3 . Have you ever loved a destination but couldn’t figure out why — or even a way ——to express your feelings? That’s my dilemma with Morocco.

In August, I traveled in a country that had long been, on my wish list. I rode a camel, got lost in Medinas, and ate more couscous (粗麦粉) than was humanly possible.

I loved the trip. Our friendly guide introduced us to the helpful locals. I made friends with my tour mates and my roommate (which, on a tour, is a huge blessing). I loved being lost in the smell of different spices, and the chaos of millions of people and the dark red of the Sahara were all I wanted them to be.

There were many moments when I felt like a fish out of water and things didn’t go my way. But I take pleasure in those moments because it’s when you are pushed out of your comfort zone that you grow. Morocco lived up to all my expectations, but for some reason, my experience has been hard to express. Why?

One constant in my travels is that of a touchstone, one defining point where the trip all comes together and acts as a prism (三棱镜) for everything the journey represented . In Costa Rica,it was getting lost in a jungle. In Thailand, it was meeting those five people who changed my life.

I’m so inconsistent about Morocco because I lack that touchstone. There’s no “whoa” moment. But I have thousands of little ones - staring at a million stars in the blackness of the desert, discovering new foods with some amazing Australians on my tour, and befriending the fish sellers.

1. What does the author regard as a huge blessing?
A.Going on a guided trip.
B.Having a helpful guide.
C.Being warmly received by the local people.
D.Getting along well with the fellow travelers.
2. What’s the purpose of the fifth paragraph?.
A.To prove Morocco lacks the touchstone.
B.To show his reliance on the touchstone.
C.To compare Morocco with Costa Rica and Thailand.
D.To share his experience in Costa Rica and Thailand.
3. What made the author think the journey amazing?
A.The lack of big moments.
B.The little “whoa” moments.
C.Meeting with five Thai people.
D.Making friends with Australians.
4. What does the author mainly talk about?
A.Unpleasant travel in Morocco.
B.Finding a touchstone on travel.
C.Reflection on traveling in Morocco.
D.Lack of special moments in Morocco.

5 . Is your doctor telling you the truth? Possibly not, according to a new survey in Health Affairs of nearly 1,900 doctors around the country.

The researchers found that 55% of the doctors said that in the last year they had been more positive about a patient s prognosis (预断) than his medical history. And 10% said they had told their patients something that wasn’t true. About a third of the doctors said they did not completely agree that they should disclose medical errors to their patients, and 40% said they didn’t feel the need to disclose financial ties to drug companies.

Really? The study’s lead author, Dr. Lisa Iezzoni, a medicine professor at Harvard Medical School and director of the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital, was surprised to learn how dishonest her colleagues were. “Some of the numbers were larger than I expected they might be,” she says.

Why the white lies? In some cases, Iezzoni says it was for self-protection. Nearly 20% of the doctors admitted that they didn’t disclose a medical error to their patients because they were afraid of being punished for improper treatment. In other cases, it may have been for the patient’ s benefit. Some might spare an anxious patient from hearing about the slightly abnormal results of a lab test, for example, if it has no negative effect on the patient’s health.

“After all doctors are human too,” says Iezzoni. “They don’t want to upset their patients, they don’ t want their patients to look unhappy or burst into tears. But they also need to be professionals; so they need to tell themselves that if there is a difficult truth they need to tell their patients, they need to work out a way of communicating that effectively.”

That’s important for doctors to appreciate, because as well-intentioned as their lies may be, other studies consistently show that patients prefer the truth, and would rather hear unpleasant news than remain ignorant about an awful medical condition. Being fully informed is a way that patients can prepare for whatever might occur. Therefore, it is necessary for doctors to learn to express themselves.

1. About the new survey in Health Affairs, we can learn that ______.
A.40% of the doctors preferred to work in drug companies

A.were trying to defend themselvesB.wanted to prove they were professionals

3. Next the author most probably talk about ______.
A.how doctors should communicate with their patients
B.how to build up trust between doctors and patients

D.how to stop patients from complaining
4. The author writes the text mainly to _____.
A.report some medical errorsB.talk about the needs of patients

6 . Looking for educational and inspiring books for your children? You cannot miss these tales of surviving in the wild.

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

A tale of a joyful childhood summer spent sailing in the Lake District of England, this novel is based on Ransome’s own family. Two groups of children each have their own sailboat, and spend the summer defending against an imagined enemy, camping, fishing, and exploring, while trying to catch their enemy’s boat.

The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss

Inspired by Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, Wyss decided to write a story about how a Swiss family survived a ship accident and made a new way of life on an unexplored island in the East Indies so that his four sons could learn about basic family values, the use of the natural world and self-reliance. Morals aside, it’s a great thrilling story.

A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton-porter

Poor, unpopular Elnora Comstock grows up in the dangerous but beautiful wetlands of northern Indiana, building an unusual life. She loves wildlife more than anything. The book was written as a protest against logging (伐木), drilling for oil (钻井油) and drying up rivers for agriculture that were taking place in the Limberlost Swamp.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

The main character, Karana, is a woman left on what’s now called La Isla de San Nicolas,   just off the coast of California. 7 . Researchers found that sleep deprivation(剥夺)has something with overeating. They studied 17 healthy men and women for 11 days and nights in a lab, where researchers recorded their every movement and recorded everything they ate. That way, researchers could make calculations of how much energy the participants were taking in and how much they were burning off through activities.

