1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I failed again. It was the day of the big marathon. I had decided three years ago to train for the half-marathon event and take home a medal. There I sat, in front of my TV, while I watched others cross the finish line. It was just another in a long string of failures. I had never met a single weight loss or fitness goal and I was majoring in the art of failing.

We are a family with the spirit of exploration. We often plan active vacations. It seemed that on every vacation I was the one who couldn’t go the distance. Each time I urged my family, “Go on without me. Bring me lots of pictures and videos. I’ll be fine just sitting here taking in the view.” I lied. Sick of being left behind, I decided that it would never happen again. As a teenager, surely, there was still hope for me. I always spent weeks walking to prepare for our active vacations. I had lost weight many times. I just always seemed to fail to get where I needed to be.

But this time I would do something different. I was going to walk a half marathon. Surely I would lose weight and get in shape if I could complete over 12 miles in four hours. Be-sides, this would be training. Training sounded cooler than diet and exercise. I was excited and ready to go. I bought the proper equipment and clothing, checked out what type of drinks would be handed out at the marathon and prepared a lot. I had a plan!

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍4个世界上最奇怪的比赛。

3 . Here’s a selection of the strangest races in the world.

Surf Dog Competition

Hundreds of participants (参赛者) from all over the US come to fight for the first prize. This annual event is an official dog surfing competition taking place in Imperial Beach in August and Huntington Beach in September. The attendance to the event is free of charge, however, donations are welcome.

Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race

If you think wheel toys are designed for kids only, you’re wrong. The race was initiated by John Brumit in 2000 when he rode down Lombard Street on his plastic wheel toy. That day, he was the only participant in the race. He continued his tradition every year, but few joined him. In 2006, someone posted a video of his race and as a result, the next year’s race featured hundreds of participants though there was no prize money. Since then, the annual race has been held on Easter Sunday in San Francisco.

World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

It’s an annual event held in June in Petaluma, California. But it’s not about making fun of the ugly dogs, but about encouraging them and showing the world that such dogs can also be happy and adorable. The competition has been held since the 1970s. The winner gets a check for $1,000.

Fur Rondy

Like the famous Spanish Bullfighting Festival, Alaska has its own tradition. It’s a bit transformed. Speedy reindeer (驯鹿) run after the participants in the race. This event is held every February in Anchorage, Alaska. Participants pay a small fee to attend it; some of them wear funny dresses, which children enjoy very much.

5 . Generation Z athletes have emerged in 2021 as global well-being leaders and advocates, challenging outdated ideas about what it takes to be an athlete. Many of these young sportspeople have gone beyond their sport. Through social media, they have opened up conversations about performance, mental health and the impact of the media.

Performing at the highest level can put huge amounts of pressure on young athletes. Simone Biles decided to put her mental health first at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics when she withdrew from an event.

The emergence of the athlete’s authentic voice during their career is new and growing. Social media has expanded and accelerated a properly authentic voice that is also more personal and openly political. These generation Z players, born into or at the top of the social media boom, can connect directly with their millions of followers on social media to share personal insights.

It is unusual for active athletes to be so transparent about their health — particularly, their mental health. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Biles made a rare exception. She used social media to explain an attack of the “twisties” and the impact on her performance and mental health. This disrupted the narrative of victory at all costs.

By taking control of their own stories, these athletes have broken the idea that top sports stars — with their extreme athleticism, dedication and seeming invincibility — are somehow superhuman. Elite athletes carry enormous burdens of responsibility and winning doesn’t come before everything else. As Simone Biles made clear: “We are not just entertainment. We are human.”

