The lead author of the study is Sarah Anderson. She is a professor of epidemiology(流行病学). Anderson says that, for parents, the results of the study support the importance of creating a bedtime routine.

She says that having a usual bedtime routine is something “families can do to lower their children’s risk” of becoming overweight.

Researchers used data from 977 children for the study. These children are part of a larger project called the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. The project follows healthy babies born in 1991 in 10 cities in US.

When these children turned 15 years old, the researchers looked at their rates of obesity. Of those with the earliest bedtimes, only one out of 10 was obese. Of those who went to bed between 8 and 9 p.m., 16 percent became obese. And out of those with the latest bedtimes, 23 percent became obese.

The World Health Organization reported in 2014 that the number of overweight babies and young children worldwide had increased from 31 million in 1990 to 44 million in 2012. If that trend continues, the WHO warns, there will be 70 million obese children in the world by 2025.

The Australian brush turkey has “big feet”. They damage people’s beloved backyards by raking up dirt to make large nests which can sometimes hold up to 56 eggs in one mound(土堆). This is because one male brush turkey can breed(交配繁殖) with up to six females who can lay up to 12 eggs.

The population of brush turkeys in Australia was severely reduced along the east coast in the 1960s after coming close to extinction during the Depression as they were easy to hunt for food. As a result, they become a protected species in the 1970s which made it illegal to shoot them.

“In the 1980s, they took over Brisbane, and Sydney is about 10 years behind what happened up here,” Professor Darryl Jones, deputy director of the Environmental Futures Research Institute at Griffith University, said. “Once they get into the city they work out there’s a lot of food and they have a fair bit of protection.”

While brush turkeys have cultural significance in Queensland, they can be annoying for many in Sydney. Former Central Coast resident(居民) Paul told 702 ABC Sydney that he had “an ongoing battle for years” with brush turkeys that built nests in his garden.

“We had plague proportions(瘟疫之灾) when we lived on the Central Coast. I was trying to grow food and vegetables but I had to give up,” he said. “They just completely dug them up. I was fighting a losing battle.”

But Sydney resident Joy thinks differently. “Brush turkeys are part of nature,” she said. “I’ve been able to successfully have a flower garden and a vegetable garden and have brush turkeys wander through the yard. The way I’ve done it is just to put sticks in the ground around the plants. I haven’t had any problems at all and people need to think of ways to overcome these problems rather than kill animals.”

8 . On a hot summer weekend, Jorge Ayub saw the public beach north of Boston already crowded with nearly 1 million people drawn to the annual sand sculpture festival. Traffic on the nearby road was heavy, bands played music loudly, and later that night fireworks would light up the beach.

And on the sand were four pairs of tiny shorebirds. These chicks(小鸟) were still too young to fly and a precious addition to the national endeavor to save a bird once down to 139 pairs in Massachusetts. It was Mr. Ayub’s job. “Everyone made it,” Ayub, a coastal ecologist reported at the end of the long weekend over the nests.

Once common, piping plovers(笛鸻) were hunted and then squeezed out of their habitats(栖息地) by coastal development until, in 1986, the federal government listed the Atlantic Coastal birds as threatened. The bird’s recovery has been halting. After three decades, the Atlantic population stands just under the 2,000-pair goal set by federal law.

But the star has been Massachusetts, which has seen plovers increase to 687pairs from 139 pairs in 1986. One reason for that: “chick-sitting” in which conservationists sometimes spend all day watching over the birds.

That progress has made Massachusetts the only East Coast state that decided to relax some Endangered Species Act restrictions: for example, to reduce the fenced-off areas and vehicle limits that have annoyed residents(居民).

“Look at the stretch(一片土地),”Anyb says. “We had six nesting pairs between here and that bathhouse 600 yards away. By regulation, each nest should have 100 yards of fencing. We could have put up fencing and closed the beach all the way to the bathhouse.”

Instead, the plovers are surrounded in much smaller areas by “symbolic fencing”. None of the 52 seawall entrances to the beach are closed. “If we put up too much fencing, people will be upset, and they are going to destroy it or walk right through the nesting areas,” Ayub says. “By opening the beach, people are happier and the species does better.”
