2 . What do you do when you have a problem? Would you ask a crowd of strangers for a solution? It may sound strange, but it has inspired innovation and is the thinking behind “challenge prizes”.

Challenge prizes come in many shapes but the basic concept remains the same. Rather than consult an expert for a solution, you offer the prize to anyone who believes they can solve it and present the first to do so with a prize. Many would argue. “Who is better qualified than an expert?” But actually, not using experts seems to result in a great deal of thinking outside of the box.

Some argue that formal education can kill creativity as it sometimes only teaches a single method to achieve a task. In the same way, some suggest that experts can have the same problem. “If we set up a challenge prize, the ‘experts’ that compete in it may tell us it can’t be done.” says Marcus Shingles, former CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation.

There are other advantages too. “You’re not asking people to use a particular solution to solve that problem. So you get this large amount of diversity,” adds Shingles.

Yet, challenge prizes also come with problems. You don’t want to create a challenge prize which encourages people to solve a problem where there is no demand. In 1979, a prize of £ 100,000 was claimed by the first person to fly under human power across the English Channel. Yet, it has not led to the adoption of human-powered flight as a form of travel. And there are those who devote their time and energy only to see no return at all. Overall, challenge prizes don’t seem to be going out of style anytime soon. To many, the challenge to innovate and the attraction of the prize are too much to resist.

1. The basic concept behind a challenge prize is        .
A.allowing ordinary people to compete with experts
B.challenging formal education that kills creativity
C.rewarding the first problem-solver of a challenge
D.picking out someone more qualified than experts
2. According to Marcus Shingles, what can be the problem with “experts”?
A.They are less daring than non-experts.B.They suffer from fixed thinking patterns.
C.They tend to overlook details of a problem.D.They focus on theory rather than practice.
3. What does the author suggest about challenge prizes?
A.They may not serve practical purposes.B.Their appeal mainly lies in the prize.
C.They are a waste of time and energy.D.Their popularity is to last for decades.
4. What of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.The amazing power of cooperationB.A reform in formal education
C.The popularity of challenge prizesD.The problem-solving prizes

3 . Drinking a daily glass of wine for health reasons may not be so healthy after all, a new study from Washington University School of Medicine suggests.

Analyzing data from more than 400,000 people between ages 18 to 85, the researchers found that consuming one to two drinks four or more times per week-an amount considered healthy by current guidelines-increases the risk of early death by 20 percent, compared with drinking three times a week or less. The increased risk of death was consistent across age groups.

"It used to seem like having one or two drinks per day was no big deal, and there even have been some studies suggesting it can improve health,” said first author Sarah M. Hartz. “But now we know that even the lightest daily drinkers have an increased death risk. ”

Although some earlier studies have linked light drinking to improvements   in cardiovascular(心血管的)health, Hartz said the new study shows that those potential gains are outweighed by other risks. Her team evaluated heart disease risk and cancer risk and found that although in some cases, drinking alcohol may reduce risk of heart-related problems, daily drinking increased cancer risk and, as a result, mortality risk.

The new study reviewed data from more than 700 studies around the world and concluded that the safest level of drinking is none. The Washington University team analysis focused on light drinkers: those who consumed only one or two drinks a day. The study focused on two large groups of people in the United States: 340,668 participants, aged 18 to 85, in the National Health Interview Survey, and another 93,653 individuals, aged 40 to 60 who were treated as outpatients(门诊病人)at Veterans Administration clinics.

Hartz thought that some doctors could recommend that people with family histories of heart problems have a drink from time to time, but in families with a history of cancer, physicians had better recommend quitting drinking.