1. What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A.Generation Z athletes have become global leaders.
B.Some athletes don’t know what it takes to be an athlete.
C.Plenty of young athletes have lost their interest in sports.
D.Many young athletes air their views via social media.
2. Why did Simone Biles withdraw from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?
A.Mental stress.B.Poor performance.C.Mental disease.D.Young athletes.
3. What’s the author’s attitude toward Simone Biles?
A.Neutral.B.Favorable.C.Critical.D.Indifferent.
4. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.All that glitters is gold.B.Athletes should be supermen.
C.Victory isn’t everything for an athlete.D.Sports should be viewed as entertainment.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要阐述极限运动的优点。

6 . Extreme sports are appealing to more and more people.     1     Meanwhile,a decline has been noted in other traditional outside activities, including basketball. This is most likely linked to several factors like the positive mental and physical health aspects of participating in an extreme sport.     2

Extreme sports can push you to your physical and mental limits. Individuals who regularly undertake activities such as jumping out of an airplane actually change the chemical makeup of their mind. When this happens, they become more capable of staying calm and centered during stressful situations.     3

Extreme sports task you with overcoming difficult physical challenges.     4    Studies have found a strong link between extreme sports and a higher level of self-confidence. This makes sense when you consider the fact that accomplishing a task so physically daunting(令人畏缩的)is something that you should feel proud of.

5     Studies have even discovered that socialization is important for cognitive(认知的)functionality. This is another area where extreme sports receive high marks. Most of these activities are done with other people. For example, you're more likely to go skateboarding or jump out of a plane with a friend, which will help increase the bond between the two of you.

A.Humans are social creatures by nature.
B.It is true that there are many advantages of extreme sports.
C.Most extreme sports help you have a good sense of balance.
D.We all do certain movements during the day to strengthen muscles.
E.In other words, extreme sports help you develop the ability to stay concentrated.
F.If you can complete these challenges, your rewards will be much more than physical ones.
G.Actually, activities such as mountain biking and snowboarding continue to attract more people every year.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了空腹跑步的利弊。

7 . Running is an excellent form of aerobic exercise. It’s a convenient activity that can be tailored to your lifestyle and goals. Plus, a regular running routine can reduce your risk for disease.

Some people like to run on an empty stomach. They often do this in the morning, after at least 6 to 8 hours of overnight fasting. It’s sometimes called “fasted running”.

When you haven’t eaten, your glycogen (糖原) levels are low. Glycogen is the storage form of carbohydrates. It’s what your body primarily uses for energy.

Fasted running is most known for its amazing effect on fat burn. The idea is that your body uses more fat as energy because your carbohydrate stores are low. The result is higher fat burn, or “oxidation (氧化)”.

In a small 2015 study of 10 male participants, exercise increased fat oxidation over 24 hours when the workout was done before breakfast.

The same scientists found similar results in a small 2017 study with nine female participants. According to the researchers, this is due to the body’s response to low carbohydrate levels. The lack of carbs stimulates genes that control fat oxidation.

If you’re trying to lose weight, fasted exercise may help control your energy intake. In a small 2016 study, 12 male participants who ran on an empty stomach consumed less energy over 24 hours.

Another small 2019 study with 12 male participants found that fasted exercise lowered energy intake over 24 hours. The scientists attributed this to the liver, which also stores glycogen.

Yet, running on an empty stomach may not be safe for everyone. It might even hold back your fitness goals.

1. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “fasting” in Paragraph 2?
A.Staying up late.B.Not eating anything.
C.Lying awake.D.Accelerating your pace.
2. What is the author’s attitude toward fasted running?
A.Objective.B.Approving.
C.Doubtful.D.Critical.
3. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraph?
A.Examples of athletes who practice fasted running.
B.Further research on the benefits of regular running.
C.Harmful effects of running on an empty stomach.
D.Other benefits that fasted running can bring about.
4. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To present the research results concerning regular running.
B.To advise readers to run on an empty stomach every morning.
C.To raise readers’ awareness of the harmful effects of fasted running.
D.To inform the readers of the benefits and drawbacks of fasted running.

8 . It may be one of Britain’s most successful exports—Miss World. This 53-year-old event took place in China last week and attracted over 120 women worldwide with knockout looks in a mad struggle for the crown.

