training programs using information from personal users and the experiences of other users.

In the future, these apps could collect even more information to give ever more personalized feedback (反馈), said futurist David Brin. But, he added, more information doesn’t always lead to better advice. “What you need to consider is whether the advice will actually be good for you, in the long run,” he said.

Furthermore, computers can learn a lot about different workout routines, but they can’t yet create the social interactions that make the training successful, said Nikola Banovic, professor of computer science and engineering at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the University of Michigan.

The AI fitness apps we have now can’t offer encouragement or provide comfort on a bad day. “As humans, we need more than just the workouts that will get us to our goals,” Dr Banovic said. “We need to be encouraged — that’s something only a real trainer can do right now. It will be some time before AI training does this well.”

1. What is the main advantage of AI fitness apps over personal trainers?
A.Requiring less exercise equipment.
B.Offering coaching services at a lower price,
C.Creating more personalized training plans.
D.Providing a better personal training experience.
2. What may David Brin agree with?
A.Users should work harder to protect their personal information.
B.AI fitness apps should find more tools for collecting information.
C.Users should be careful with the advice offered by AI fitness apps.
D.AI fitness apps should be improved to meet the needs of every user.
3. What should future AI fitness apps focus on?
A.Setting achievable goals.
B.Adding live chat services.
C.Learning new workout routines.
D.Developing useful interactions.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How do AI fitness apps change the way you exercise?
B.Would an AI trainer be better than a real trainer?
C.Can AI trainers take the place of the real one?
D.How do experts feel about an AI trainer?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了一些关于锻炼的知识。

10 . With our already busy lives, finding time to exercise can feel like one more thing on our “to do” list. So maybe it would help if there was “a best time” to exercise? Could exercising at certain times help maximise our fitness goals?     1     No matter who you are, or when you like to work out, it is okey.

2     Many of us have more free time compared to later in the day, and it may therefore be easier for us to stick to a morning workout routine. A study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found that participants who exercised in the morning, increased their physical activity throughout the day, were less distracted by food, and slept better. Exercising on an empty stomach before breakfast could also burn more fat and increase metabolism.

So, good news is for early birds, but what if you’re not a morning person?     3     For example, your body’s ability to perform peaks in the afternoon, according to a 2010 study by the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. Also, in the afternoon and evening, your reaction time is quickest, and your heart rate and blood pressure are lowest, which reduce your chance of injury while improving performance.

But our bodies are different, after all, so the best time to exercise may be different too. A 2022 study from Skidmore College, New York, looked at exactly this question and the results showed that there are some differences. Want to reduce your blood pressure and you’re a woman? Exercise in the morning. Want to improve your heart health and you’re a man?     4     But, ultimately, the study found that there are clear benefits for both sexes to exercising at either time of day.

So what time is best?     5

A.Evening is better for you.
B.The answer is ‘yes’, but it’s easier than you think.
C.It seems the answer is: whatever time is best for you!
D.There are clear benefits to exercising in the morning.
E.You can hurt yourself by more exercising in the afternoon or evening.
F.Many people have more free time in the morning than later in the day.
G.Working out in the afternoon or evening also has benefits, just different ones.