1. What's the new finding of the study on light drinking?
A.It benefits heart health.
B.It is potentially unhealthy.
C.It is the main cause of cancer.
D.It harms only certain age groups.
2. How did researchers carry out the new study?
A.By collecting, clinical data.
B.By analyzing questionnaires.
C.By visiting hospitals personally.
D.By making an analysis of other studies.
3. What can we infer from the text?
A.Earlier studies are proved totally wrong by Hartz.
B.Hartz thought doctors should avoid suggesting drinking.
C.Hartz thought doctors should offer personalized suggestions.
D.The Washington University team surveyed about 700 people.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Daily drinking, however much, adds to risk of death
B.Risk of drinking wine can't be ignored among youth ·
C.A sip of wine a day keeps the doctor away
D.Light drinking still promises a longer life:

4 . It was a very hot day in late summer. I was a young dad working in a local wood mill. It was dangerous, back-breaking work that paid very little. In the year I had worked there only four other people hadn't quit and been replaced with new faces. Those of us who stayed did so only because there was no other work to find to support our families.

On this day the fans weren't working and all of us were covered in sweat and sawdust. When I looked around every face I saw looked angry and frustrated. Suddenly,a voice called out:“Hey! There's a deer in here.” A lost little doe had wandered through the open loading bay doors and was now cowering(蜷缩)in between the huge stacks of wood. All of us stopped working and went looking for her as she ran about looking for a way out.

Now most people where I live hunt deer for meat in the fall, but also treat them with great kindness the rest of the year. Many will even buy 50lb bags of corn to help feed them during the harsh winter months. It was no surprise then that all of us were soon quickly working together to free this little doe. By blocking off all the other routes we were able to guide her panic search back to the open bay doors. We watched as she jumped out of the building and back into the woods. Then we walked back in to work. I noticed something, though. On every face there was a joyful smile. It was as if this one single act of kindness had energized us again and reminded us of what life is all about.

B.The deer was a light to the dull work.
C.The deer was trapped in a big well.

3. How did the men free the deer in the end?
A.By opening one route.
B.By dropping some food.
C.By using familiar signals.
D.By imitating another deer.
4. Which of the following best describes the workers?
A.Bad-tempered but patient.
B.Hard-working and loving.

6 . Due to a scheduling accident, one Waffle House worker was left alone to run the entire restaurant on a Sunday night.

Ethan Crispo was just one of about 30 hungry customers who wanted food at midnight. After sitting at his table for a while, he noticed there was just one upset employee available to take orders, cook food, clean tables and manage the cash register.

The 24-year-old patron was losing hope of ever getting a meal. The employee who was recognized only by his name tag reading “Ben”-seemed to be on the edge of panic until Crispo saw him speaking to a male customer in a blue shirt sitting at the counter. After a brief conversation, Ben handed him an apron (围裙) and the man got to work washing dishes.

“It was a transition so smooth. I initially assumed it was a staff member returning to his shift,” Crispo told AL.com. “It wasn’t. It was a kind stranger.”

A couple of minutes later, a woman in high heels and a stylish dress walked behind the counter to make more coffee. She then took a few orders before resigning herself to clearing tables. Suddenly, a third customer in a red shirt marched over to help as well, though Crispo failed to catch his name or take a photo of the man at work.

The term “customer service” took on a whole new meaning that night. “It was the most fascinating thing,” Crispo said. “It was just one of the wildest instances of really, really cool people just coming together. It made a difference to many people that night. Certainly, their actions made an impact on me,” he added. “Humanity isn’t just good-it’s great.”

1. What does the underlined word”patron”probably refer to?

7 . I just had a snowstorm that piled up eight inches of snow. It truly was a winter wonderland, and there was white beauty everywhere. Since I didn't have anything to do that day, I really enjoyed it.

But then the second snowstorm arrived that night, piling additional inches of snow on top of the snow banks that were already there. And then on the evening news, the weather cast gave us a notice that still another snowstorm was headed our way. Then I felt despondent. I had things to do and places to go. After days of being snowbound, I felt like I was under house arrest. I was stuck.

A place stuck isn't a fun place to be, whether it's from a snowstorm or from life circumstances such as a bad relationship, bills that seem to tower over our heads, or situations where we see no way out. All of us will feel stuck at one time or another, but it's how we respond that makes the difference.

I had a friend named Hannah. She was stuck in the heartbreaking world of infertility (不孕). She longed for a child more than anything. Instead of accepting defeat, she acted sincerely. Think about Nelson Mandela in a dark prison. It was a seemingly hopeless place, but instead of becoming depressed or bitter, he kept fighting for freedom. Yes, he kept fighting to get the success.

