1 . Growing up, I never wore makeup and I was always more afraid of the mirror than anything else. I hadn’t thought makeup was meant for me, a disabled woman, until I saw Ulta’s new advertisement: a huge full-color photo of a model in a wheelchair.

The world of fashion and beauty is rarely related to disabilities, and even though Hollywood has made steps toward greater inclusion and clothing brand Aerie has featured women with disabilities in their advertisements, seeing disabilities in the mainstream is definitely unusual. The reason why these things make headlines is that they’re so rare.

I learned from a very young age that because of my disability, I would never be connected with beauty or charm. I’d spent so long feeling separated from so many parts of society, but Ulta is sending a powerful message with a single photo: It’s time to challenge conventional beauty standards because beauty comes in all forms.

We all want to feel included. When it comes to disabilities, it is so important, especially for children and teens with disabilities. I was well into my 30s when I rolled into a makeup store for the first time. I had no idea what I was doing and felt like entering a new world without a map; I felt like I was out of place, as if I was peeking (偷看;窥视) at a club without being invited. Imagine how my experience would have been different if I had seen a model in a wheelchair, smiling, as if to say, “Welcome. Yes, you belong!”

That message of inclusion was loud and clear for Maren Anderson, a 4-year-old girl who has a rare genetic disease and just started using a wheelchair. The moment she spotted the advertisement was caught on camera by her mom Carolyn Anderson, and quickly spread last month on Facebook. “It’s just really saying that she feels included, and she feels like she identifies with that, and belongs here just like everybody else. So, thank you, Ulta,” said Carolyn Anderson.

1. What can be learned from paragraph 2?
A.There will be more products for the disabled.
B.Aerie is the author’s favorite clothing brand.
C.Hollywood works with Ulta to help the disabled.
D.It’s hard for the public to associate beauty with disabilities.
2. What does the author think of Ulta’s new advertisement?
A.It creates a new trend in the fashion world.
B.It makes society offer more jobs to the disabled.
C.It helps make the disabled feel confident and involved.
D.It breaks the barrier between the disabled and the able-bodied.
3. How did the author feel when she first stepped into the makeup store?
A.Nervous and embarrassed.B.Sad and guilty.
C.Excited and proud.D.Bored and disappointed.
4. Why is Maren Anderson’s photo mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To expose the condition of the disabled.
B.To show the effect of Ulta’s advertisement.
C.To emphasize the sense of belonging.
D.To explore the contemporary beauty standards.

Who will you think of when hearing these inspirational sayings?

8 . Growing up on a farm, I learned from my parents about the large bees we called mangangava. But in college, when I gave a presentation about those bees, I didn’t mention their familiar name; instead I used formal terms when describing their adaptations for pollinating (授粉). I was afraid of being judged for expressing my personal knowledge in a science class. But when the instructor pressed me to tell the class whether I’d seen the bees myself and what I called them, my views and my whole career path began to change. I realized my background was valuable, and that my calling was to help educate others like me.

My parents worked on a small farm and I often helped out when I was not in school. They had a close relationship with nature, something they learned from my grandparents and passed down to me. This was why I became interested in biology.

In college, I joined a series of labs to gain research experience, but my interest in pursuing a career as a scientist began to wane after I realized my research was not helping poor people like my parents. As a black student from a rural community, I also felt out of place in most classes. The feeling of not belonging circled in my head. I sometimes thought about giving up.

My instructor’s request that I share my knowledge of the mangangava bee changed my view. She saw that tapping into my personal experiences would help me grasp the scientific concepts. No other professor had shown that kind of sensitivity, which helped me realize I did have a place in higher education and that I didn’t need to hide who I truly am.

I’m now a master’s student in education? working on a project that explores the connection between science and traditional knowledge. I don’t think I’d be here if I hadn’t crossed paths with my instructor. We need more educators and scientists like her-people who can serve as role models and know that the best way to nurture new scientists is to allow students to be themselves.

1. What did the author initially think of his background when in college?
A.It was of little use for his college studies.
B.It motivated him to carry on his research.
C.It gave him an advantage over others.
D.It was something he wanted to hide.
2. What does the underlined word “wane” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Remain.B.Withdraw.C.Fade.D.Rise.
3. What should a good educator do according to the author?
A.Value students’ personal knowledge and views.
B.Inspire students to work as hard as he or she does.
C.Treat students from different backgrounds equally.
D.Be equipped with rich knowledge of a certain field.
4. What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The family is one of the nature’s masterpiece.
B.Every man is the architect of his own fortune.
C.A good teacher is better than ten thousand books.
D.It’s only after having a proper education that one becomes a person.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议的文章。主要介绍了作者在青少年时期对自己的体型不满意。随着年龄的增大,作者学会了爱自己。

9 . I remember my teen years when all I wanted was to put on weight. Growing up, I was always on the thinner side and try as I could, I never seemed to put on the kilos. I would admire the chubbier(丰满的)girls and wished to be like them.

Now I realize I had weighed my self-worth on how I looked. I had also sent out a message saying that I wasn’t good enough because of my body size, not realizing that we train others how to treat us.

Today, I’m comfortable in my skin, and I have learnt the art of self-love. And yes, I did put on the kilos years later after childbirth, but I lost them at the gym, and I am happy with myself. This got me thinking about the number of people today who want to look like someone else. They looked in the mirror and don’t like what they see. They are always in search of a different self.

Learn to fall in love with yourself. Learn to value yourself. If you do not like something about yourself, why not work out to get to your ideal(理想的)body type? This not only increase your confidence, but you no longer have to wear those ugly tops to hide your stomach. Invest(投资)in self-improvement courses if you have to.

Learn to say No. You do not have to present yourself for every party or appointment. Give yourself space to breathe. As women, we are taught to take care of everyone else but ourselves. We get worn out raising our families and balancing our private lives with our careers, and rarely have time for ourselves. At the end of the day, we are so exhausted; everyone else is happy but us. When you are tired, take enough time to rest. Remember, you cannot pour out of an empty cup. Every so often, take time to refill your cup.

1. What did the author think of her problem as a teenager?
A.She was too fat.B.She was too confident.
C.Her dream was never realized.D.She cared too much about her figure.
2. What does the author look like now?
A.Slim.B.Black.C.Chubbier.D.Rough-skinned.
3. What should an overweight woman do according to the author?
A.Learn from others.B.Be a strong woman inside.
C.Try to be the person she like.D.Wear something to look thinner.
4. What does the author argue about?
A.Say no to parties.B.Learn to love oneself.
C.Focus on oneself only.D.Balance the life and work.
