3 . Using the health records of more than a million Swedish conscripts (应征入伍者), a recent study revealed that keeping cardiorespiratory (心肺的) fitness in their late teens and early twenties can cut the risk of developing nine types of cancer by 40% when older. The research team from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden said, “These results could be used to further strengthen the promotion of interventions aimed at increasing fitness in youth.”
Almost a third of people aged from 16 to 24 in England aren’t physically active, without meeting guidelines of at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week including walking, riding a bike and dancing.
Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) measures how well the heart, lungs and linked systems work to get oxygen to muscles during constant activities. The conscripts, aged between 16 and 25, had tests of CRF on exercise bikes between 1968 and 2005. The researchers used Swedish health data to see who went on to have cancer during an average follow-up of 33 years. The study found that increasing fitness was beneficial, regardless of body weight. However, they also found that higher fitness was linked to a higher risk of skin cancer. The researchers explained that this trend might be driven by exposure to sunlight.
Findings from those observational studies provide much evidence for a link between higher levels of physical activity and a lower risk of cancer. However, these studies cannot fully rule out the possibility that active people have lower cancer risk because they engage in other lifestyle behaviors. The researchers cautioned that they had no access to full data on factors such as diet, alcohol intake and smoking and so couldn’t fully account for those.
Dr Claire Knight, of Cancer Research UK, said, “The NHS recommends 150 minutes of activity a week, but it’s fine to build up activity over time and there are lots of ways to be more active. You don’t need to run a marathon or join a gym. Anything that gets you warmer and slightly out of breath and your heart beating faster counts.”

4 . Endless studies show the physical, mental and longevity-based benefits of working out, while plenty suggest that avoiding activity is bad. But headlines about someone collapsing after a row always stick in the mind. So, how risky is training too hard?
The NHS recommends that healthy adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity — but doesn’t suggest where to stop. This is because the ability to handle excess exertion (过度努力) depends on many varied factors.
The exact cause of “overtraining”, in the sense of doing too much over an extended period, is still being debated.
The best advice is to pay attention when you lack energy or feel unwell and back off a bit. If you are a runner, this can also help with the common complaint of shin splints (胫骨骨膜炎), or more serious stress fractures, which are tiny cracks in the bone itself. The latter, which can be due to a sudden increase in training intensity, won’t heal until you ease off.
“The obvious risk factors are linked to impact and exertion,” says Steve Hoyles, a personal trainer and gym owner. “Running is a high-impact activity and analysis shows that inexperienced runners suffer an average of 17.8 injuries per 1,000 hours, whereas in gym users the average is 5.3 injuries per 1,000 hours.
A.The story is similar for men and women at risk of stroke. |
B.So do your best to avoid them by not pushing too hard, or too fast. |
C.Some experts theorise that it’s all about the central nervous system. |
D.Swimming and cycling are low-impact but offer limited strength benefits. |
E.And is there a way to make sure you never cross that red line into dangerous territory? |

G.Exercise will improve your quality of life and almost certainly your chances of living longer. |

7 . Sports is one of the purest concepts developed. For some, sports is a hobby, others an escape, but for Jason Hills, Post Media Edmonton part-time writer, sports is everything.
At a young age, watching countless hours of sports allowed Hills to process and develop an escape to deal with the childhood painful experience of losing both his parents in a car accident. With so much inside his head, sports provided him with the outlet that millions of people employ daily: being enveloped into “the game.”
Later, as Hills grew into a young man, he began to become involved with school sports. As Hills began to play, the concept of being involved with a university team came into a dream.
Following high school graduation, Hills realized that university athletics might not be in the cards, but was still very determined to have sports play a major role in his life. So he attended Lethbridge College for its Journalism Diploma program. Since then, Hills has been a major component of university athletics coverage in Edmonton for over 10 years. Spending long hours travelling to back and forth across the North Saskatchewan River covering all the postsecondary teams, Hills is Postmedia’s go-to reporter in Edmonton for everything amateur sports.
Hills is a story teller. Though his articles include features, game recaps (简报)and series previews, all of his work showcases university student-athletes like no one else in the City of Edmonton. Hills stands out and stands above many, with an extraordinary ability to capture the athletes’ true voice. By putting himself in their shoes, Hills empathizes (有同感) with the student-athletes by telling their story, bringing a truly human element to the piece.
“My grandma told me when I was young, no matter what you do in life, just do what makes you happy,” Hills recalls.“This type of job and this type of career, you’re not going to make millions in it. You have to do it because you love it and because you’re passionate about it.”

9 . Some people prefer to have a bite to eat before hitting the gym, known as a fed workout. Others would like to wait until after exercising to refuel their bodies, called a fasted workout.
If you want energy and strength for an ideal workout, you need fuel. A fed workout will provide your body with power. Eating before exercise may help you sustain longer sessions and lift heavier weights.
Many fitness enthusiasts are not on board with this idea. They report feeling sick and inactive while trying to exercise after eating. With a fasted workout, you may not get the usual indigestion. Experts for fasted workouts further claim that eating afterwards makes your body use its fat reserves for energy, meaning you will burn more fat.
Deciding when to eat for an ideal workout is a personal choice. Both fasted workouts and fed activities have their benefits and shortcomings.
A.However, a fasted workout might not work for you. |
B.How your body will respond is based on your workout intensity. |
C.These benefits can result in burning more fat and shaping a slimmer body. |
D.To eat or not to eat, that is the question on many fitness enthusiasts’ minds. |

10 . When pro-golfer Umi Jai first started competing against men, she felt frightened. They didn't want to play with her, she says and they didn’t take her seriously. But then in her first match she won.
After that she had all the confidence she needed to keep playing and beating the boys. Now as the only professional female golfer in Senegal, she competes almost exclusively against men.
“Now I'm used to playing with men. I train in the morning, noon and night. I'm in the gym three or four times per week. So that also gives me more confidence.” She said. Jai turned professional seven years ago.
She’s placed in dozens of competitions around the world including in Thailand, Kenya and South Africa. Her accomplishments are particularly noteworthy considering Senegal is a conservative Muslim nation, where women are discouraged from participating in sports especially at the professional level. “When you're Muslim, we prefer to keep girls at home to find them a husband and make them a housewife.” She told journalist.
In 2020 the Senegalese Golf Federation agreed to help Jai establish a golf academy, in preparation for the 2026 summer youth Olympics in Dakar. It would be the first Olympic games to ever be held on African soil. The project was postponed due to Covid, but it's expected to restart this year.
Jai will be tasked with training Senegal’s first ever national team, with a specific focus on preparing the next generation of female golfers including her daughter.
“Girls will be part of it I mean on an equal basis like boys, and that would be something that I think we are prepared and committed to do. And Jai also has that vision and committed to promote a girl to give them opportunity, as a girl I mean, to help them get to the level that they can be.” Said the executive director of Senegalese Golf Federation.
Jai says she hopes to find a sponsor so she can continue to compete internationally, and bring the next generation of Senegalese female golfers into the fold.
