Drinking a daily glass of wine for health reasons may not be so healthy after all, a new study from Washington University School of Medicine suggests.
Analyzing data from more than 400,000 people between ages 18 to 85, the researchers found that consuming one to two drinks four or more times per week-an amount considered healthy by current guidelines-increases the risk of early death by 20 percent, compared with drinking three times a week or less. The increased risk of death was consistent across age groups.
"It used to seem like having one or two drinks per day was no big deal, and there even have been some studies suggesting it can improve health,” said first author Sarah M. Hartz. “But now we know that even the lightest daily drinkers have an increased death risk. ”
Although some earlier studies have linked light drinking to improvements in cardiovascular(心血管的)health, Hartz said the new study shows that those potential gains are outweighed by other risks. Her team evaluated heart disease risk and cancer risk and found that although in some cases, drinking alcohol may reduce risk of heart-related problems, daily drinking increased cancer risk and, as a result, mortality risk.
The new study reviewed data from more than 700 studies around the world and concluded that the safest level of drinking is none. The Washington University team analysis focused on light drinkers: those who consumed only one or two drinks a day. The study focused on two large groups of people in the United States: 340,668 participants, aged 18 to 85, in the National Health Interview Survey, and another 93,653 individuals, aged 40 to 60 who were treated as outpatients(门诊病人)at Veterans Administration clinics.
Hartz thought that some doctors could recommend that people with family histories of heart problems have a drink from time to time, but in families with a history of cancer, physicians had better recommend quitting drinking.

It’s said that the average American eats almost 25 percent of their daily calories from snacking (零食) alone, and snacking is the leading cause of childhood obesity.
Therefore, there are two choices: Stop snacking (hard) or snack healthier (simple). But, for many of us, telling apart what’s “healthy” and how much to consume (消耗) are two different things. But, if you don’t keep the amount in check it can seriously ruin your diet. It’s easy to consume double or triple the amount. If you’re struggling to keep you and your family’s snacking under control, you may be interested in the new online store called NatureBox.com, offering a new service delivered right to your front door on a monthly basis.
After you sign up on their website and provide some information about your taste preferences and anything else, the company sends you a box every month containing a delicious selection of healthy snack foods. Each box costs just under $20 and shipping is always free. NatureBox is meant to fit your lifestyle by providing you with snacks you’ll enjoy and look forward to eating. You can easily order what you want to receive based on the snacks you love most. And now, NatureBox is offering an immediate 25% off their first order. My ten-year-old son Zack is very aware of his body and how food affects him. This past summer Zack was invited to a camping trip. He left on Friday and came home on Sunday morning. On Saturday night, Zack ate a lot of food...and junk food...and who knows what else. He went to bed at 11:00 p.m. and at around 1:30 a.m. Zack threw up in the tent. It was his body telling him that it didn’t like what he ate that day.
Recently, Zack and I were asked to speak to an audience of more than 200. I spoke about Unjunk Your Junk Food and Zack spoke about his appreciation of our book and how it has impacted his life as a ten-year-old child.
I asked Zack to write his own speech because I wanted what he said to come straight from his heart.
Here’s his speech:
“Today I’m going to talk to you about my mom’s book, Unjunk Your Junk Food. It’s a great book, but I’m a little disappointed that my favorite type of candy is in it, Twizzlers. I realized that it’s bad after reading the book, so I don’t eat it anymore.
I saw the movie Super Size Me and I realized that junk food, especially fast food, is really unhealthy, and I won’t ever go to McDonald’s.
I brought my mom’s book to school, and my mom even gave presentations to many classes, including mine. Well you guys can do the same thing and show people the book at your work and schools, and give them tips on eating healthy food.
Thanks for listening.”
While not all children have as much reaction to junk food as Zack, it’s clear that the human body doesn’t work as its prime(全盛时期) when we give it this type of food. It’s important to me that my children eat a healthy diet and limit their exposure to the food that isn’t good for them, and the best way for them to do that is for me to teach them about making healthy choices. While I fill my home with healthy options, it’s wonderful to see my son now come to realize, on his own, that the choices he makes affect the way he feels.

Salt doesn’t directly melt ice, nor does it make snow simply disappear. Instead it makes water less likely to freeze in a phenomenon called freezing point depression. In the case of simple rock salt, which is a rawer, less pure version of table salt, each molecule (分子) splits into smaller elements. Normally, when water freezes into ice, its molecules line up to form a stable, orderly structure. Salt interrupts the process, however, and temperatures must drop lower to overcome that interruption and for freezing to occur.
But if salt needs to interact with liquid water, how does it do anything when temperatures are stubbornly below freezing, and water should already be in the form of ice? That’s where cars help clear their own way by creating friction and, in turn, heat. The friction allows for the ice that has already frozen to melt a little bit, making it unlikely to freeze.
Beyond rock salt’s ability to clear icy streets, it can also be destructive. Chloride ions (氯离子) can cause wear and tear on vehicles and facilities. Increasing chloride densities in North American lakes could begin to upset local ecology and degrade sources of drinking water.
Many local governments are looking for alternatives to rock salt. Other salts such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride work in the same way as rock salt, and they’re perhaps even more efficient. Some experiments are testing other ice-preventing solutions, including those that contain sugars instead of or in addition to salts. Another approach relies more heavily on sand, which can mechanically make roads safer. All of this experimentation is aimed at ensuring people can travel in any weather condition — a Herculean task when winter brings its worst.

