Most foreigners who come to Japan for the first time are often surprised and sometimes complicated by the very systematic and accurate separation and disposal of garbage in the Japanese recycling system. Each city has its own rules, so you have to be careful but, in general, the rules are pretty similar.
The designated garbage bags are classified into colors (each city has different colors) and are sold in supermarkets and convenience stores.
Garbage collection dates, collection areas, and collection rules differ depending on the areas.
Using the 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) is highly encouraged.
The trash collection time varies, but it can be anything from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. Make sure to take out the trash before the scheduled time, or you might miss it and have to wait another week or so.

I'm sure you all know how important recycling is. Recycling is when you take old things and turn them into new things. It sounds like magic. But it's actually very scientific.
Material | The first thing you have to do is to collect items that can be recycled. Only certain materials can be recycled. These include things made out of paper, metal, glass and plastic. |
Daily things | Can you think of everyday items made of these material? Soda cans are good example. They are made out of metal. Magazines and newspaper are made out of paper. So are cereal boxes. Some bottles of juice are made out of glass. Bags and yogurt containers are made out of plastic. There are many things that can be recycled. |
Loop | These things are usually stamped with the recycling loop. It has 3 arrows that go in a triangular(三角形) circle. This shows that cycled(循环) continues. Items are thrown away but continue their lives as something else. |
Process | Let's go back to the process of recycling. ①The items are put in a recycling bin.②A truck carries the items to a recycling plant(工厂).③The materials are separated and squashed(被压扁成) into square cubes.④Companies buy and turn them into new products. |

4 . When your pen is broken, the batteries (电池) in your toys run out, or you have some leftover food, what will you do with these things? You will probably throw them all into one bin. But actually, all of these pieces of rubbish need to be sorted (分类) separately.
Rubbish sorting is a big problem worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it. Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a “green account (账户)” service. Account owners get points by correctly sorting their rubbish. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards or other products. The city is asking all people living there to sort their rubbish into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.
Wet waste is something you don't want but that pigs can eat. Plastics, glass, paper and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and bulbs. Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the “dry waste” bin.
Many other Chinese cities are also sorting their rubbish in this way. For example, Shenzhen has been doing this since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting guidebooks that they must study.
In fact, there are still many workers specially working for sorting rubbish by hand in China. There is still a long way to go. But it’s never too late for every Chinese to learn how to sort rubbish properly and protect the environment.
If you don't sort your rubbish, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and be buried together.
These landfills can take up much ground that could be used for planting. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries or used mobile phones, can cause pollution. Other pieces of rubbish, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.

9 . A city in Sweden has used rainbow-colored garbage recently. It has one of the most impressive recycling records in the world and met the EU's 2020 target of recycling 50% of waste many years ago.
Almost all the citizens in this city follow a strict recycling policy at home. People are expected to sort their household waste into seven separate categories, including food, textiles, cartons and metal. But what really makes the system stand out is the bright color code.
The significance for this becomes clear at the city's recycling factory. The bags are collected altogether, so when they arrive at the factory, they are mixed up. But thanks to those bright colors, scanners can select the bags and separate them easily. One of the benefits of this method of recycling is that there is less cross-pollution (交叉污染物), so more of the recycled waste can actually be used to make new things. The food waste in green bags is processed on site into mud to make biogas, which powers the city's buses. Waste that cannot be recycled is burned at a local factory to produce electricity. This creates greenhouse gases, reducing dependence on traditional fuels, such as coal.
As countries around the world try to improve their recycling degree, some may look up to this city as an example to follow — as long as they think they can persuade their citizens to get sorting work done properly at home.