After a three-day baseline period, one group was freely assigned to sleep and wake whenever they wanted for eight days, while another was woken up after only two-thirds of their usual sleep time—that amounted to about 80 minutes less sleep per night on average. The group that experienced such restricted sleep tended to eat more the following day, adding 549 extra calories to their usual diet, while those who slept as much as they wanted ate about the same on each of the eight experiment days as they did during the three-day baseline period.

The poorly sleeping group was likely to gain weight over the long term, if their sleep was continually restricted, since they didn't burn any more calories than their better sleeping counterparts. That may help explain why previous studies have found that shift workers who work at night and sleep during the day tend to gain more weight than day workers: their disturbed sleep pattern may enhance them to eat more while they don't expend any more energy to work off the added calories.

Therefore, it's important for people to remember that the relationship between sleep, eating and weight is a complex one. Getting a sufficient amount of sleep each night may play an important role in regulating how much we eat and how many calories we burn, and it may also help determine when we eat. Eating when we should be sleeping may increase the risk of weight gain, as the body is more likely to turn nighttime calories into fat rather than burning them off.

1. According to the researchers, there is a link between________.
A.sleep and healthB.sleep and activities
C.sleep and energyD.sleep and overeating
2. People who are short of sleep may________.
A.eat less the following dayB.eat more the following day
C.wake earlier the following dayD.wake later the following day
3. The better sleeping people can________.
A.burn more caloriesB.work at night
C.gain more weightD.eat more than others
4. The author mainly wants to tell us that________.
A.the body can turn calories into fat at night
B.it is dangerous for people to gain weight
C.people should eat less to ensure a good sleep
D.people should pay attention to the relations between sleep, eating and weight

9 . Over centuries, kung fu has been used for self-defense and to defend against enemies in war.

In Dengfeng today, ten kilometers from the Shaolin Temple, there are over 60 martial arts schools with more than 50,000 students. They come to the schools for a variety of reasons. The majority hope to become movie stars. Some come to learn skills that will ensure good jobs in the military or police force. A few are sent by their parents to learn self-control and hard work.

Master Hu Zhengsheng teaches at a small school in Dengfeng. Recently, he was offered an important role in a kung fu movie. It would have been good publicity for his school, but he did not accept. He doesn't agree with how kung fu is often shown in movies. Unlike many large schools, which teach acrobatics (杂技) and kickboxing, Hu teaches his students traditional kung fu forms. He teaches them the way his master taught him. But attracting new students to this style of kung fu has become a problem. Hu's afraid his art will soon die out. He has to remind his students that kung fu was designed for fighting, not to entertain.

“There are no high kicks or acrobatics here,” he says. “It is hard to convince boys to spend many years learning something that won't make them wealthy or famous.” Hu's students sleep in unheated rooms and train outside no matter what the temperature is. They hit trees with their bare hands and take turns sitting on each other's shoulders to build leg strength. To master kung fu, they must learn respect, and how to “eat bitterness”, a Mandarin expression meaning to “enduring suffering”. The life of a Shaolin master, Hu belives, is not easy or attractive.

Master Hu is in a difficult position. For old traditions to survive, the young must learn. Gradually, he has begun offering a few courses in kickboxing and the acrobatic kung fu forms, hoping to attract new students. Then, maybe, he'll be able to convince them to learn Shaolin kung fu the traditional way.

1. Which is the main reason why most people study kung fu?
A.To learn self-control.B.To win fame and fortune.
C.To get hight-paid jobs.D.To build up their strength.
2. What does “here” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.In kung fu movies.B.In the city of Dengfeng.
C.In master Hu’s school.D.In the art of kung fu.
3. What can be inferred from Hu's idea?
A.Traditional kung fu needs protection.
B.Kung fu can function as entertainment.
C.The life of a kung fu master is more than attractive.
D.The hardship in learning kung fu is discouraging.
4. What's Hu's attitude towards the future of kung fu?

10 . On the Father's Day before my father entered a nursing home, I gave him an Elmo doll. Like the colored pencils and sketchbook I bought him a year earlier, this was a desperate attempt to bring some joy to my increasingly bedridden father. Years ago, my father suffered a stroke which left him in bed for the rest of his life.

At the sight of Elmo, my three elder sisters shook their heads, certain that our father who was anything but childish would not like it. Sure enough, my father, 76, broke into that unpleasant smile that barely concealed his dislike.

“What on earth is this?” shouted my sisters, bursting into laughter.

“Daddy knows why I give him this,” I said, thinking that they had no idea what Elmo meant to my father. To my disappointment, my father shrugged. How could he not remember? Years earlier, I had been in the kitchen and heard something rare from the living room: laughter. I ran downstairs and saw that Elmo was on the PBS cooking show “The Frugal Gourmet”. “I don’t know what it is about him that gets to me,” my father choked out between laughter and tears. “He's just so funny!”

As my father lay in the nursing home, I would visit him in the evenings. We watched old movies with the lights off. Even though he never asked for it, I brought Elmo from home and put him where my father could see him. Before leaving, I would take Elmo from the dresser and place him in my father’s immobile arm. A slight smile would appear on his face. It never looked softer.

1. What’s the problem with the author’s father?
A.He lost the ability to feel joy.B.He became childish after the stroke.
C.He was disappointed with his children.D.He was bound to stay in bed due to an illness.
2. What does the underlined word “concealed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Hid.B.Showed.C.Explained.D.Expressed.
3. Why did the author give his father an Elmo doll?
A.His father asked for one.B.An Elmo doll once amused his father.
C.Nothing but a doll made his father smile.D.His father mentioned one on the cooking show.
4. What does the text mainly tell us?
A.The trouble a stroke can cause.B.The difficulty to make a father happy.
C.How a simple gift brings joy to a father.D.How to choose a proper toy for old people.
