1 . People from all walks of life tend to become more personal and hide less of themselves when using email. Researchers from Open University in Britain have found in a recent study that there are good reasons for this.

The team of researchers asked 83 pairs of students, all strangers to each other, to solve a problem. They had to discuss this question: If only five people in the world could be saved from a world disaster, who should they be? The pairs of students had to talk over the problem either face to face or by computers. Dr. Johnson said, "They told their partners four times as much about themselves when they talked over the Internet as when they talked face to face. When the computers were fitted with cameras so that students could see each other, this limited the personal side of the conversation."

Generally the information was not extremely personal. It was mainly about things such as where they went to school, or where they used to live. But some students discussed their love stories, and personal childhood experiences.

Dr. Johnson believes that emailing encourages people to focus on themselves. And when they do this, they become more open, especially if there are no cameras. "If you cannot see the other person, it becomes easier to talk about yourself. This is because you are not thinking what the other person is thinking of you. So emailing has become the modern way of talking," said Dr. Johnson. However, this style of talking is not completely new. "In the 19th century people started to use the ‘telegraph’ to communicate. Now the same kind of thing has happened and people ended up speaking more freely."

Dr. Johnson thinks that emailers need to know about these effects of emailing, especially when they start work in a company. " If you don’t know about it, you could find yourself saying more about yourself than you wanted to."

2 . Your action can speak louder than your words. It is important to know another language and how to communicate without words when you are in another country. Before saying anything, people communicate with each other by using gestures. However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world.

In the United States, nodding your head up and down means “yes”, while in some parts of Greece and Turkey, it means “no”. In the southeast of Asia, it is a polite way of saying “I heard you”.

Today in the USA, when someone puts his thumb up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Greece it is bad manners to do so. Also putting your clasped hands up above your head means “I am the winner.” It is the sign which players often make. In Russia it is the sign of friendship.

In the USA, holding your hand up with the thumb and index finger in a circle, and the other three straight means “Everything is OK.” In France, it means “You are worth nothing.”

It is also important to make eye communication. If you look down when talking to an American, he or she may feel that you are shy, or you are trying to hide something.

Besides these, you should also know there are some topics that can not be talked about, such as age, weight and marriage. You can talk about the weather, work, sports, food, where one lives and news of the day.

1. What does the sentence “Your action can speak louder than your words” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.What you do is better than what you say.
B.You try your best to be polite.
C.You are better understood by your gestures than through your words.
D.What you say is better than what you do.
2. You’d better not put the thumb up in _____.
A.Greece.B.the USA.C.England.D.China.
3. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Putting your clasped hands up above the head means friendship in Greece.
B.You can express “You are worth nothing” by putting your thumb up in France.
C.Making eye communication is not important in a talk.
D.Weather, sports, food and work are the topics that can be talked.

3 . You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It's the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed by Mozart, they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search reveals plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age is, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart's music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.

The phrase "the Mozart effect" was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that sparked real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we'll become more intelligent.

The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart's music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them produce better milk.

I'll leave the debate on the impact on milk yield (产量) to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent? More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn't make us more intelligent.

1. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.Mozart composed many musical pieces for children.
B.There is little scientific evidence to support the Mozart effect.

4 . It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad because the vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going back to school.

Most teachers start the school year by introducing themselves and talking about what you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class.

When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Pay close attention so you’ll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom.

You might have already known a lot of people in your class on the first day. But it’s a great day to make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends!

Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they’ll have mapped out a seating plan. It’s a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don’t forget.

Here are a few final tips for a fantastic (奇异的) first day: Get enough sleep. Have a healthy breakfast. Try your best. Develop good work habits, like writing down your assignments (作业) and handing in your homework on time. Take your time with schoolwork. If you don’t understand something, ask the teacher.

5 . Parents who want their kids to succeed more than anything are now being sold a high-tech solution. Class 120 is $199-a-year smartphone app that tracks teenagers and alerts parents if the kid isn’t in his or her scheduled class.

Is it a good idea for parents to track whether their young adults are in class? In short: No. This is a terrible idea.