Circumstances cannot define us, but our reactions do. Each of those men and women learned important lessons in their "stuck" situations, and we can as well.

1. What does the underlined word" despondent" in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Unhappy.B.Unusual.C.Ambitious.D.Energetic.
2. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
B.Provide some advice for the readers.
C.Introduce some background information.
D.Form a connecting link of the context.
3. Why does the author mention Hannah and Nelson Mandela?
A.To introduce two great celebrities.
B.To introduce the way to be famous.
C.To show their different circumstances.
D.To show how to respond to difficult situations.
4. What's the best title for the text?
A.Don't be defeated by failure
B.Don't be trapped by snow
C.Enjoy the white beauty
D.Keep calm in the winter

8 . If you make list of the world’s top ten most challenging jobs, chances are that being a teacher will not make the cut. But think about the discouraging task millions of educators face each day as they try to shape group of often bad-tempered, wild kids into intelligent, well-rounded individuals. That surely has to be the toughest job in the world, especially given that there is no promotion or bonus awaiting them even if they are wildly successful!

What if these all-important individuals that we often take for granted disappear from our lives? That was what Project Ed and Participant Media’s Teach campaign asked filmmakers of all ages to imagine in their recently-held competition Entitled “A World Without Teachers”, its purpose was to inspire more young people to become teachers. However, the 62 amazing video submissions also serve as a reminder of how horrible things would be if we didn’t have these selfless individuals guiding us through life. What was interesting is that even the youngest   participants did not appear to be happy at the idea of not having anybody telling them what to do.

High-school student Savannah Wakefield reflected if art as we know it today would have been different without teachers. Would Monet have discovered his talent for impressionism? Los Angeles-based Miles Horst, who won the 1000 USD prize for the best adult submission imagines a world where teachers are replaced by a “brain box” in his fun lively entry.

Youth category winner Marina Barham’s video represents a fact we all know but often forget. Teachers don’t just teach, they inspire-something that no electronic device, no matter how smart, can do! So the next time you think your teacher is being “mean” for trying to channel you in the right direction, imagine life without him/her. We have feeling it will not appear as rosy!

9 . If you are planning a New Year’s Eve party, make sure you have more planned than just the champagne toast at midnight and the finger foods. Your guests will have a much better time if you set up some games for them to play and enjoy.

Guess the Resolution(新年计划)—Give each member of the party five pieces of paper and a pencil. Ask them to write down five resolutions without writing down their names. Place all of the resolutions in a hat and mix them up. Pull pieces of paper out of the hat one at a time and see if your guests can guess which person came up with the resolution. There will be some fun surprises as strange or entertaining resolutions are read out loud.

New Year’s Rock Band—This game requires a collection of noisemakers, pots, pans and wooden spoons. These items will be your guests’ instruments as they play a song on the popular Guess That Tune game. Split the group into two teams. Have one team select four members to be their rock band for the turn and whisper the name of a song to the band members. The band must then play the song using their instruments while the rest of their teammates try to guess. The team gets a point if they get the song correct. Repeat the same step with the other team. This game will yield ridiculous performances of popular and entertaining songs.

Around the World-Most—New Year’s Eve parties don’t start until late evening. An around the world theme allows the party to start earlier in the day, with a celebration each time a new time zone reaches midnight. A world map displayed in the party room allows guests to track the current celebration. Adding a pin in each time zone as it reaches midnight adds an interactive element to the party. There are various activities for vacationing kids in Miami, and they can spend one day learning about some of Miami’s rich cultural heritage (遗产),as well as a bit of science and history.

Then take some time to simply walk the streets and take in the music, the art and the personality of the people and their neighborhood before returning to your car.

On your way back to the hotel, visit the Miami Science Museum, where there are complete science and natural history museums. Or you may visit the Miami Seaquarium (水族馆).Though there are many such theme parks more modern and in better shape than this 1955 pioneer, it’s still worth a visit for their dolphin, sea lion and killer whale shows.