Traditional values have long kept the Chinese, especially women, from displaying beauty. But Chinese people have now changed their attitude towards beauty contest, although some men will still be shouting that the winner is no more beautiful than his wife or his former girl-friend or even his mother in a sour tone.    1    . The question to be asked is: why isn’t there a Mr. World Beauty Contest?

And a further question to be asked is: does taking part in a beauty contest show a woman’s courage, wisdom and liberation or rather the opposite—a forced choice and a revolting act made under conditions of long-term discrimination?

Organizers of such beauty contests claim that the contestants are judged on qualities other than just their physical appearance. But still no answer is given to why there isn’t a Mr. Beauty or a Mr. World Contest.    2    ? Why is it that only women’s “qualities” need to be recognized but not men’s?

Think about who is always standing beside a fancy car on show?    3    ? And this is how “qualities” are judged: if the girl looks good, there is little reason why the car beside her is not of high quality.

The beauty contests go on year after year, with winners enjoying fame which quickly disappears.    4    , what never changes is the routine practice that in every fancy car show, a girl stands beside a fancy car. What never changes is the need to hold a women’s conference every year to appeal for the promotion of respect for and improvement of women.    5    . So let’s put more time and resources into trying to change all this rather than holding beauty contests.

A.Or at least, why isn’t that kind of contest popular
B.While such events go on and on
C.Though a Mr. World Contest is also held
D.But such men are not shouting for the right reason
E.What never changes is the fate of women as a class
F.Is it a boy or a girl
G.Women were not allowed to show their beauty in China

10 . Japan's prime minister encouraged the decision to ban viewers, even family members, by issuing a state of emergency order in Tokyo earlier this month in response to rising COVID-19 case numbers.

From the perspective of sports psychologists, an Olympics without fans is a real-life science experiment that is helping researchers and clinicians to comb through the true impact of a crowd of fans on its players—and on viewers at home. The strange circumstances under which the games are held may place unexpected pressure on some athletes. On Tuesday, superstar gymnast Simone Biles dropped out of the women's team event, telling teammates and reporters she wasn't in the right “headspace” to compete. “It's been really stressful this Olympic Games. There are a lot of different variables going into it,” Biles told the Washington Post.

The 2020 Summer Olympics bears similarities and differences to other major sporting events without viewers. The English Premier League supplemented (增加) game broadcasts with crowd noise from the soccer video game FIFA 20, mixed with game audio in real time. A Taiwanese baseball team and German soccer team began populating stands with cardboard cutouts of fans, and the trend caught on internationally.

Jamey Houle, the lead sports psychologist for Ohio State University Athletics and a former Al-American gymnast, says competitive athletes are trained in visualization— imagining performing a certain action or motion, such as doing a roundoff back handspring in gymnastics. Without moving a muscle, players using visualization can solidify neural (神经的) connections and activate their motor cortex (皮层). To visualize most effectively, Houle says, athletes working with sports psychologists will try to simulate as closely as possible the conditions of actual gameplay. Empty stadiums may thus have a measurable impact on players' performance. This phenomenon is grounded in a psychological concept called “social facilitation”, referring to a change in a person's performance that occurs when others are around compared to when a person is alone.

1. What caused Biles to drop out of the women's team event?
A.The poor physical condition.B.The absence of the audience.
C.The fiercely competitive event.D.The influence of crowds of fans.
2. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.The Taiwanese baseball team is a success.
B.The tendency mentioned is popular among some sporting events.
C.The 2020 Summer Olympics is stricter in preventing the pandemic.
D.The crowd noise plays a leading role in the English Premier League.
3. How does Houle explain the impact of empty stadiums on players' performance?
A.By doing a roundoff back handspring.B.By simulating the conditions of actual gameplay.
C.By using the concept called social facilitation.D.By changing the viewers of a player.
4. What message does the author mainly convey in the text?
A.Athletes should be trained in visualization.B.Audience should be admitted to the Olympics.
C.Social facilitation is helpful to sporting events.D.Viewers present may influence players' performance.
