文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Ken Campbell如何在晚年成为一名超级长跑运动员的经历。

1 . The last attempt of Ken Campbell to run could date back to high school. When his wife, Susan, injured her foot, she needed support to rejoin her running group, so Campbell went along to keep her company in the recovery. “We were just walking at the beginning,” he says, “I was heavy, and weighed over 90kg.” But as the weeks and months passed, the weight fell away, Susan recovered and Campbell’s abilities grew. At the age of 63, he ran 50 km, and at 70, he completed a 100 km ultramarathon (超长距离马拉松赛跑).

So how does someone with no experience of running become an ultradistance runner in his 60s and 70s? Susan had run marathons (马拉松比赛) before her injury, but for Campbell, the turning point came when Susan’s Fleet Feet running group started training near their home.

Campbell went out to visit Susan’s group, and “the paths were a terrible mess. It had been raining, and I was slipping, sliding and falling. But I thought, well, I like this a lot.” What he liked above all was the feeling of “being wrapped by the path, being hugged by the closeness of the plants and the nearness of the river”.

Running the 100 km ultramarathon took Campbell 16 hours. When Campbell crossed the finish line, Susan handed him a 100 km sticker to display on the back of his truck. “It is a public statement that you are part of this community,” he says. “Wherever we park, I see a line of vehicles with their various stickers and I feel that we are a community.”

Campbell suffered from arthritis before he started running, and was “waiting for knee replacement”, but for now, he no longer needs an operation. It can put an end to the running—but the “sense of wellbeing and achievement will carry me on forever,” he says, “If I can’t run, I will walk.”

1. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.Why Campbell attempted to run marathon.
B.What led to Campbell’s weight loss.

D.What Campbell did for Susan’s recovery.
2. What was the turning point for Campbell?

C.Falling down when training.D.Susan’s starting training.
3. What did the 100 km sticker mean to Campbell?

4. What can we learn from the passage?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了瑞士的一项研究发现,对于青少年来说,每周进行14小时的体育活动最有益于健康,而超过这个时间则可能对他们的健康产生负面影响。

2 . Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in various sports is good for their health. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport.

Researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that 14 hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than 14 hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than 1,245 teenagers aged between 16 and 20 from Switzerland.

All participants were required to answer questions on height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being. Their well-being was assessed (评估) using the World Health Organization (WHO) Well-Being Index, and the average well-being score for all participants was 17.

The researchers divided sports participation into low (0 — 3.5 hours a week), average (3.6 — 10.5 hours), high (10.6 — 17.5 hours), and very high (more than 17.5 hours). The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below 13, compared with participants in the average group. The researchers   found that the highest well-being scores were gotten by participants who carried cut around 14 hours of physical activity a week, but exercising beyond 14 hours resulted in lower well-being scores.

Commenting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been connected with positive emotional well-being, reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-respect in teenagers.

The researchers suggest that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about their well-being. Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being. The findings can provide information for guideline groups who produce recommendations on sports practice for teenagers.

1. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Useless.B.Important.C.Reasonable.D.Harmful.
2. What do the researchers find out?
A.Low sports participation causes overweight.
B.The sports participation is divided into four levels.
C.The highest well-being scores are gotten in the “high” group.
D.The average well-being score of teenagers between 16 and 20 in Switzerland is 17.
3. Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A research paper.B.A health magazine.C.A business report.D.A fitness diary.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Measures to improve teenagers’ well-being.
B.Concerns of physicians about teenagers’ well-being.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了新的研究表明,运动可以减少和预防人们患抑郁症的可能性,甚至是有遗传风险的人。

3 . For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic (遗传的) risk, new research shows.

For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.

Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”

Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.

1. How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
A.By analyzing a mass of data.B.By conducting genetic research.
C.By comparing various levels of activity.D.By tracking the subjects for many years.
2. What does the study show about depression?
A.Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B.Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C.Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D.Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
3. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Harmful.B.Unusual.C.Common.D.Complex.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To discuss a disease of depression.B.To explain a phenomenon of depression.
C.To analyze a genetic risk of depression.D.To introduce a method to lower the risk of depression.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了健美运动员Kanazawa退役后一度养成不健康的生活方式,后来为了取悦妻子重新锻炼,老年又获得成功的故事。

5 . Most people in their eighties would consider themselves lucky not to have health problems, but this is not the case with Toshisuke Kanazawa. The 82-year-old Japanese bodybuilder is not only in perfect physical condition, but also looks better than a lot of men a quarter his age.

Kanazawa is a living example that you’re never too old to hit the gym and achieve the body you’ve always dreamed of. A champion bodybuilder in his youth, Kanazawa stopped exercising completely after he retired(退休) at age 34, drinking, smoking and eating whatever he liked. It wasn’t until he turned 50 that he wanted to regain the perfect body of his younger years.

Kanazawa’s wife felt sick frequently, and the former bodybuilder remembered that she had never been happier than when he won the national championship. So, to please her, he decided to return to the gym and completely change his diet.