Ortelius was fond of new discoveries and travel, so he began collecting books, prints, paintings, wall maps, and coins from all over Europe. During one trip to Poitiers, France, Ortelius met cartographer (制图员) Gerard Mercator, who inspired him to start producing maps himself. Ortelius began his career as a map colorist for the Guild of Saint Luke in Ant- werp in 1547, and then became a map designer at the Plantin company in 1587.
Ortelius’s first atlas was called Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. First printed in 1570, it fea- tured a collection of 53 maps, all the same style and size, printed from metal plates and arranged by continent, region, and state. The atlas was soon gaining traction. It had to be re- printed 4 times in the first year of publishing. Between 1570 and 1612 the atlas was published in 42 editions in 7 languages.
The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum atlas featured one of Ortelius’s most famous maps- Typus Orbis Terrarum. The hand-colored map covered the entire world from pole to pole, revealing the shape and size of different continents. At the time the map was made — much of North America was yet to be explored — so naturally, large parts of the geography were merely theoretical. The eastern seaboard stuck out eastward, illustrating the inaccurate measurements of longitudes (经度) at the time. It’s also interesting to note that the Mississippi River did not appear on the map, and there was no sign of the Great Lakes.
However, the map actually contains some of the best collection work of the period, and represents a huge shift in the history of mapmaking. It is the hallmark world map of the first atlas ever published.
1. What can be inferred about Ortelius?A.He was an inspiration to Mercator. | B.He was a great collector of Asian art. |
C.He became a map designer at age 20. | D.He had a great curiosity about the world. |

It can be fun to find out about new facts, but sometimes you come across things you’d rather not have known. Luckily, we’ve got some fun facts for you today! It turns out that your hand can tell you a lot about your personality. It’s really quite strange. This research mostly focuses on your fingers.
The secret lies in your ring finger and index finger(食指). It can say a lot about what kind of man you are. Yes, this test only applies to men because the length of these fingers indicates the level of testosterone(睾酮)in men. There are three types: A, B and C.
A. The ring finger is longer than the index finger
We’re talking about handsome men here. They’re charming and can get along with everyone. Yet they are a little more aggressive and are quick to take risks. This also means that these people often make more money than their colleagues with a shorter ring finger.
B. The ring finger is shorter than the index finger
Men with these hands are very confident and can even be a little self-loving. These people have no trouble being alone often and don’t like being disturbed. When it comes to love, they do not take a risk out there a lot. They’re not the ones to make the first move.
C. The ring finger and index finger are the same lengths
Maybe this says enough already. Men with these hands are good mediators(调停者), devoted and loving. Everything is balanced with these people. They’re calm and everything seems to run smoothly, as if it’s all organised.
1. Why does the author think the hands are strange?A.We know nothing about them. | B.Both the hands are different. |

Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sport 1: Basketball.
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from the Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts with one teacher monitoring each game.
Sport 2: Gym.
We will be using the St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has a lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities — skipping, jogging, and outdoor aerobics (有氧运动) are all free of charge. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sport 3: Hiking.
Hiking will take place at the Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75 per hour. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sport 4: Swimming.
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the students from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (2:45 pm to 3:45 pm). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

C.To wear a swimming suit. | D.To be good at swimming. |
Now, a new study suggests that coffee fans can make their drink taste sweeter by simply changing the colour of their cups.
Scientists claim that blue and glass mugs, which are popular in some coffee shops, can reduce coffee’s bitterness, without any need for sugar, and that coffee drunk from white cups tastes the bitterest.
To prove their claims, the researchers invited 36 volunteers and used three different colored cups -- blue, white and transparent glass -- to do an experiment.
In the experiment, coffee consumed from the white cup was found to taste less sweet when compared to the other two colored cups, while the blue cup made the coffee taste the sweetest.
The scientists believe that the colour brown may be associated with coffee’s bitterness because coffee in a white cup appears the brownest and tastes the bitterest.
“Our study clearly shows that the colour of a coffee cup does influence the perceived (感受到的) taste and flavor of coffee,” said Dr George Doorn of Federation University Australia, “but the potential effects may be different between a one-time purchase and a return customer.”
“Anyhow, the effect of the colour of the cup on the flavor of the coffee suggests that café owners, baristas (服务员), as well as coffee cup manufacturers should carefully consider the colour of their cups, ” he added.
However, the idea that colour can alter the taste of food and drink is not new.
A study published last year revealed that red, strawberry-flavored mousse (慕斯蛋糕) served on a white plate was rated as 10 percent sweeter and 15 percent more flavorous than the same food presented on a black plate.

We have to use them on so many occasions. We say them when someone gives us a drink, helps us to pick up things, hands us a letter, lends us a book or gives us a gift.
Another important word is “please”. Many people forget to use it. It is rude to ask someone to do something without saying “please”. We have to use it when we ask for something, too. It may be a book or a pencil, more rice or more sauce, help or advice. It may be in the classroom, at home, at the bus stop or over the counter. We have to use “please” to make requests pleasant.
We have to learn to say “sorry” too. When we have hurt someone’s feelings, we’ll have to go up and say we’re sorry. When we have told a lie and feel sorry, we’ll have to explain with that word, too. “Sorry” is a healing (和解的) word. We can make people forget wrongs by using it sincerely.
These three words are simple but important. Man had to use them long ago. We have to use them now. Our children will have to use them in the future. They are pleasing words to be used in any language.

【推荐3】As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease – especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.
The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely “ not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body’s special needs. Both types have simply been called “well”. In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellness” only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise and they make a point of monitoring their body's condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap may be "well," in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. "Wellness" may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.
