FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is now a hot blooded carnival for fans around the world for 28 days. It’s the first World Cup held by a country that has not participated in the World Cup before, and also the first time to be held in a Middle Eastern country.
First let’s talk about its mascot, La’eeb, shaped like a walking headscarf, is an avatar (化身) with no fixed shape. This Arabic word means a highly skilled player. The mascot wears a rope and is soft, whose body can make various and difficult movements at will-it gives fans full imagination. The design of the mascot is very novel and this playful image is loved by many fans. Its facial expression is full of determination with an inspirational, upward and positive attitude, just like a strong-willed athlete who never gets discouraged in the face of difficulties.
Considering the high temperature of about 50 degrees in Qatar in summer will affect the athletes’ competitive status, this World Cup is the first time to be held in the northern hemisphere in winter. To successfully hold this World Cup, Qatar has invested heavily in the construction of venues and supporting transportation, communication, accommodation, even with over 1,000 luxurious Bedouin-style tents in the desert, etc. Service facilities, with a total investment of 220bn US dollars, make it the most expensive World Cup game at present.
This World Cup will even be the very first carbon-neutral tournament, and the organizer has prepared a total of 8 stadiums, all built to be energy efficient. One of our favorites is Stadium 974, the first fully demountable (可拆卸的) stadium, built using 974 shipping containers, whose number also happens to be Qatar’s country code. The opening game and the final match will be held in the same stadium-Lusail Stadium. Moreover, thanks to Qatar’s efficient public transportation, football fans will need just under one hour of traveling time between stadiums. So if you want to, you can watch more than two games in one day and experience the World Cup like never before.
And the World Cup finale will take place on December the 18th, also Qatar’s National Day. So expect fireworks all around. And let’s have a blast together!

4 . The Andler Hillclimb is an annual dirt bike competition that has dirt bikers from around Europe try, to reach the top of a dangerous hillside course in Belgium. It’s been held every year for the last two decades, but so far, no one has been able to reach the top.
The so-called “impossible climb” starts out as rough gravel and then switches over to a rough uneven cliff (悬崖) face designed to throw riders off and roll them and their bikes back down to the base of the hill. It’s not the angle of the course that is the problem, according to most riders, but the sudden change of ride surface that makes keeping control of the bike and reaching the top so hard. Some fly off their bike early during the climb. While others get painfully close to the finish line, yet in the end they all succumb to the power of gravity (重力) before reaching their goal.
Despite gathering the most talented dirt bikers in Europe at the start line every year, the Andler Hillclimb has so far remained unconquered. The closest one to success was a Suzuki bike rider who once reportedly crossed the finish line with the front wheel before rolling back down the slope like the rest of the competitors. Sadly, his achievement didn’t count as a valid climb, as the entire bike and its rider must make it to the top of the hill.
With so many riders having failed to conquer the Andler Hillclimb over the last 20 years, why are people still trying every year? Why not just call the climb impossible and stop it? Well, maybe it has something to do with the bragging rights (胜者为王)? Can you imagine what it would be like to be the very first dirt biker to reach the top of this famous hill?
In case you want to try your luck, or if you simply want to see the hill make fools of dozens of daredevils (蛮干者), this year’s event is scheduled for August.

7 . Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, who won men’s singles Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018, said Tuesday he was retiring from competition.
He won the men’s singles gold at the Sochi Games in 2014 and again at the Pyeongchang Games in South Korea in 2018, becoming the first men’s skater to achieve consecutive (连续不断的) golds in the category since Dick Button in 1948 and 1952. At this year’s Winter Games in Beijing, he attempted to become the first man to complete a quadruple axel-4 rotations (旋转) in the air at the Olympics, a jump that he had previously come close to achieving in Japan. In Beijing, he came just short of completing the required rotations for the quadruple axel and fell on his rear, but he expressed satisfaction with his effort afterward and hinted he was ready to retire.
“In terms of how it feels for me, I don’t imagine it being all that different.” he said. “Of course, I feel strongly that I’d like to achieve success with the quadruple axel.”
Beyond his jumping ability, Hanyu’s gift for the dramatics and his gentle appearance made him popular among admirers. Some said he looked as if he had danced off the pages of a Japanese cartoon. They would throw Winnie the Pooh stuffed bears—reportedly his favorite cartoon character—on the ice after his performances. In China, crowds gathered outside the Beijing venue to express devotion to their favorite, and one Chinese follower on social media called Hanyu “the most beautiful icy fairy in my heart”.
In recent years, Hanyu has been suffering from injuries. He said he had constantly thought about retiring from competition since the 2018 Winter Games. “If we’re talking about when I considered turning professional. 8 . Kim Ja-in was born to climb. Her parents met and fell in love in the mountains. Her mother climbed, her father climbed, and both her elder brothers climbed. It was only natural that she would join them. But while she was the last to start, Kim outclimbed her family a long time ago — in fact, few others can climb to the same height as her.
Kim, 30, is a superstar of the sport climbing world. As a previous world champion, she faces a new challenge: the Olympics. At the Tokyo 2020, sport climbing appears for the first time. The competition will combine bouldering climbing (抱石攀岩), lead climbing and speed climbing. Kim is good at lead climbing, but Tokyo 2020 is throwing up new challenges. “I have to do speed climbing, which I’ve never done before,” she explained, “It has been hard recently because of that.”
As an ambassador (大使) for the sport, she’s gone to extreme lengths to raise climbing’s public attention in South Korea. In 2017, Kim climbed the 555-meter Lotte World Tower in Seoul. “I thought it would be a good way to let people know about sport climbing,” Kim said.
Kim has climbed for 19 years. She said, “I will take the Tokyo 2020 as a chance to prove myself.” She enjoys the chance to stand in front of a new wall and climb it for the first time. “When I finish a climb, that sense of achievement and joy are the biggest attraction,” she explained. “Climbing is everything to me.”

10 . If you’ve ever wondered who decides what sports to be included or left out at the Olympic Games, you’re probably not the only one, because the processes are a little complex and confusing.
It falls to the Executive Board of International Olympic Committee ( IOC ) to suggest which sports will be included and the rest of the IOC then votes according to a long list of standards: How much value the sport would add to the Olympic legacy (遗产); How long the sport has existed; How popular the sport is in the host country; How much it would cost to broadcast the events, and many other things.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games saw the inclusion of skateboarding, surfboarding, sport climbing and karate, all of which were selected by the IOC for the first time ever.
So, what contributes to å sport being left out? Having to limit the Games to a certain number of athletes, as well as scheduling needs can lead to some sports being left off the program, especially if they fall short of the above standards.
There’s perhaps no better example of this than softball and baseball. While both are included at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, it’s the first time they were included at Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The IOC voted them out from London 2012 Olympic Games. Officials said that neither sport had global attraction.
But it’s not just the IOC that has the say. The host city can also play a role in the decision, and push for a particular sport for the year that it is hosting. For a real-world example, look no further than the 2024 Games to be held in Paris, which will see the inclusion of breakdancing as an Olympic sport for the first time.
1. What does the second paragraph focus on?A.The voting process. | B.The advantages of IOC. |
C.The costs of the Games. | D.The selecting standards. |
A.Baseball. | B.Breakdancing. | C.Skateboarding. | D.Softball. |
A.It had too many players. | B.It had a short history. |
C.It was difficult to broadcast. | D.It was not popular enough. |
A.The athletes. | B.The Executive Board of IOC. |
C.The host cities. | D.International Olympic Committee. |
