2 . Household chores (家务活) may contribute to healthy aging, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open. Researchers from Singapore found that regular physical activity, including tasks like dusting, scrubbing floors, and washing windows, can improve physical and mental health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and decrease falls, immobility, dependency, and mortality among older adults.
The study involved 249 participants aged 21 to 64 and 240 participants aged 65 to 90. Participants completed cognitive (认知) function tests and physical capability assessments. They were asked about their levels of physical activity, including light housework (such as dusting) and heavy housework (such as floor-scrubbing). The researchers found that older adults who engaged in high amounts of heavy housework had higher cognitive and attention scores compared to those who did low levels or no heavy housework at all. These participants also had lower sit-to-stand times and were at a lower risk of falling. Similarly, older adults who reported high levels of light housework had higher cognitive and memory scores compared to those who did low levels of such tasks.
Dr. Shiou-Liang Wee, co-author of the research, emphasized that health messaging on staying active should not only focus on recreational physical activities. He highlighted that housework is a purposeful activity performed by many older adults and is linked to sharper memory and better fall protection.
However, experts urge caution when interpreting the study’s findings. Professor Gill Livingston from University College London noted that people who are not well may be expected to do less housework, and the study did not establish a causal relationship between housework and health outcomes. Professor Charlie Foster from the University of Bristol highlighted that the study relied on self-reported levels of household chores, which may be inaccurate, and did not fully consider other factors that could influence the results. While the study suggests that household chore may have benefits for older adults’ health, further research is needed to better understand the relationship between housework and healthy aging.
1. How did the researchers measure the participants’ levels of physical activity?A.By analyzing the participants’ daily routines. |
B.By doing household chores with the participants. |

Have you ever heard of the position “sometimes backup catcher (替补接球手)?” I hadn’t either. Until this spring.
Since childhood, I have always liked watching baseball match. I especially loved the thrill of watching the catchers grab that game-winning grand slam (大满贯球) at the final moment. I sometimes pictured myself as the catcher, with body moving as swift as a leopard to the outfield and with eyes as sharp as an eagle’s, ready to catch the ball from the pitcher(投球手) with the glove and secure those decisive points.
This spring, my parents brought me to the Centerville Youth Baseball tryouts (选拔). When it was my turn, I ran out on to the field. My parents were surprised at how quickly I returned. “How’d you do?” Dad asked. “I don’t know,” I said. “I’m not sure I’ll make the team.” “Let’s wait and see.” Mom said.
After tryouts, Coach Bull yard announced, “Positions are posted in the clubhouse.” Parents and kids stampeded to check the results.
Dad stared at the lineup list for a long time. I couldn’t get myself to look. “So, did I make the team?” I asked him finally.
“You did,” Dad replied. “It says ‘Mike Davis: sometimes backup catcher.’” What does that mean? It didn’t sound great.
We had three practices before the first game. The first day, Is at on the bench beside my friend Emily, and Coach pointed to the outfield. “Mike Davis and Emily Hall—out there. And practice!” Emily and I headed for the outfield.
During our first practice, everything seemed to be in a mess. At the second practice, I showed some improvement, but still missed several catches. I even slipped and fell as it started to rain. I heard Emily chuckle. Coach Bull yard noticed this, and came close to me, comforting, “It’s important for a catcher to catch every ball, especially the grand-slam ball. If you do your best, you’ll see the result in the game.
At home, I asked my older brother James. “Do you think Coach will ever put me in a game as a catcher?” James wrote down and calculated some numbers. Finally, he said “The likelihood that you’ll play in a game before the end of the season is as slim as finding a needle in a haystack.” He looked at me. “In other words, it probably won’t happen.”

4 . Orbital Assembly Corporation, a new company run by John Blincow, is planning to open a space hotel by 2027. John Blincow once worked as a pilot. His space hotel, called Voyager Station, would hold 280 guests and 112 workers. It is trying to be the first commercial space hotel.
“We’re trying to make people realize that this golden age of space travel is just coming and it’s coming fast,” Blincow told CNN.
Sleeping in a space hotel will not be as comfortable as in a hotel on the earth because of the weightlessness. However, the hotel will find some ways to simulate gravity (模拟重力) to make comfortable rooms possible.
But, for many visitors, they would like to feel the weightlessness in space. As a result, the team plans to offer traditional space food such as freeze-dried ice cream in the hotel’s restaurant. It also plans some activities such as basketball games. Players can jump higher because of the weightlessness of the environment when they play basketball.
For now, the company isn’t talking about the prices of the rooms. However, they will cost a lot more compared with some space tasks. For example, Virgin Galactic plans to send passengers into space at $250, 000 per person, per trip. The team at Voyager Station, however, has already said that they plan to make a stay in the hotel something similar to buying a cruise ticket.

Last summer I have an unusual experience. It was raining hardly. Because of this, the river near my town rose but flooded some of the rice fields. The villagers, included me, went to the dam to make them strong. The PLA soldiers also came to help us. We fought hard for three days. On the end the dam was saved and our village protected from the flood. Though I became very tired after I returned home, but I was very happy. I learned many things from the villager and the soldiers. I also learned a lots from my unusual experience.

10 . I clearly remember my first airplane ride. It was in my last year of high school that my friends and I decided to go to Italy. I was both really excited and afraid.
On that day, my mom drove me and one of my friends to the airport. We got there early. After my mother left, we waited outside for the rest of the group. From where we stood we could see every plane taking off. The planes were so close to us; I could almost feel their power. At the same time, there was a fear that a plane might crash (坠毁) at any time.
I couldn’t t take it anymore so we went back inside. I decided to eat some candy and chocolate before the flight. They always help to calm me down. Minutes later, the rest of the group arrived.
Then, we all went to the gate. My legs were shaking and I thought I was going to throw up. But no, I stood there like a “man” and faced reality.
We were about to board the plane. My friends were all laughing and joking around with each other like it was no big deal, and I walked right behind them terrified to death. Once we got into the plane and found our seats, I could only do one thing: look for the devices (装置) that can save lives.
Then I heard the engines starting. My eyes popped open wide and I took a really deep breath.
I felt the plane moving and I could only think to myself God will not let me die; God will not let me die. Ten minutes later I was myself again. I wasn’t afraid anymore. I started to relax; I even read a book and talked to my friends. I remember falling asleep for a while too. And in no time we were in Italy.