His workout schedule had to change according to his age. In his youth, he would spend up to six hours training in the gym every day, and his body would recover within two days after a particularly intensive workout, but that was not the case anymore. He cut the daily gym time to three hours and started giving his body one week to recover after exercising every muscle group.

Kanazawa’s efforts paid off. In 2016, at the age of 80, Kanazawa defeated many opponents and placed sixth in the world in a match for bodybuilders over 65, and won the admiration of the crowd.

Sport keeps this elderly man healthy, as he has not suffered so much as a cold since he started bodybuilding again at age 50.

“I want to be a super old man in the bodybuilder community,” Kanazawa said, “If I have a goal, I can continue moving forward. I have to work much harder.”

1. What can we learn about Kanazawa from paragraph 2?
A.He started bodybuilding at the age of 34.
B.He seldom exercised when he was young.
C.He had serious health problems in his youth.
D.He developed an unhealthy lifestyle after he retired.
2. Why did Kanazawa decide to take up exercise again?
A.To make a livingB.To help change his diet.
C.To cheer up his wife.D.To recover from illness.
3. What did old Kanazawa do while rebuilding his body?
A.He went on a diet.
B.He turned to the doctor for advice.
C.He combined relaxation with exercise.
D.He spent up to six hours training every day.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Bodybuilding: No Age Limit
B.Champion: The Result of Workout
C.Understanding: A Secret to Happiness
D.Exercise: The Best Medicine for Illnesses

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了步行作为最佳锻炼方式之一,不仅对身体和心理健康有益,还是创造力的一个元素。

6 . Walking has been considered as one of the best possible exercises. For many people, daily walking offers many and long-term physical and mental benefits.     1     A Stanford University study found that participants were more creative when walking as opposed to sitting.    2    You’ve probably heard the phrase “exercise your innovation (创新)”. Our creative mindset is caused by physical movement, which is exactly why walking with your dog, a friend, or alone feeds creative thinking.

But the scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your habitual surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighborhood.     3

Walking outside develops our ability to collect new ideas and take in new sights, sounds, smells, and flavors. Shinrin-yoku, a common form of relaxation in Japan, suggests that being in the forest and walking among the trees there can lower your stress levels    4     Research has shown that immersion (沉浸) in nature around your neighborhood or the disconnection from multimedia increased performance on a creative problem-solving task.

So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking outdoors?     5     For example, you can turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in a lake.

Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder.

A.Unfortunately, you often fail to do it.
B.Engage more closely with your surroundings.
C.The movement aspect of walking is obviously key
D.Without enough energy, you cannot wonder or create.
E.But to receive the benefits, you do not have to live in a forest.
F.This habit, however, isn’t just improving your health but an element of creativity.
G.You can also wander around a park and observe people relaxing or birds singing.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一个旨在促进学生全面发展的户外教育项目以及一些学生的反馈。

8 . With increasing information through technology, our students are becoming less active and do not develop relationships with self, others and the environment. Outdoor Education does not only promote physical development in students but it also focuses on each of their personal, social and self-awareness development.

That is what the Outdoor Education Programme (OEP) at Marymount Convent School aims to do. The most interesting part of Marymount’s OEP is the adventure camp that helps students to grow in determination and courage as they deal with challenges. The adventure camp provides an opportunity for the students to learn more about basic survival skills, respect and responsibility for self, others and environmental awareness.

For the energetic ones, like Sofia-Jane Wong Enqi, the activities in OEP are a dream come true. She loves activities such as hiking and team-building activities. During hiking, the primary 6 student learnt the value of cooperation (合作) instead of competition. She discovered how easy it was for her and her teammates to complete challenges when people were not fighting to take the lead but instead stopping and listening to each other.

Another primary 6 student, Mithra Anandan, got an even greater benefit while hiking. She had never been very interested in physical activities but as she joined her friends on a hike, she learnt to continue despite having to stop for breaks. Working hard to reach the end of the hike taught her the value of adaptation even if others can go farther or faster. It is not about a race; it is about completing and enjoying a journey.

Their parents also observed clear improvements in their children’s self-management and responsibility. “My parents praised me for my positive change in character and of course, I had burnt a good amount of calories!” says Mithra laughingly. Sofia-Jane adds: “Days after I returned from the camp, my mom said that I became more independent, cleaning up after my meals and doing my homework without being reminded.”

1. What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A.Promoting the all-round development of students.
B.Increasing students’ knowledge of technology.
C.Helping students enjoy their love of adventure.
D.Letting parents take part in outdoor activities.
2. What did Sofia-Jane say about hiking?
A.It taught her basic life skills.
B.It improved her self-management skills.
C.It helped her know the importance of cooperation.
D.It raised her awareness of the environment.
3. What benefit did Mithra gain while hiking?
A.Strong physical strength.B.A competitive spirit.
C.Great determination.D.A sense of responsibility.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.How to survive in the wild
B.Why students love adventure camps