One of the fundamental purposes of a college is learning to be an independent person. That means learning how to do what needs to be done, whether one particularly feels like doing it or not.

It’s easy to see why parents are keen on tracking their kids. A student is admitted to college by a process that focuses mainly on grades and scores. Monitoring grades and scores is easy. The parents may think that:

“Our child is succeeding. We are good parents. We are happy.” But grades and scores can’t tell everything.

They don’t take into account whether their kids have the strength of self-discipline (自律) and the skill needed to care for himself or herself.

Monitoring the development of character is much harder for parents. Character growth happens through encountering (遇到) and learning to deal with disappointments and failure. You never know which problem will be the point for growth.

However, letting kids fail can be really difficult for anxious parents. They believe that success means being perfect and never failing. The truth is that kids need to learn to fail.

College is an ideal place to practice adults’ responsibility and independence. Students need to make their own decisions about whether to get out of bed and go to work in the morning.

Maybe your child hasn’t learned this lesson by now, but he or she has to learn it sometime. An alarm clock’s job is to wake you up, but it does not provide a reason.

B.Failure may be the key part of kid’s development.
C.Everyone should manage to avoid failure at any time.

4. What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph?

6 . My parents owned a neighborhood bar called the M Ninety-Seven, named for a nearby highway, on the comer of State Fair and Hoover Avenues in Detroit. Built in the '30s, it had a long wooden bar that was on the right as you walked in. I grew up in the bar. When most kids my age were at the park playing ball or riding bikes, I was watching old men shoot pool and play shuffleboard (沙狐球).

My father spent his entire life serving drinks and bringing cheer to customers. There were the white-collars who would stop in to unwind from the day's stress. They would bend elbows with the blue-collars and day laborers on either side of them. It always surprised me that they were able to mingle(交往).I would sit at the last table by the kitchen, sipping Cokes and eating a bag of Better Made potato chips with my twin sister, watching it all.

It was the 1960s version of a reality show. There was Big Bill, the tough talking policeman who stood six and a half feet tall and weighed just shy of the beer truck he drank daily. His views on society could be hard to listen to at times. But one night, he showed that he was all talk. While Bill was on patrol (巡逻),a call came over the radio about an apartment fire. He raced scout car to the scene, beating even the fire crew. The building was ablaze. He ran up three flights of stairs through smoke and flames to rescue two frightened children. Bill carried them out in his arms like each was a carton of eggs. The man with an explosive mouth but a keg-sized heart had saved the day.

Years passed, my father died, and the bar was sold. Like secondhand smoke, the words and the scenes from that bar stayed with me.

C.Secondhand smoke is similar to the bar.
D.The writer has nothing to do with the bar.

7 . We know it’s good to learn another language, and it’s fun too. But to improve our language skills, many of us have to endure hours of school lessons or evening classes, with our heads buried in textbooks. It’s no wonder that technology appears to be providing a better and more accessible way of learning.

There is certainly a huge demand for language learning, and having a smart phone means you can have a virtual teacher with you wherever you go. Many app developers are keen to earn money on the demand, and there are numerous learning apps available.

Some educational apps offer languages not popular enough to be taught at evening classes, or at most universities. And others offer “invented” language courses in Esperanto, Elvish and Star Trek’s Klingon — lessons you might not find in a traditional classroom. Whatever you want to learn, apps allow you to go at your own pace and fit learning around other tasks. But they’re not perfect — you might not get your head round the grammar and will lack the partner support you could get in a classroom environment.

So, does technology imply the end of traditional classrooms and teachers? Guy Baron, head of modern languages at Aberystwyth University, thinks not. He thought that apps should be used alongside traditional classroom methods. And he adds: “The apps are not formal. . . they’re not designed for degrees, but they could be additional resources.”

Certainly, technology is going to help in and outside the classroom. But attending a real lesson, facing a real teacher, probably forces you to be more devoted. Motivation can be a problem when using an app. But if you have a genuine and practical reason to learn another language, you will no doubt stick with it.

1. What is the benefit of language learning apps?
A.You can learn with a partner.
B.You needn’t pay any money.
C.They provide grammar lessons.
D.They meet your personal demands.
2. What do the underlined words refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.Languages.B.Learning apps.
C.Universities.D.Teachers.
3. What is Guy Baron’s opinion about the learning apps?
A.They are of no help to learners.
B.They will replace traditional teaching.
C.They provide the most effective resources.
D.They should be combined with classroom methods.
4. Which does the author think is important in using the learning apps?
A.The instructor.B.Confidence.
C.The classroom.D.Motivation.

8 . Tech giants Apple and Google are teaming up to create a system that would let smart phone users know when they've come into contact with someone who has COVID-19.

In a statement on Friday, ACLU cyber security counsel Jennifer Granick said, The system also can't work well if people don’t trust it”. She said that the joint Apple and Google project “appears to reduce the worst privacy risks, but there is still room for improvement.” She added that the contact tracing app should be used only for public health purposes and only for the duration of this pandemic.

Public health officials say the contact tracing -finding people who have been in contact with an infected person will be a key step in lifting shelter in-place restrictions.

9 . Three weeks ago, we were living paycheck to paycheck. We survived on my husband’s low-paid job and my disability. We have kids. Also, I was experiencing a terrible tumor (肿瘤)on my neck, leaving me staying in bed in extreme pain, but the operation was to be $8,000, out of pocket, because Medicare only covers 80%.

To take me to the hospital, my husband took a day off work. At 7 am, his boss called. He was being placed on paid leaving, waiting for an investigation into a mistake he had made at work.

We both panicked. Having slowly worked our way out of poverty (贫穷) for 8 years, we were so close to being OK and it was ail falling away. As my husband was a great worker, we decided to stay positive and hope for the best. However, two days later he received the official phone call-he was fired.

Having no savings to pay bills, we cried hopelessly. We went to the welfare office only to be told that he couldn’t collect unemployment for 8 weeks, meaning he had the possibility of having $0 income for two months. It was terrifying.

With only enough food to last for about a week, we applied for food stamps and Medicaid. Then we worked together- diving into job applications. After sending out resumes (简历)to everywhere in the field, he came across some promising companies. We kept our fingers crossed. Hopefully, we could get out of trouble as early as possible.

Soon I got a phone call-my neck operation was going to be free now that we were poor again. And my husband got an email invitation for a video interview and it went great. He would be paid $3 more an hour than his last job. What a roller coaster ride!

10 . China will give the green light to Internet medical services conducted by medical institutions as part of a broader push to promote Internet Plus Healthcare, which was decided at a State Council executive meeting held by Premier Li Keqiang.

Medical institutions will be allowed to provide online diagnostic services for patients with common and chronic diseases in their followup visits to their doctors. The top levels of hospitals will be encouraged to provide online services, including consultations (会诊), reservations and test result inquiries.

As China joins the ranks of middleincome countries, the demand for health services has increased accordingly. Internet Plus Healthcare can help reduce the problem of inaccessible and expensive public health services that have long been a big concern for the general public.

One decision coming out of the meeting says the intelligent review of health insurance will be applied and that the onestop settlement will be advanced. The realtime sharing of prescription and drug retail sales will be explored as well.

“We must waste no time in pushing forward the measures once the decision is made,” Li said. “In recent years, toplevel hospitals in major cities have seen steady increases in the number of patients. Medical bills have become a heavy burden on families and highend medical resources still fall short of meeting the growing demand of the public.”

To solve the problem, a twopronged (双管齐下的) approach must be taken. One is to establish medical partnerships to strengthen cooperation between major hospitals and community clinics. The other is to bring forward Internet Plus Healthcare to promote the sharing of quality medical resources.

The government will see to it that longdistance healthcare services cover all countylevel hospitals. So more efforts will be made to ensure that highspeed broadband network will be extended to cover medical institutions in urban and rural areas. Dedicated Internet access services will be set up to meet the needs for longdistance healthcare services.
